Study methodology was carried out regarding sedimentary processes and the morpho-dynamics of microtidal wave dominated beaches in a Mediterranean environment. A database was created through the use of the monitoring network and study methodology, conducted by the Coastal and Marine Geology Group ; data from aerial photographs, satellite images, cartography, bathymetry-topography (DTM), sedimentology, wind, wave and hydrodynamics models of the relative beach systems was collected, catalogued, archived and analyzed. The data flow is gathered by Centro Transfrontaliero per lo studio della dinamica dei litorali, realized together with the P.O. Marittimo Res.Mar Rete per l'ambiente nello spazio marittimo Subproject B, sited at the Osservatorio Coste E Ambiente Naturale Sottomarino (O.C.E.A.N.S.). The results are available in scientific publications, popular publications and on a webgis ( Riassunto La rete di monitoraggio, impostata nel 2005 nell ambito del Progetto Interreg IIIA GERER Gestion intègrèe de l environnement à haute risque d èrosion, inizialmente basata su 4 spiagge campione di Corsica e Sardegna, è stata estesa, nell arco di 6 anni a 34 spiagge. È stata, inoltre, implementata la metodologia per lo studio dei processi sedimentari e morfo-dinamici di spiagge microtidali dominate da moto ondoso in ambiente mediterraneo. L implemento della rete di monitoraggio e della metodologia di lavoro ha portato alla costruzione di una banca dati, gestita dal Coastal and Marine Geology Group, che ha permesso di raccogliere, catalogare, archiviare ed analizzare dati aerofotogrammetrici, satellitari, cartografici, topografico-batimetrici (DTM), sedimentologici, di vento, di moto ondoso e idrodinamici, relativi ai sistemi di spiaggia suddetti. Il flusso dati converge presso il Centro Transfrontaliero per lo studio della dinamica dei litorali, realizzato attraverso il P.O. Marittimo Res.Mar Rete per l'ambiente nello spazio marittimo Sottoprogetto B ed ubicato presso l Osservatorio Coste E Ambiente Naturale Sottomarino (O.C.E.A.N.S.). I risultati sono resi accessibili attraverso pubblicazioni scientifiche, divulgative e mediante un webgis ( 229

2 Introduction The Coastal and Marine Geology Group of the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences at the University of Cagliari has used, tested and developed a series of methodological protocols and standards for the study and monitoring of 34 beaches (Fig.1). Figure 1 Beach network. 230

3 The network, which was initially based on 3 beaches in the north of Sardinia and 1 in the south of Corsica: Cala di Trana, La Sciumara, Venalonga (Palau) and Paragan (Bonifacio) [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [10], was set up in 2005 for the Project Interreg IIIA GERER Gestion intègrèe de l environnement à haute risque d èrosion, and in 2006 extended to the beaches of Solanas (Sinnai) and Santa Margherita of Pula [6] [7] [9] [14] through the Project Sistema di controllo Ambientale e gestione territoriale del Golfo di Cagliari M.I.U.R. In 2009, the network was extended again thanks to the Project LIFE+ Providune, to a further 8 beaches in the south of Sardinia: Piscinnì, Su Giudeu, Campana, Sa Colonia (Domus de Maria) and Porto Giunco, Simius, Is Traias and Punta Molentis (Villasimius) [12] [13]. In 2010, it was extended further to another 3 beaches: Is Arenas di Narbolia, La Cinta (San Teodoro) and Cala Budoni [1] [2] [16] [17] [18] with the contribution of some research projects and grants funded by the Regione Autonoma della Sardegna through the L.R. 7/2007 (Risposta e Adattamento dei sistemi costieri della Sardegna alle variazioni climatiche globali Ri.A.S. and Beach Environment, Management and Coastal Hazard B.E.A.C.H.). Later, the Convenzione Quadro per il funzionamento dell Osservatorio Coste E Ambiente Naturale Sottomarino (O.C.E.A.N.S.), permitted the network to expand to 17 more beaches: Lu Litarroni (Aglientu), Rena Majori (Aglientu), Badesi (Badesi, Trinità d Agultu e Vignola), La Colba (Santa Teresa di Gallura), Porto Liscia (Santa Teresa di Gallura, Palau), Porto Pollo (Palau), Le Saline (Palau, Arzachena), Cala Ciaccaro (La Maddalena), Cala Portese (La Maddalena), Cala Corsara (La Maddalena), Cala Majore (La Maddalena), Cavalieri (La Maddalena), Grande Pevero (Arzachena), Capriccioli (Arzachena), Cala Sassari (Golfo Aranci), Le Saline (Olbia) and Cala Brandinchi (San Teodoro) [15], reaching a total of 34 monitored beaches. All the data is sent to the database infrastructure of the Centro Transfrontaliero studio della dinamica dei litorali. The beaches are studied seasonally with the aim to identify: sedimentary and morpho-dynamic processes in microtidal wave-dominated beaches in a Mediterranean environment, anthropic impact, criticality evolutionary tendency, as well as providing managerial information. Methodology The studies are carried out according to the table shown in Figure 2, which illustrates the configuration of the instrumentation used, the activities carried out and the data produced/obtained [7] [8]. A historical reconstruction of the evolution of the area is made of each beach through interpretation of the available aerial photographs, in order to identify macro-indicators [15], such as: extension of the dune zone, position of the shoreline, marine phanerogams area (e.g. Posedonia, etc.), anthropic elements (buildings, roads etc.) and hydrography to evaluate the study area in the short and medium term. All the data acquired are related to a geodetic network, made on each beach, using known points (es. IGM points etc.). The topographical data is acquired using DGPS or GNSS and/or StarFire systems with a sampling frequency of points of 1 Hz. For the submerged beach an Ecosounder/DGPS system is used, interfaced with navigation software, with sampling frequency of 5 Hz. All findings relate to the UTM WGS84 Datum coordinates system. 231

The sediments collected on the morpho-sedimentological unit (dunes, emerged and submerged beach), are analyzed according to the sedimentological standard methods (grain size, composition and facies analysis). Simultaneously, measurements of the water currents are carried out and meteorological and video data is collected from the sample sites using a remote control system made up of video cameras and meteorological control units. These have permitted to 232

5 video-monitor the study area, evaluating the fluctuations of the shoreline, identifying the areas affected by overwashing, recording the deposition and dismantlement of the Posedonia banquettes. The meteorological control units have also permitted the acquisition and recording of data (direction, intensity and persistence of the wind, etc.) directly in the study area. The DTM from the bathymetric-topographical findings, the results of the sedimentological analysis and the meteo-climatic and current analyses, provide the database for the elaboration of models using Deltares DELFT3D software (the Netherlands), WAVE and FLOW modules. Wave motion and hydrodynamic models are made according to the direction and intensity of the wind plotted in the study area. In the Project Life+ Providune e Res.Mar Centro Transfrontaliero, the methodology described was developed with the construction of a database infrastructure made up of Server and SAN (Storage Area Network) for the archiving. Data (in raster and vectorial format) from aerial photographs, satellite images, cartography, bathymetry-topography (DTM), sedimentology, wind, wave and hydrodynamics models was constructed, archived and indexed, in GIS format according to EU INSPIRE and D.L.g.s. 32/2010 Italian law. The elaboration and interpretation of the data permitted not only the findings of strictly scientific results, but also the basis for applications and calculations such as: determination of evolutionary trends, seasonal setup, dune vulnerability index (DVI/GAVAM checklist [11]), erosion vulnerability, physical carrying capacity, pressure and impact of the beach systems. The methodology, as a whole, provides managerial and project information for conservation intervention. The results are available to a wide audience of potential users in scientific publications, popular publications and on a webgis ( Conclusions The methodology proposed for the study of the sedimentary and morpho-dynamic processes of the microtidal wave dominated beaches in a Mediterraean environment, adopted in 2005 for the Project Interreg IIIA GERER, was applied and developed for the Project LIFE+Providune. In 2010, thanks to the projects L.R. 7/2007 Ri.A.S. and B.E.A.C.H., and Res.Mar Subproject B Centro Transfrontaliero studio dinamica dei litorali, the monitoring network of the beaches was extended to include a total of 34 studied and monitored sites. The development of the methodology used permitted the creation of a database for the Centro Transfrontaliero per lo studio della dinamica dei litorali. It permitted the collection of data from aerial photographs, satellite images, cartography, bathymetry-topography (DTM), sedimentology, wind, wave and hydrodynamics models of the relative beach systems studied by the Coastal and Marine Geology Group of the University of Cagliari. The data collected, catalogued, analyzed and archived have been published in the usual scientific channels, and also through a webgis platform on the Osservatorio Coste E Ambiente Sottomarino ( and on the Server constructed purposefully in the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences of the University of Cagliari. 233

6 The methodology, the database system and the publications through webgis provide managerial information, intervention projects for conservation accessible to a wide audience of users.
