La Voce, Issue 112 Autunno / Fall 2011 Page / Pagina 4 Local Italian Radio By Domenico (Mimmo) Idone I moved to Halifax from Ottawa about 2 years ago. I have been an avid promoter of the Italian language and culture in Ottawa since my arrival in Canada as a young student a few decades ago. I have been involved in many activities within the Italian community in the National Capital region some of these included (Radio and Television). I would like to continue my "crusade" just kidding!!!! I think a community Radio Program in Italian would be something that I would like to start with here in Halifax, providing of course that there is enough interest in the community. If there is enough interest, I have already been in contact with the management of the Radio station at Dalhousie University and they will be willing to host an Italian language radio program. At this point, I would like to establish whether or not the interest is there, if it is there, I would then ask for a few volunteers to assist me in the production and in the delivery of the program. I may be contacted by telephone at (902) 237 7975 or by e mail At d.idone@live.ca Radio locale italiana By Domenico (Mimmo) Idone Mi chiamo Domenico (Mimmo) Idone risiedo ad Halifax da quasi due anni. Per ulteriori informazione potete contattarmi per telefono al seguente numero; (902) 237 7975 per corriere elettronico: d.idone@live.ca Volumes Commemorate Italian Internees By Jim Zucchero The Community Historical Recognition Program instituted by the Government of Canada is a welcome step in exposing past wrongs and trying to gain new understanding of problematic historical events. As reported in the Summer issue of Accenti, in 2009 the Canadian Government created a program inviting community organizations to submit proposals for projects that acknowledge a dark chapter in Canadian history involving the Italian community. During the Second World War, the Canadian government ordered the arrest of thousands of innocent Italian Canadians when Italy declared war on Great Britain and Canada, fearing that some might sabotage Canada s war effort from within. No one who was arrested was ever formally charged with any crime and everyone was eventually released, but the scars of the upheaval remain and the debate continues to this day over whether the government s actions were justified. Italy has surpassed France in production of wine, according to Coldiretti, the organization of Italian farmers (Confederazione Nazionale Coltivatori Diretti). What does this mean to the traveler who loves wine? Cantine, where you may taste and purchase wines, are numerous and many more labels are exporting abroad. http://www.italiannotebook.com/food wine/italian winesrule/italian wines are classified at three levels: Denominazione di orgine controllata (DOC), which means the wines come from a particular geographic location and the grape variety is specified; Denominazione di orgine controllata e garantita (DOCG), generally more expensive, wines produced under stricter controls and the origin is guaranteed; and Indicazione geografica tipica, table wines characteristic of given areas. Of the more than 500 types of wines produced in Italy (not counting your Uncle Giovanni s garage vintage), 330 are classified as DOC, fifty as DOCG, and 110 as IGT. Tuscany and Piemonte produce the most DOCG rated wines, but there s hardly a square meter of Italy that doesn t offer excellent local wines. Quantity and quality. Great news for Italian wine lovers the world over

L intero ciclo produttivo avviene a livello famigliare. Mio fratello Enrico inizia il lavoro... next issue Part II When I lived in Italy, I took many things for granted. Now that I live abroad, I feel a great interest and curiosity for the history and traditions of my family. Last fall I went back to Treviso to spend a few weeks with my parents and I decided to conduct some research on the grape harvest. During a beautiful fall evening I went with my brother Enrico to my uncles who have been producing wine since forever. The entire productive cycle is family run and based. I thought it was important to document this particular moment in the farming life because, with the introduction of the machine that sucks the grapes, this moment of hard work but also of socialization and celebration might disappear forever. I remember when I used to live with my maternal grandparents. Around the house were beautiful vines and the grape harvest represented a big moment of celebration for me. There was only a fence that divided my elementary school from my grandparents fields and towards the end of September, during recession, instead of playing with the other children; I would be there, by the fence, listening to the adults talk while they were gathering the grapes. I also remember that my snack was a huge (or so it seemed to me at that time) bunch of grapes and I was lucky enough because I could choose between red or white grapes. When my friends came to my home to play, we would often get lost between the vines and we would come back to the house with our bellies full of grapes only when my mom called us. So many beautiful memories now that my grandparents are dead and those vines are no longer there, the memories of a time that was for me carefree are the only thing left. At my uncles house the atmosphere was one of happiness. The first day I went there, the work was almost over. Only the men had stayed to beat the grapes and to gather the crates. My uncles still use wooden crates, instead of the plastic ones. My brother Enrico begins the job.... next issue Part II John Di Costanzo.
