It is distinguished by its labellum, which is a pale ochre in the centre around a faded speculum, by its saturated red basal field and by its dark red hairs at the apex. It is a variety which, apart from the locus classicus in Urbino (PU), has also been found on Monte Morello (FI) and near Tarquinia (VT). The Commune of Urbino (Province of Pesaro and Urbino, Marche, Italy), with its 226 km 2, is the second biggest municipal area in the Marche Region and has numerous habitats which are suitable for orchids. A long series of publications, in fact, spanning two centuries, have documented a rich and variegated orchid flora (Brignoli 1811; Bodei & Brignoli 1813; Federici & Serpieri 1868; Cengia-Sambo 1929; Klaver 1991; Klaver & Rossi 2016). These publications, however, concentrated mainly on Urbino itself, the Monti della Cesana and the municipal area west of Urbino. In the middle of May 2016 the vicinity of Schieti in the north-eastern part of the municipal district of Urbino was for the first time systematically searched for orchids. As suitable habitats for orchids here are few and far between, and generally limited to a few square meters in road margins or in between arable fields, the area has been much neglected in searches for orchids so far. Surprisingly, the area revealed a certain number of interesting species of orchids. Although in bends of the Strada Provinciale (S.P. 9) in the vicinity of Villa Schieti a limited number of species can be found in sparsely distributed spots (Neotinea tridentata, Ophrys apifera, Serapias parviflora), it was mainly just east of Schieti that some interesting orchid sites were found. Here there are a few road margins with a low grassy vegetation that host various orchid species, including Ophrys bertolonii, O. sphegodes subsp. classica, O. apifera, O. holosericea subsp. appennina, Anacamptis morio, A. pyramidalis, A. coriophora subsp. fragrans, Neotinea tridentata, Orchis purpurea, O. anthropophora and Serapias vomeracea. Although Ophrys holosericea subsp. dinarica is present basically everywhere in the Marche, in the valley of the River Foglia around Schieti (altitude m a.s.l.) one can only find subsp. appennina. 3 288 Jan Marten Ivo Klaver that leads from Schieti to Pallino, groups of rather attractive variants of Ophrys apifera were found on clayey marl. The flowers of these plants had a faded ochre labellum with a dull grayish speculum which contrasted strongly with the richly coloured basal field and the dark red fringe of hairs on the shoulders and at the apex. To make sure that the faded colour of the lip was not produced by the withering of the flowers, buds were closely observed during the process of anthesis over the period of the following week. The observations left little doubt that the faded colouring was already present in freshly opened flowers and was not due to ageing (Fig. 4). At the beginning of June 2016 some pictures of plants with a faded ochre colouring of the median lobe were published on the GIROS Facebook pages. Giacomo Bruni posted a photo of a specimen that, except for its pink sepals, was near-identical to the plants found near Urbino. He also posted a photo of a specimen in which the faded ochre area on the labellum was less pronounced. Both plants were found on Monte Morello, in the municipal district of Sesto Fiorentino (Florence; Tuscany), on 4 June In the reactions to these photos, Marcello Antonj remarked that he too had found this variant form of Ophrys apifera on dry clayey soils in the vicinity of Tarquinia (Viterbo, Lazio). He added a photo which showed a plant that unmistakably shared the same characteristics of Bruni s plant with the smallish faded area on the median lobe. The fact that these plants were found in different localities in the Marche, Tuscany and Latium, each well over a hundred kilometers apart, indicates that this variant should be considered as more than a mere local freak. Therefore, plants with a faded ochre labellum, a vividly coloured basal field and a dark hairy apex are here described as a new variety of O. apifera. I use the adjective urbinensis (from Renaissance Latin Urbinum) as a geographical varietal epithet to indicate the place of provenance of the holotype. Ophrys apifera Huds. var. urbinensis Klaver, var. nov. Diagnosis: similar to Ophrys apifera Huds., but the median lobe of the labellum a faded yellowish-brown or ochre, the basal field of a saturated reddish-brown, and the apex of the labellum with dark red hairy margins; speculum same faded yellowish-brown colour as centre of labellum with white-grayish margin in brown outer rim; protuberances with dark red hairs on the outside and bridled with a bright yellow design and a dark brown rim on the inside. Description: the plants of this variety range in height from 25 to 40 cm. The habitus is similar to that of the nominate species with 4 to 6 flowers borne on a lax spike. The median lobe of the labellum is a faded yellowish-brown or ochre with a dull speculum; the basal field is saturated, tending to reddish-brown; the apex of the labellum is covered in darkly coloured red hairs. The large oval sepals are often reflected and range in colour from white to pink. The bright green petals are small and triangular. This variety flowers from the mid-may (Urbino, PU) to the beginning of June (Monte Morello, FI).

Il Comune di Urbino (PU), con i suoi 226 kmq di superficie, è per estensione territoriale il secondo comune delle Marche e comprende numerosi ambienti adatti per le orchidee. Una lunga serie di pubblicazioni nel corso dei secoli, infatti, testimonia la presenza di un ricco e variegato contingente orchidologico nel suo territorio (Brignoli 1811; Bodei & Brignoli 1813; Federici & Serpieri 1868; Cengia- Sambo 1929; Klaver 1991; Klaver & Rossi 2016). I rinvenimenti finora documentati, tuttavia, si riferiscono a ricerche concentrate su territori limitati: la città e le frazioni occidentali, i Monti della Cesana. A metà maggio 2016 è stata effettuata per la prima volta un attenta ricerca nelle vicinanze di Schieti, frazione nella parte nord-orientale del territorio comunale, zona che in passato era stata trascurata a causa del fatto che gli habitat ritenuti adatti per le orchidee sembravano piuttosto rari e generalmente limitati a piccole aree in luoghi erbosi al margine delle strade oppure tra campi coltivati. La ricerca ha avuto esito positivo, sorprendentemente la zona ha rivelato un discreto numero di interessanti specie di orchidee. Anche se ai lati della tortuosa S.P. 9 nelle vicinanze di Schieti crescono occasionalmente esemplari

5 290 Jan Marten Ivo Klaver di Neotinea tridentata, Ophrys apifera e Serapias parviflora, è nella zona subito a est della frazione che si trova un numero maggiore di habitat interessanti. Qui, ai margini delle strade di campagna e tra i campi coltivati, si trovano luoghi erbosi poco estesi, ma piuttosto ricchi di specie: Ophrys bertolonii, O. sphegodes subsp. classica, O. apifera, O. holosericea subsp. appennina, Anacamptis morio, A. pyramidalis, A. coriophora subsp. fragrans, Neotinea tridentata, Orchis purpurea, O. anthropophora e Serapias vomeracea. La presenza di O. holosericea qui è particolarmente interessante, infatti, mentre la subsp. dinarica si trova ovunque nelle Marche, nei dintorni di Schieti nella valle del Foglia (altitudine m s.l.m.) è stata trovata soltanto la subsp. appennina. Appena oltre la valle di Schieti, su un terreno marnoso-argilloso lungo le curve della strada che porta da Schieti a Pallino, il 13 maggio 2016 ho osservato varianti molto attraenti di Ophrys apifera. I fiori di queste piante avevano un labello sbiadito color ocra e una macula grigiastra che contrastava fortemente con il rosso acceso del campo basale e il rosso scuro del margine peloso delle spalle e della parte apicale. Per assicurarmi che il labello sbiadito non fosse dovuto al normale processo di degrado fiorale a seguito della fecondazione, nella settimana successiva ho seguito l antesi dei fiori in boccio, e ho potuto osservare che il colore sbiadito non era affatto dovuto allo sfiorire della pianta, ma che era già presente nei fiori appena aperti (Fig. 4). Nei primi giorni di giugno 2016 vennero postate sulla pagina Facebook del GIROS alcune immagini di esemplari di O. apifera con un labello sbiadito simile a questi. Giacomo Bruni ha postato una foto di un fiore che, a eccezione dei sepali rosa, era identico a quelli trovati nelle vicinanze di Urbino, aggiungendo anche la foto di un altro con labello meno intensamente sbiadito. Entrambe le piante erano state trovate il 4 giugno 2016 da Bruni sul Monte Morello nel Comune di Sesto Fiorentino (Firenze). Come risposta al post di Bruni, Marcello Antonj scriveva che anche lui aveva trovato questa variante di O. apifera su terreni argillosi nei dintorni di Tarquinia (Viterbo): il fiore della relativa foto appare molto simile alla pianta di Bruni, quella con il lobo centrale del labello meno sbiadito. Il fatto che questa variante sia stata rinvenuta in località diverse tra Marche, Toscana e alto Lazio, indica che non si tratta di una anomalia locale, e pertanto queste piante che hanno i fiori con labello sbiadito di color ocra, campo basale rosso acceso, margine peloso sulle spalle e parte apicale rosso scura, vengono qui descritte come una nuova varietà di O. apifera. Come epiteto si usa l aggettivo urbinensis per indicare la provenienza geografica dell olotipo. Ophrys apifera Huds. var. urbinensis Klaver, var. nov. Diagnosi: simile a Ophrys apifera Huds., ma con il labello di colore ocra sbiadito, campo basale di color rosso acceso, e frangia rosso scura di peli sulle spalle e all apice; macula sbiadita con margine biancastro o grigio; gibbosità con peli di color rosso scuro all esterno e con disegno di color giallo chiaro e bordo marrone all interno. Descrizione: piante di altezza tra 25 e 40 cm. Habitus simile a quello della specie nominale, con 4-6 fiori in spiga lassa. Lobo mediano del labello di color giallo-marrone o ocra sbiadito, con macula appena accennata; campo basale rosso-marrone; apice del labello coperto di peli rosso scuri. Sepali grandi e riflessi, bianchi o rosati. Petali triangolari, piccoli e verdi. Trovata in fiore a metà maggio nell Urbinate, a inizio giugno a Monte Morello (Firenze).
