4 ORION - ORIONE (ORI) La costellazione di Orione rappresenta la figura di un uomo mentre affronta la carica del toro, rappresentato nella vicina costellazione. Le stelle Betelgeuse e Bellatrix (la combattente o l'amazzone) raffigurano le spalle d'orione; in mezzo è posta la cintura (le stelle Mintaka, Alnilam e Alnitak). In alcune regioni d'italia le tre stelle della cintura sono identificate con i re Magi. Più in basso, si trovano Saiph e Rigel, che segnano rispettivamente il ginocchio e il piede. La nascita di quest'asterismo risale ai Sumeri, che l'associarono al mito di Gilgamesh. Per i Greci, invece, Orione era figlio di Poseidone, dio del mare, ed Euriale, figlia del re di Creta Minosse. Si narra che una notte, sull'isola di Chio, corteggiò Merope, figlia del re Enopione. Questo suscitò l'ira d'enopione, che lo fece accecare e lo allontanò dall'isola. Orione si diresse verso l'isola di Lemno dove Efesto, impietosito dalla sua cecità, lo affidò alla guida di Cedalione, che lo condusse verso est, da dove sorgeva il sole e lì riacquistò la vista.il mito di Orione è legato anche alle Pleiadi (rappresentate dall'omonimo ammasso nel Toro, M45), le sette figlie d'atlante e Pleione, delle quali s'innamorò e perseguitò. Secondo la tradizione Orione trovò la morte a causa di uno scorpione. L'eroe osò offendere Artemide (Diana), dea della caccia, affermando di essere in grado di uccidere qualsiasi animale della Terra. Quest'ultima, indignata, generò uno scorpione che lo punse a morte. Entrambi furono poi portati in cielo, ma collocati in punti opposti affinchè il velenoso animale non potesse più insidiare il grande cacciatore. Quando le stelle dello Scorpione sorgono ad est, Orione, sconfitto, tramonta ad ovest. La morte d'orione lasciò solo e disperato il suo fedele cane Sirio, che ululò per giorni e giorni fino a che Zeus non lo trasformò in una costellazione Canis Maior (Cane Maggiore).La costellazione d'orione fu oggetto di molte attenzioni anche da parte degli Egizi. Sembra, infatti, che nell'antico Egitto le tre piramidi nella piana di Giza siano state disposte in modo da rappresentare la costellazione, col fiume Nilo come Via Lattea. Inoltre un condotto d'aria della Grande Piramide è "allineato" con le stelle della cintura d'orione, mentre l'altro condotto laterale è allineato con Thuban (alpha Draconis), la stella polare di allora.
