2 Santa Maria Capua Vetere Situated in the province of Caserta, Santa Maria Capua Vetere was a small primitive Oscan village developed into a town by the Etruscans. Prosperous yet unprotected it was ravaged by Genseric in 456 and following a renewed period of splendour, destroyed by the Saracens in 840. Only a handful of tiny settlements survived around the churches of Sant Erasmo, S. Pietro in corpo and S. Maria Maggiore today s cathedral built in 432 by Symmachus, and later enlarged by Arechis III in 787, by Decio del Balzo in 1666 and reworked again in the 18 th and late 19 th centuries. Of the flourishing ancient past, when the town hosted three thermal baths, the castellum aquae (water distribution network), theatre and a number of workshops and stately dwellings, what remains today are the stunning amphitheatre and the ruins of a large cryptoporticus incorporated during the 19 th century into the Bourbon prison, now home to the Faculty of Humanities. The town grew considerably during the 19 th century following its designation as centre of the vast Terra di Lavoro in 1806 and the foundation of the Courthouse in Palazzo Melzi in 1809, on the wishes of Joseph Bonaparte. As proof of its growth and development Corso Garibaldi was built, along which stand many of the finest buildings of the time. These include the Church of the Angeli Custodi, with polychrome marble altar and Morellian style temperas; the theatre, Teatro Garibaldi built and designed in 1896 by Antonio Curri with a facade of marble reliefs featuring profiles of Bellini, Rossini, Cimarosa and Pergolesi, with an interior plafond ceiling by Gaetano Esposito in memory of the great leader, Garibaldi, who stayed in the town during the battle of Volturno (a plaque on the front of the neo-classical Palazzo Teti recalls the event); as well as a dense row of buildings in eclectic style overlooking Corso Garibaldi or raised above in adjacent streets such as Palazzo Cappabianca, embellished with fine late 19 th century decorations, in line with the Umberto I style of fin de siècle Italy. 2

5 GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Faculty of Humanities opened in 1994 with a degree course in Cultural Heritage Conservation, supplemented by a degree in Humanities and an interfaculty course in Cultural Heritage Tourism with the Faculty of Economics. In addition, the Faculty also offers a post-graduate 2 nd degree course in Archaeology and Art History and another in Classical and Modern Philology. The activities of the faculty are spread over two sites, the Aulario teaching facility in via Perla, and the Complesso di San Francesco. The Aulario is where mainly three-year course are taught and provides several spacious lecture halls, tutorial and seminar rooms for students and teaching staff, study areas for students and the Student Administration Office. The Complesso di San Francesco, former Franciscan convent, became the headquarters of the Bourbon Regiment of Rosciglione in This provides teaching and study facilities for post-graduate studies as well as rooms for the teaching staff. In addition to 1 st and 2 nd degree courses, students may continue their studies at the School of Specialisation organised in conjunction with the Suor Orsola Benincasa University of Naples, offering two-year courses in Archaeological Heritage and Historical-Artistic Heritage. Each year the faculty makes grants available to allow students to attend brief study periods at home or abroad, designed especially for students wishing to prepare research for their final thesis. The prevailing teaching method used in the Faculty is ex-cathedra lecture. However, it is supplemented by seminars, debates and conferences on both Italian and International topics. The students are evaluated through oral and written examinations. Open access language laboratory The new language laboratory based at the Aularia teaching facility is designed to support language teaching activities and to encourage learner autonomy through self-access programmes. The lab is equipped with 32 PC workstations all providing dedicated language-learning software, computerassisted translation packages and broadband Internet access. Teachers and students can make full use of the language laboratory management interface, interactive whiteboard, satellite broadcasting, audio and video editing suites and video conference facilities to create a thoughtful and stimulating multimedia learning environment. Ancient Topography Laboratory The Ancient Topography Laboratory of the Second University of Naples, including a special section on aerial photogrammetry, employs and develops methodology to recognise and record the archaeological heritage of the area, utilising existing technology and perfecting the use of the tools, programmes and techniques that archaeological heritage demands. Activities include direct research on local topography for the purpose of drawing up archaeological maps; applying aerial topography to field research and identifying appropriate preventive action; mapping, aerial photogrammetry and aerial photography; archaeological information systems, databanks and integrated methods for identifying and recording area sites; historical maps for the management and development of the area. Specific ICT tools are employed with programmes developed using available software. Aerial photogrammetry laboratory Part of the ancient topography laboratory, it is designed to identify and record topographical features of archaeological interest in order to draw up original specialised maps from aerial photographs processed by specific interpretation techniques and analytical photogrammetry. The laboratory is one of the most advanced in the field with an excellent analytical photogrammetry system (Galileo G6/Craft A2T) and an outstanding digital photogrammetry system (Nikon Stereo View 5

6 Suite) along with a range of simple tools which may also be employed in teaching (pocket stereoscopes) and PC workstations. Cluster Laboratory The Cluster 29 laboratory was set up as part of the Cluster 029 project to build up a record of archaeological and artistic cultural heritage areas of primary interest in the province of Caserta, financed by the Department of Education and Research. Library (tel: ; fax: ; is located in the old building and provides both paper and electronic journals and monographs. A computerised system stores data relative to monographs and allows for on-line research. Facilities available to students include a consultation room and a reading room, equipped with terminals. Students may borrow books (loan term: days). Opening hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Computer Centre (tel: ; fax: ; is both a necessary support structure for the teaching activities of Computer Studies in the faculty and a consulting and support service for research activity. It is equipped with 24 computers. Opening hours are from 8.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. from Monday to Friday and 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. on Wednesday. 6

7 Courses and grades The maximum final university mark is 110. Outstanding students may be awarded the degree magna cum laude. Individual courses are graded on a scale of 18-30: < 18 = fail = sufficient = satisfactory = good = very good 30 e lode = excellent Courses: Teaching activities are organised over semesters; from 29 September to 21 December (Ist semester) and from 15 March to 10 June (second semester). Examinations: January and February (first semester) June and July (second semester). International students are strongly advised to contact course lecturer or Erasmus Faculty Coordinator for further information prior to starting course. Faculty activities are particularly geared towards an international outlook with well-equipped language and computer access centres as well as the possibility to take part in the Erasmus programme in a number of European universities. 8 DEGREE COURSE IN HUMANITIES The degree course in Humanities offers a sound basis centred on the principle academic activities in the field of humanities, focused in particular towards acquiring the skills and knowledge needed to make sense of contemporary society as well as the acquisition of one or more foreign languages. The course is designed to include a wide cultural spectrum, ranging from ancient to modern, and includes various disciplinary branches of literature, linguistics, philology, geography and history, integrated with courses in archaeology, history and art. The course is designed to provide an understanding of the various systems of literary representation as well as an awareness of the historical-cultural context, so that students are equipped with the tools to either undertake further post-graduate studies, or seek employment in the fields of cultural organisation, publishing or marketing. Standard courses particularly in the last year of study are supplemented with seminars, specialised courses and further studies aimed at interpreting the texts, historical events and significant works of Western culture. 11 DEGREE COURSE IN CULTURAL HERITAGE CONSERVATION The course is designed to prepare graduates in the field of archaeological and historical-artistic cultural heritage. Employment opportunities may be found in the Department of Cultural Heritage, regional, provincial and local administration, private bodies and trusts or enterprises designed to set up medium/long-term projects to realise the potential of cultural heritage and provide professional services. Other opportunities may be provided in the fields of publishing, analysis, preventive archaeology and restoration. 15 DEGREE COURSE IN THE SCIENCE OF TOURISM FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE The degree course in the Science of Tourism for Cultural Heritage prepares graduates with a sound basis of business economics, law, geography, computer skills and statistics, placing a general grounding in humanities alongside the ability to develop the organisational, managerial and communicative skills necessary to promote and realise the potential of environmental, tourist and cultural resources. Based on innovative learning processes the course is designed to prepare future entrepreneurs in the cultural heritage tourism industry, managers in publishing, professionals in the Department of Cultural Heritage and public and private organisation. This first degree course is open to all those in possession of a high school diploma and may be modified to suit the needs of graduates in Humanities or Economics, as well as mature students with work experience. Graduates will also acquire specific skills in methodology pertaining to archaeology, historical-artistic areas and landscape with especially as regards putting cultural heritage and environmental, archaeological, architectural and artistic resources to good use. Graduates should be able to make use of at least two EU languages besides Italian and have the basic skills in utilising ICT in their field of choice. 17 2 nd degree in Classical and Modern Philology (interclass) The course is designed to provide the skills needed in the reading and interpretation of the literary text. The course is structured around ancient (LM-15) and modern (LM-15) so that by the end of the course students may: fully understand literary production and communication; acquire the linguistic and philological skills necessary for a professional method of analysis and critical interpretation of European literary texts; be fully aware of the historical context in which the critical and literary experiences have developed from ancient times to the present day; develop the skills required to research, study and distribute their knowledge within the discipline. Graduates should also have an excellent command in both written and oral production of at least one EU language besides Italian, with knowledge of specific terminology. The basic grounding common to all students is achieved by activating shared disciplinary sectors, integrated with careful selection of specific areas. The foundation course comprises all main subjects present in both L-M 14 and L-M 15, without exception. Graduates may expect to find employment in education provided they qualify at teacher training. They may also continue their research at university or research centres or hold a responsible position in cultural organisations or educational publishing. The course is structured along two lines: Class LM-14- modern philology Class LM-15- philology, literature and ancient history Aims: Modern philology (LM - 14) Graduates should have: - a thorough preparation designed to develop independent skills in mediaeval, modern and contemporary philology and the relative literature, on the basis of methodological, theoretical and critical knowledge; - a sound theoretical grounding as regards communication processes in general and the mechanisms of literary production in particular, as well as an awareness of the emerging complexities of new channels of transmission of contemporary texts; - the foundations of a theoretical knowledge of language; - specialist knowledge of the specific features of language and literature from the middle ages to the modern and contemporary age; - the skills to employ ICT in their specific field; - an excellent command in both written and oral production of at least one EU language besides Italian, with knowledge of specific terminology. 21 2 nd degree in Archaeology and History of Art (interclass) In line with national directives provided by MIUR, the 2 nd degree (interclass) in Archaeology and the History of Art is designed to blend the traditional learning programme of the archaeologist and art historian with specialised knowledge and new technical-scientific notions geared towards wide-ranging and diversified action of the protection and development of the cultural heritage and the territory as a whole. The course is structured along two lines: Archaeology LM-2 History of Art LM-89 Different curricula have been identified for each, providing specialist knowledge in various chronological areas with diverse cultural problems. The course has been specifically designed to provide the skills needed to complete the profile of the archaeologist, art historian, museologist, classifier and scientific editor with publishing houses specialised in cultural heritage. Aims LM-2 Graduates are provided with the means to understand both new technology and techniques of archaeology and traditional historical, philological and artistic disciplines. Graduates should therefore have: - advanced scientific, theoretical, methodological and operational skills regarding prehistoric, protohistoric, ancient and mediaeval archaeology and the history of art, supplemented by an understanding of history and ancient written sources; - competence in the management, conservation and restoration of the archaeological and cultural heritage; - ICT skills in their specific field, especially regarding surveys of monuments and archaeological sites, classification of finds, image processing, scientific texts; - an excellent command in both written and oral production of at least one EU language besides Italian, with knowledge of specific terminology.
