2 Landscape as Architecture Identity and conservation of Crapolla cultural site Paesaggio come architettura Identità e conservazione del sito culturale di Crapolla Starting from the urgent problems and complex challenges for the conservation of stratified landscapes, places of the synthesis between human activity and nature, the volume presents the results of a research project that involved since 2008 the cultural site of Crapolla, located on the southern slope of the Sorrento- Amalfi Peninsula and within the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area. Paradigm of landscapes where a thousand year old history has settled and where the emotional values emerge with strength, because of the presence of spring waters and of hills jutting into the sea, of the etymological allusion to ancient myths and gods, the site of Crapolla is full of a dense sense of the sacred. With it, the deep cracks of the rocks and the dizzying height of the latter assure a romantic aura to the whole. The deep gorge includes impressive buildings referable to ancient usages of the place, a port for sailors, site for the storage of food and for the supply of fresh water. The forms of architecture of the monazeni embedded into the rocks, the ruins of a Medieval abbey, the imposing mass of a sixteenth-century tower witness all the high strategic significance that the cove has assumed in the historical landscape of the Peninsula over the centuries. In the symbiosis between sublime nature and architecture, the landscape of Crapolla is, at the same time, very "fragile" and at risk of oblivion. The research here published, together with the numerous studies and experiences carried out in Italian and European contexts, face with rigor of analysis and active approach many issues related to the understanding of the intangible values i.e. anthropological, literary and social ones and of the physical and construction characteristics of the artifacts and the landscape. This is in order to highlight, through an integrated methodology of research, a coherent approach from the small to the large scale for a programmed preservation of the cultural landscape so as to prevent, through restoration and with the involvement of the local communities, the irreversible loss of precious vestiges of the past.

10 LANDSCAPE AS ARCHITECTURE Lucio Amato, Giovanni Antonucci Geophysical survey with magnetometric techniques in the Abbey of St. Peter at Crapolla The magnetic exploration The magnetic survey is a very important technique, widely applied to archaeological research thanks to the fact that it is a completely non-destructive method, with good speed of investigation and economy of use. It is based on the measurement of changes in Earth's Magnetic Field (CMT) or of its gradient. Changes or magnetic anomalies are represented by the contrast between the magnetic susceptibility (characteristic property of elements) of the various archaeological configurations and the susceptibility of the soil that contains them. The contrast of susceptibility is strong when there is a high mineral content of iron and iron-magnetic in one of the two elements or when they are taken over phenomena of thermal stress on the elements themselves. The majority of the land has a mineral content of iron oxide ranging from 1% to 10%, such as magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ), hematite (Fe 2 O 3 ) and maghemite (A-Fe 2 O 3 ) that are ferromagnetic substances. Even the cultivated soil and also the uncultivated one to a lesser extent have in their upper layer (about 30 cm from ground) a magnetic susceptibility higher than that found in the deeper layers, due to the transformation of hematite into magnetite that is magnetically strong. The mechanisms responsible for this effect stands in the fermentation process resulting from the breakdown of organic waste, which abounds in the fields and ditches drain the settlements. In addition, a common practice was to burn the dry grass, bushes and wood to clean up the soil. During combustion, the oxygen is consumed and then the top layer of the soil is reduced and subsequently the reoxidation happens at contact with the air. From this it appears clear that the cultivated soil, bricks buried in the natural soil, holes, ditches have magnetic values much higher (even several tens of orders of magnitude) than those of the natural background and are then measured as positive anomalies. The areas instead with lower concentrations of ferromagnetic minerals, such as sandstone walls, have a lower magnetic susceptibility than the land around them and are measured as negative anomalies. Finally, some materials such as artifacts in baked clay (i.e. brick, ceramic) or materials at direct contact with the heat (fireplaces, furnaces, etc.) may have been the phenomena of thermal stress. The heat acts at the atomic level on the orientation of the magnetic dipoles of each crystal of magnetite, which are arranged according to the direction of the Earth's magnetic field present in that place and at that given time. The subsequent rapid cooling "freezes" the magnetic orientation parallel to the magnetic field of the earth. The magnetic pad with the technique of the gradient, which is based on the use of a differential magnetometer or gradiometer (fluxgate), continues to be an indication of the 113

The results of gradiometer survey in the left nave (Crapolla Lab elaboration, April 2013). intensity variations of the earth's magnetic field. Compared to the method of measurement of the total field, it has the advantage of being able to operate independently from the magnetic variations or from magnetic interference of anthropogenic origin which interact with the magnetic real signal. Procedures for field exploration. The case-study of St. Peter's Abbey In order to make a magnetic survey is preferable that the soil to analyze is fairly uniform, consisting of fine materials and with a moderate magnetic susceptibility. However, there are unfavorable conditions, considered as background noise, a sandy soil with low susceptibility, conspicuous irregularities in the surface, the presence of metal debris. Another very important condition is that the operator is "magnetically clean" that is without any metal objects that could affect the sensors. Since World War II electronic instruments were introduced, including the magnetometer gradiometer which is one of the most commonly tool employed in archaeological research, based on the saturation of magnetic materials. As its accuracy is slightly less than that of the magnetometer procession, this has the advantage of providing continuous measurements over time and, more importantly, also working well with weak fields while it is relatively indifferent to outside noise. The instruments consists of two nuclei of a metal alloy, wrapped by two coils, rolled in the opposite direction, and powered by an alternating current. The two cores are magnetized in the opposite direction and in the absence of the terrestrial magnetic field the induced voltage that is measured by the two coils is equal but of opposite direction and then the resultant is nothing. If, instead, this is a unidirectional field oriented along the axis of the nuclei, the voltage induced in the two circuits will no longer have the same value and thus it will have a differential voltage that can be measured and which will be proportional to the value of the magnetic field. For carrying out the prospecting the operator must cross the area under investigation 114
12 GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY WITH MAGNETOMETRIC TECHNIQUES IN THE ABBEY OF ST. PETER AT CRAPOLLA following a regular grid with predefined steps variables between 1 and 5 meters and performing measurements at the nodes of the grid. Following the described procedure for the acquisition of data, during April 2013 Tecno in has taken part to Crapolla Lab Restoration International Workshop and on that occasion a geophysical survey has been carried out by using a technical magnetometer in the church of St. Peter's Abbey. Prospection has been made by an FM256 Fluxgate gradiometer which has given the measurement of the magnetic gradient identifying two areas characterized by magnetic "anomalies". The first area is located at 1.35 meters from the southern edge of the staircase that gives the access to the site and at 2.30 meters from the perimeter wall on the north. The second area of interest is set at 3.85 meters from the aforementioned staircase and, as in the previous case, at 2.30 meters from the perimeter wall. In both cases positive anomalies equal to 150 nt, in the first case, and 60 nt in the second case were observed. A third abnormal area was found in the proximity of the church, with positive anomalies between 40 and 100 nt. In this case, however, the values found may have been induced, although partially, by the presence of the iron gate of the church itself. Conclusion The presence of two "abnormal" areas near the northern sector of the church, corresponding to its left nave, suggests the presence of possible invisible structures and makes it necessary to deep the analysis at a broader scale in the abbey. At the same time, the geophysical results should be accompanied by in situ archaeological exploration in order to clarify the nature of the "anomalies" (i.e. column's bases, burials, foundations, etc.). 115
Siamo nel 1965 e questa descrizione anticipa la definizione di paesaggio, data nella Convenzione europea del 2000, come «area, as perceived by people, whose character is the result of the action and interaction of natural and/or human factors».
