Winter Fair 2014 WOW! This year s edition has marked another important milestone in our school history in terms of student & parents participation! Impressive organization, team work and lots and lots of enthusiasm has made our Winter Fair 2014 an incredible success! The Winter Fair brings our whole community together and with the support of every single one of you (students, parents, teachers, staff), our special atmosphere is recreated once more and shared with our whole school community! We hope you and your children enjoyed the day! A very special thanks goes to Louise Salters & our PTA ladies, for the incredible effort in organizing a fabulous event in a very short time! Thank you to all the volunteers, moms & dads who have supported the event in different ways (cooking, preparing, decorating, coordinating). The International buffet was an amazing trip around the world with delicious foods representing our international community thank you super cooks, we really should start working on an IS Modena recipe book! A special thank you also goes to our determined and hard working ISM student council for the support in meeting & greeting, setting up & organizing and supervising the Middle Years lounge! WELL DONE!!! Thank you Luigi and Mr. Kay for the long & tiring job of preparing the gym for hosting the festive songs, a traditional and important finale to our Winter Fair. Thank you to Claudia Schmitz and her team of volunteer moms for prepping in only 2 weeks time, 5 different student groups + 1 adult group, singing in 5 different languages. CARING is one of the IB learner profile attributes and caring makes us all feel happy and good. Feeling part of a caring and giving community makes us feel special. Special thanks have arrived to our school community from CUAMM Medici per l Africa for having hosted them during our Winter Fair. Through the participation in our Winter Fair and caring community they have raised 339,00 which will be destined to support the renovation of the Primary Boarding School in the village of Sosian near Rumuruti in Kenya which today hosts and guarantees education to 100 boarding students and 250 day students. www.africanelcuore.it Usborne Bookfair - thanks to the purchases of our school community, our school has gained new books to a total of 600,00. Winter Spettacolo Winter Spettacolo YE-HA! taking place on Friday, December 12 th @ 19:00 at the Polisportiva Formiginese in Formigine. Information on how to purchase tickets and DVD of the show has been circulated last week and is available as attachment to the newsletter mail. Winter Spettacolo Young Edition - Kindergarten, Transition & Grade 1 will take place on Wednesday, December 17 th @ 13:00 in the Gym. Friday, December 5 th - after school activities & clubs end on Friday, December 5 th with the exception of: Terza Media Math IT, Chess & Good Afternoon club. The Props Making Club will be running on Wednesday, December 10 th to allow the team of students & teachers to complete the last finishing touches for the Winter Spettacolo. This time of year is particularly stressful and intense for all our ISM Staff. We are on the hunt for a variety of odds and ends and are appealing for anything you might have lying around that would help us out. We are currently looking for the following: Cowboy hats A tutu that would fit an adult Someone who is willing to help create 6 pairs of underpants (material already available) Old leather suitcase or carpenter-style bag If you have any of the above that you would be able to donate, we would greatly appreciate it. IMPORTANT REMINDERS Attendance from the Student/parent Handbook Learning at the International School of Modena is very interactive, requiring the participation and interaction of the students with each other and with the teachers. This is adversely affected when a child is absent not only for that child in particular but for the dynamics of the whole class. Of course some absences, such as illness, are unavoidable, but others lie within the family s priorities. Please see Extended Absences below. The Absence forms, in the Home/School Diary, must be completed for a single day of absence or to cover a period of absence. The Absence forms must be filled out and one part returned to the school office. Please remember that if your child has been absent for 6 days or more in a row, a doctor s note stating that the child is well enough to attend school must be produced before the child is allowed to return to school. Weekends add to the total number of days only if they are in the middle of the sickness time (i.e. a child is sick from Thursday until following Wednesday) Absences/Tardies Punctuality is important both as a matter of courtesy and to prevent disruption of classes caused by the arrival of latecomers. If a student is late she/he misses the important beginning of the school day. Chronic tardiness prohibits learning for all students. Please show respect for your child s learning as well as the other students and be on time. Please refer to the Whole School Behaviour Expectations Document. If a child is absent or will be late, parents are asked to telephone (or mail) the school before 8:30 and fill out the Late/Early dismissal Absence forms from the Home/School Diary. One part is to be returned to the office. Extended Absences If a student will be away from school for an extended period of time (3 days or more) the parent should notify the School Manager in writing, by using the Absence forms, stating the dates and reason for the absence. Please ensure that at least one week s notice is given before the extended absence takes place. Students will be responsible for completing the following during extended absences: A written daily journal/diary describing their experiences while out of school; Collecting brochures, maps, ticket stubs, etc. to share upon returning to school; Any work assigned by the teacher (not all teachers will assign work during absences); Parents are asked to avoid scheduling family holidays during term time, as it is disruptive to the student s progress and to the rest of the class. Students who miss more than 20 days of school for reasons other than illness will be retained and will repeat their current grade in the 2014-2015 school year. Students who miss more than 35 days of school for any reason, illness included, will be retained and will repeat their current grade in the 2014-2015 school year.

HEALTH & SAFETY Security The safety and security of your children is extremely important to us. All parents and visitors must sign in at the office when entering the school building and sign out when leaving. We ask all parents to use the outer parking lot and enter through the small gate. Please help us in ensuring that the small gate is closed at all times. The school has an evacuation procedure which will be used in the case of either fire or other security alert. Regular fire and earthquake drills take place throughout the school year. OUR SCHOOL IMPLEMENTS A STRICT NUT-FREE POLICY No food containing any type of nuts or nut traces is allowed in the school building at any time. Please note: Nutella does contain nuts. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping everyone in our school healthy and safe. Snacks/Drinks: Please note that students may bring healthy snacks or fruit to enjoy during their breaks. Sweets, crisps and high sugar drinks (Coke, Sprite, Ice-Tea) are not allowed. No gum is permitted anywhere in the building or on the school grounds. Early Years students bring only fruit. Winter Fair 2014 WOW! L edizione di quest anno ha segnato un altra pietra miliare nella storia della ns. Scuola in termini di partecipazione di studenti & genitori! Un organizzazione importante, lavoro di squadra e molto molto entusiasmo hanno contribuito a rendere la ns. Winter Fair 2014 un successo straordinario! La Fiera d Inverno riunisce tutta la nostra comunità e grazie a ciascuno di voi (studenti, genitori, insegnanti e staff) è stata ricreata ancora una volta un atmosfera unica e speciale e condivisa con tutta la ns. comunità. Ci auguriamo che vi siate divertiti tutti. Un ringraziamento speciale va a Louise Salters e le ns. signore del PTA per l incredibile impegno dedicato all organizzazione di questo favoloso evento in così poco tempo! Grazie a tutti i volontari, mamme & papà, che hanno dato una mano in modi diversi (cucinando, curando i preparativi, allestendo gli addobbi e coordinando il tutto). Il buffet internazionale è stato un fantastico viaggio nel mondo cono prelibatezze rappresentanti tutta la ns. comunità internazionale grazie e complimenti alle super chef dovremmo proprio pensare di creare il ricettario IS Modena! Uno speciale ringraziamento va inoltre al nostro determinato e operativo consiglio studentesco ISM per il grande lavoro svolto nel servizio di benvenuto, allestimento e organizzazione e gestione del Middle Years lounge. OTTIMO LAVORO! Un ringraziamento speciale a Luigi e Mr. Kay per il lavoro e pazienza nella preparazione della palestra per ospitare la parte finale della Winter Fair, come da tradizione, dedicata ai canti natalizi. Grazie a Claudia Schmitz e al suo team di mamme volontarie che in solo 2 settimane hanno preparato 5 gruppi di studenti + 1 gruppo di adulti e che hanno cantato in 5 lingue diverse. Essere altruisti (CARING) è uno degli attributi del Profilo dello Studente IB ed è qualcosa che ci fa sentire tutti bene e a posto con noi stessi. Essere parte di una comunità premurosa e generosa ci fa sentire tutti speciali. Sono arrivati dei ringraziamenti speciali a tutta la ns. comunità da parte di CUAMM Medici per l Africa per averli ospitati alla Winter Fair. Le informazioni per l acquisto dei biglietti e copia del DVD sono state inviate la scorsa settimana e la ritrovate anche allegate alla mail della newsletter. Spettacolo d Inverno edizione Young (Kindergarten, Transition & Grade 1) si terrà mercoledì 17 dicembre nella palestra alle ore 13:00. Venerdì 5 dicembre termine attività extra scolastiche & clubs con l eccezione di Matematica Italiana per la Terza Media, Club di Scacchi e Good Afternoon. Il Props making Club del mercoledì pomeriggio si svolgerà anche mercoledì 10 dicembre per permettere agli studenti e staff coinvolti di ultimare i preprativi per il Winter Spettacolo. PROMEMORIA IMPORTANTE Frequenza dal manuale studente/genitore L apprendimento all International School of Modena è molto interattivo e richiede la partecipazione e l interazione degli studenti con gli altri e con gli insegnanti. L assenza del bambino ha un effetto negativo non solo per il bambino in sé ma anche per le dinamiche dell intera classe. Sicuramente alcune assenza, come la malattia, sono inevitabili ma altre dipendono dalle priorità famigliari. Vi preghiamo di fare riferimento all Assenze Prolungate di seguito. Il modulo delle Assenze, nel Diario scolastico, deve essere compilato anche per un solo giorno di assenza o per coprire un periodo di assenza. Il modulo delle Assenze deve essere compilato e una parte deve essere consegnata in segreteria. Vi ricordiamo che se vostro figlio è assente per più di 6 giorni di fila è necessario fornire un certificato medico che dichiari la buona salute fisica dello studente prima che gli sia permesso di rientrare a scuola. I giorni festivi contribuiscono al calcolo dei giorni malattia solo se cadono nel corso della malattia (per esempio se un bambino è malato da giovedì fino al mercoledì successivo). Assenze/Ritardi La puntualità è importante sia per una questione di educazione sia per prevenire l interruzione delle lezioni causate dall arrivo dei ritardatari. Se uno studente è in ritardo perde l importante inizio della giornata. Il ritardo cronico impedisce agli studenti di apprendere. Vi chiediamo di rispettare l apprendimento di vostro figlio e degli altri studenti e di essere puntuali. Vi invitiamo a fare riferimento al documento sulle Aspettative di Comportamento di tutta la scuola. Se un bambino è assente o è in ritardo, i genitori devono informare telefonicamente (o via email) la segreteria prima delle 8:30 e compilare il modulo di ingresso posticipato/anticipato che si trova nel libretto delle assenze nel Diario Scolastico. Una parte deve essere consegnata alla segreteria. Assenze Prolungate Se uno studente sarà assente da scuola per un periodo esteso (oltre i 3 giorni) il genitore deve informare per iscritto lo School Manager, usando il modulo delle Assenze, segnalando data e ragione dell assenza. Assicuratevi che sia dato un preavviso di almeno una settimana prima dell assenza prolungata. Agli studenti sarà richiesto di completare le seguenti attività nel corso dell assenza prolungata: Scrivere un diario quotidiano descrivendo le esperienze fatte fuori da scuola; Raccogliere brochures, mappe, biglietti, ecc. da condividere al rientro a scuola; Qualsiasi compito assegnato dall insegnante (non tutti gli insegnanti assegneranno compiti durante le assenze); Ai genitori è richiesto di evitare di pianificare vacanze famigliari al di fuori delle vacanze scolastiche poiché interferisce sul progresso dello studente e della classe. Gli studenti che perdono più di 20 giorni di scuola per ragioni diverse dalla malattia dovranno ripetere l anno frequentato nel 2014-2015. Gli studenti che perdono più di 35 giorni di scuola per qualsiasi ragione, inclusa la malattia, dovranno ripetere l anno frequentato nel 2014-2015.

Salute & Sicurezza Sicurezza La sicurezza e l incolumità dei nostri bambini è estremamente importante. Tutti i genitori e i visitatori devono registrarsi in segreteria quando entrano a scuola e devono segnare l uscita quando escono. Chiediamo a tutti i genitori di usare il parcheggio esterno e di entrare dal cancellino. Vi chiediamo di assicurarvi che il cancellino sia sempre chiuso. La scuola ha una propria procedura di evacuazione in caso di incendio o di altro allarme di sicurezza. Prove di evacuazione anti-incendio o anti-sismiche vengono condotte regolarmente nel corso dell anno scolastico. NELLA NOSTRA SCUOLA E IN VIGORE UN RIGOROSO DIVIETO DI CONSUMO DI FRUTTA A GUSCIO Nessun alimento contenente frutta a guscio o tracce di frutta a guscio è ammesso nell edificio scolastico in qualsiasi momento. NB: la Nutella contiene frutta a guscio. Ringraziamo per la cooperazione nel mantenere un ambiente sano e sicuro per tutti. Merende/bevande: si prega di notare che gli studenti possono portare merende sane o frutta da gustare durante le ricreazioni. Mavi s personal project presentation & PTA message Dear ISM families, In order to be promoted from Grade 11 to Grade 12, the students have been working on their Personal Projects. They had the opportunity to choose a subject and focus on it in order to make a final product to communicate what they have learnt. One of our students, Maria Vittoria Morandi has been working on the topic Gender Inequality and she would like to invite you to attend her presentation on Friday 5 th December 2014 from 14:15 to 15:00 in the Auditorium. The aim of the presentation is to raise everyone s awareness in order to end this inequality, which affects thousands of women and men every day. Cari genitori, Per essere promossi da Grade 11 a Grade 12, gli studenti stanno lavorando sul Personal Project. Hanno avuto l opportunità di scegliere un argomento e fare degli studi su di esso per creare infine un prodotto che comunichi quello che hanno imparato. Una ns. studentessa, Maria Vittoria Morandi, ha scelto di lavorare su L inegualità Tra i Sessi e vorrebbe invitarvi ad assistere alla sua presentazione che si terrà Venerdì 5 Dicembre 2014, alle 14:15 fino alle 15:00 nell Auditorium. Lo scopo della presentazione è di sensibilizzare le persone per mettere fine a questa inegualità che ogni giorno colpisce migliaia di uomini e donne. Winter Fair 2014 - THANK YOU The PTA sends a massive THANK YOU to all of you who were involved in helping plan, organise and set up beforehand and on the day for attending, bringing delicious food to share, donating jars, helping out on the international buffet stalls or with other fair activities, lending a hand clearing up as well as singing so beautifully at Saturday's 2014 PTA Winter Fair. It was a fantastic example of how great it is when the ISM community comes together for a common purpose! 100 of our ISM families attended and together raised 1400.00 which will be used to fund benefits and activities for ISM students over the coming months. We cannot thank you all enough! We hope you have a great holiday season and look forward to your continued support and participation in 2015! SCHOOL UNIFORM Students are expected to wear the school uniform which consists of a blue polo shirt and a blue sweatshirt. Students can wear the short sleeved polo shirt and winter jacket on top for outdoor activities. Please make sure your children refrain from wearing personal sweatshirts, cardigans or jumpers. Please refer to the Student-Parent Handbook for further information. DIVISA DELLA SCUOLA Gli studenti devono indossare la divisa della scuola composta da una polo a manica lunga e/o corta e felpa blue. Gli studenti possono indossare la polo a maniche corte sotto al giaccone per le attività esterne. Vi preghiamo di assicurarvi che i vs. figli non vengano a scuola con felpe, cardigan e/o maglioni personali. Vi invitiamo a consultare lo Student-Parent Handbook per ulteriori informazioni. PARKING AREA All parents must use the public parking area outside the school gate at all times. Please remember to lock your cars and please make sure you don t leave any personal belongings in the car. Internal parking area is reserved for staff only and the bus service. PARCHEGGIO ESTERNO Tutti i genitori devono utilizzare sempre il parcheggio all esterno del cancello. Ricordatevi di chiudere le portiere dell auto e non lasciate borse e borsette in macchina. Il parcheggio interno è riservato allo staff e ai bus scolastici.
