Benvenuto alla seconda edizione del Forum Internazionale sull Alimentazione e la Nutrizione, due giornate di dibattito in cui esperti internazionali del mondo delle scienze, dell economia e della cultura si confrontano sulle priorità e sul futuro in materia di alimentazione e nutrizione. Welcome to the 2 nd International Forum on Food & Nutrition, a two-day debate where international experts in science, economics and culture discuss on priorities and future concerning food and nutrition.
Solo la pluralità di discipline, di immagini, di esperienze può realmente trasmettere quello che il mondo dell alimentazione e della nutrizione rappresenta, per interpretare il mondo in cui viviamo, ma anche e soprattutto per costruire il nostro futuro. Gentili Signore e Signori, l evento a cui state per partecipare nasce per interrogarci e provare a dare alcune risposte sui grandi temi relativi all alimentazione e alla nutrizione, grazie all incontro tra le migliori conoscenze a livello mondiale. Da qui l esigenza sentita di organizzare un incontro di due giorni per discutere e affrontare questi grandi temi rendendo evidente non solo la loro complessità, ma anche la necessità del mondo dell alimentazione e della nutrizione di avere un approccio multidisciplinare agli stessi, così come abbiamo fatto in questi due anni con i lavori del Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition, pubblicando ricerche e mettendo i risultati a disposizione di tutti. Temi quali le biotecnologie in campo alimentare, il valore culturale dell alimentazione nei Paesi del Mediterraneo, il rapporto tra alimentazione e sostenibilità, tra molti altri, saranno affrontati e Ladies and Gentlemen, The event in which you are about to take part was conceived to provide an opportunity to ask some questions and seek out some answers through interchange among the foremost global experts on the great issues of food and nutrition. Hence the need was felt to organize a two-day debate to address and discuss these important topics, highlighting non only their complexity but also the need for a multidisciplinary approach towards food and nutrition. This has been the approach taken in the work of the Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition over these past two years, including the publication of research studies so that their results will be available to everyone. Il Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition: più discipline e proposte concrete More disciplines and concrete proposals Negli anni che stiamo attraversando, la struttura della filiera alimentare, le logiche di produzione e approvvigionamento si stanno facendo sempre più complicate. Aumentano gli attori coinvolti e le variabili del sistema si moltiplicano. Aumentano i dubbi e le incertezze sullo scenario futuro, soprattutto se si tiene conto della crescita della popolazione mondiale. Il Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition crede nell importanza di approfondire i problemi secondo un approccio costruito su schemi di ragionamento multidisciplinari, nella speranza che il lavoro prodotto possa risultare utile per il futuro della nostra società. L agricoltura è sempre più in difficoltà a causa dei mutamenti climatici, che influiscono non solo sui volumi prodotti ma anche sul prezzo delle materie prime. Gli squilibri alimentari determinano effetti tra di loro opposti: da un lato cresce il numero delle persone che soffrono la fame, dall altro lato, aumentano le persone in sovrappeso. Affrontare concretamente questa realtà è stato il motore della nascita del Barilla Center for Food & In this current period of history, the structure of the food industry and its production and supply paradigms are becoming increasingly complicated. There is a growing number of players involved and the number of variables in the system is multiplying. Doubts and uncertainties about the future scenario are increasing, especially if we consider the world population growth. Agriculture is increasingly under stress due to climate change, which affects not only the volumes but also the prices of foodstuffs, and dietary imbalances cause starkly contrasting problems: while the world s underfed and malnourished are increasing, there is also a growing number of people who are overweight or obese. A desire to take concrete steps regarding this situation has been the driving force behind the establishment of the Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition, an interdisciplinary project created to offer a serious contribution to the ongoing debate through original thinking and concrete proposals. Thanks to a methodology that accurately encompasses 4

He contributes to newspapers such as Avvenire, Vita, Radio Vaticana and Il Giornale Radio Rai on different topics concerning Africa and the south of the world. Since February 2007, he has been teaching journalism at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He is author of several books about missionary topics and he is the Editor of the magazines of the Pontificie Opere Missionarie PP.OO.MM- Missio Italia, Popoli e Missione and Il Ponte d Oro. Previously, he headed the New People Media Centre of Nairobi and in 1997 he founded the Missionary Service News Agency, now Missionary International Service News Agency (MISNA). He won 14 journalistic and 4 literary prizes. In July 2003, he was appointed Grande Ufficiale of the Italian Republic by President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi because of his journalistic merits in the south of the world. 22
