Italian Health Economics Association (AIES) 15th Annual Conference THE FINANCING OF HEALTHCARE AND WELFARE MODELS IN THE ERA OF LONGEVITY Ca Foscari University of Venice, Department of Economics 27 28 October 2014 Over the last few decades, the simultaneous decrease in mortality and fertility rates has induced a progressive ageing of the European population. Declining birth-rates have reduced the size of younger generation cohorts, while technological progress has resulted in increased life expectancy. The percentage of people over sixty-five is higher in Europe than in any other continent and the ageing phenomenon will pose challenges for the rest of the century. The next decades will see increasing rates of older people in need of long-term care. At the same time, demographic and cultural trends in European countries are changing the traditional patterns of care. Although family still acts as a strong support network for the elderly, the demographic transition, the de-familiarization process and the dramatic increase in female labour force participation have reduced the possibilities of providing care informally. The increasing demand for care, in combination with a reduced potential for informal care, is likely to result in a need to expand formal care services. The theme of the Conference this year is focused on the financing of healthcare and welfare models in the era of longevity. Other than this issue, that is now very topical, the Conference will address specific themes such as the ageing and sustainability of the health and social service systems, epidemiological evolution, chronic diseases and new forms of care and problems related to the Long Term Care, Long Term Care systems and services, with special attention to the older population. 1
