Eleven contestants shamelessly stuffed their creamy- filling faces with large size cannoli. Within a six-minute period, the competitive eaters scarfed down 125 cannoli, resulting in a twoway tie each one having shoved 12 cannoli down their throats. The oneminute sudden death, eat-off tie breaker commenced. The winner was determined. Salvatore Aiello won the Festa Italiana 2013 World Cannoli-Eating Championship and received a plaque. Runner up was Tim The Shark Cope. All contestants received a Keep Calm Cannoli On souvenir t-shirt. Special thanks to Fern Hill Golf Judges Judging Meatballs Contest The Quest For The Ultimate Meatball On Saturday, July 20 th, once again Macomb County Judges put their taste buds to the test to determine which contestant cooked and brought to the Italian festival the ultimate meatballs. Judging was based on the overall taste of the juicy ground meats; fresh ingredients; exquisite seasonings or sauce. Michael Giacchina decided to put his meatballs in the court to challenge and attempt to unseat his wife, Kristina, who is a two-time Italian festival meatball winner (2007 & Club for sponsoring this event; sincere appreciation to Ron DiBartolomeo, who oversaw the scarfing down, and Il Fornaio Bakery for donating all of the cannoli. 2008). It was a difficult sampling/eating task for the judges, but someone had to do it. As it turned out, Michael was not able to claim victory over his wife because it was a tie. Special thank you to Bagnasco & Calcaterra Funeral Homes for sponsoring the event; thank you to Angie D Aleo Morelli, Chairperson, and sincere and grateful appreciation to our returning judges for their support each year Hon. Judge Peter Maceroni, Hon. Judge Michael Maceroni, Hon. Judge Sebastian Lucido, and Vince Viviano, Community Relations Coordinator, Macomb County Road Department.

PAGE 8 Italian American Cultural Society AUGUST 2013 Abruzzesi Trounced by Veneziani in First Bocce Tournament By Sandra Tornberg On June 30, the IACS bocce courts hosted the first bocce tournament between the Federazione Abruzzese del Michigan and the Venetian Club of Mutual Aid. Fr. Enzo Addari started things off by giving a blessing over the teams and the courts. The men and women of the Venetian Club soundly beat the FADM teams. I can personally attest to the fact that the Venetian women were formidable opponents my team was shut out twelve to zero (This was after I asked Fr. Addari to bless my bocce throwing hand yet) It was an enjoyable afternoon of bocce in the sunshine, followed by a meal of pizza, salad, and sausage. AUGUST 2013 Italian American Cultural Society PAGE 9 Thank You Randazzo Fresh Market By Sandra Tornberg If you re a faithful reader of The Italian American, you know that each month our second page features shoppers at Randazzo Fresh Market. Mr. Sonny Randazzo told me that they like to feature their customers in the ads because they are most important. Randazzo Fresh Market has been advertising in The Italian American for the past three years. In addition, they have been supporters of the Festa Italiana for ten years and have been a major sponsor of our Ladies Only Night for several years. Furthermore, Randazzo Fresh Market is always ready to donate flowers, plants, fruit, and whatever else the IACS Father and son tomatoes happens to need to make an event special. Randazzo Fresh Market has been serving the community for over forty years. Mr. Nino Randazzo opened the first store, located at 13441 13 Mile Road in Warren, in 1972, and the second, at 49880 Hayes in Macomb, in 1990. Sonny and his sister Maria opened the third location at 36800 Garfield in Clinton Township five years ago, carrying on the family tradition. Beautiful basil Nino's beautiful lemon plant Sonny is Operations M a n a g e r and Maria is Office M a n a g e r for all three locations, but dad Nino still comes in almost every day. He has a huge garden behind the Macomb store, with tomatoes, Sicilian eggplant, figs, lemons, oranges, prickly pear (fico d India), and enough basil to supply the stores needs for the months of July and August. I n t r e p i d photographer Elio Ripari and I were given a tour of this magnificent garden. The first plant we encountered was an enormous fig tree. My first thought was of the fig trees my father grew in our backyard and how with great difficulty he buried them each fall so they would survive the winter. Then I realized that this fig is growing inside of a beautiful hothouse that we had stepped into, in which there were also a giant Sicilian cactus, a pergola with beautiful grapes, orchids, and gardenias. Nino picked a gardenia for me, and I wore it in my buttonhole the rest of the day, delighted by its beautiful fragrance. Sonny explained that the three pillars of the Randazzo Amazing grapes p h i l o s o p h y are customer service, quality, and great prices, which equate to great value. The flavor and high quality of their baked goods and prepared foods, all made from scratch with no shortcuts, set Randazzo Fresh Market apart from their c o m p e t i t i o n. With the family name at stake, they will not sacrifice quality. Nino and Sonny Randazzo Sonny and his wife have four children, and Maria has three children. They encourage education, but will welcome it if their children want to follow them into the family business someday, just as they followed Nino. When I thanked Sonny on behalf of the IACS for the generosity and support that we receive from Randazzo Fresh Market, he explained Sicilian prickly pear Fabulous fig that they are proud to carry on the Italian tradition and help bring it to people from all walks of life. Sonny has been nominated 2013 Man of the Year by the Lodge Figli della Sicilia. He will be honored at their 77 th annual banquet on September 28, 2013 at Penna s. Congratulations to Sonny on this well deserved recognition. Thanks again to Randazzo Fresh Market for being a great friend to the Italian American Cultural Society and Banquet Center

AUGUST 2013 Italian American Cultural Society PAGE 11 By Sandra Tornberg The IACS General Membership Meeting began with an update by President Giovanni LoIacono on the lobby renovations, which he said are 95% complete. His words were illustrated by a slideshow that showed the work as it progressed. John thanked everyone who helped with the project, in particular Domenico Ruggirello, who worked very hard. John also thanked Mike Biondo of Décor Statuette, Inc. for his generous donation of vases for the lobby. John was modest and did not elaborate on how many hours he worked to transform the lobby. He made the beautiful metal table that is located on the wall between the restrooms. If you haven t seen it, be sure to take a close look at his craftsmanship next time you come into the building. IACS General Membership Meeting Held on June 27 Italian culture. John thanked Messina Trucking for donating their services to pick up limestone dust for the bocce courts and deliver it to the IACS. Next he recognized Mario Moceri, who donated equipment, volunteers and his own labor to spread the limestone onto the courts. John then thanked Tony Recchia, Domenic Nardone, Floyd Zanchetta, Ralph Baldassarro, and Carlo DiVirgilio who finished the job. Special recognition was given to Elio Ripari and Antonio DiGiorgio, whom John referred to as the Cheech and Chong of bocce, (or better Francho Franchi and Ciccio Ingrassia) for their dedication to the bocce courts. Next on the agenda was the presentation of scholarships consisting of two semesters of Italian education at the Center beginning in September through April. This year s winners are Ylenia Bonni, Jacob Stout, Mario Russo, and Gabriella Griffith. PAGE 12 Italian American Cultural Society AUGUST 2013 Each year the Italian American Cultural Society offers a wonderful opportunity to high school students to obtain two semesters of Italian language at the Italian American Cultural Center. Applicants are required to submit an essay: Why I Would Like To Study Italian ; a cover letter including biographical sketch; reason for wanting the award, and a photo in color or black & white. On June 27, at the IACS General Membership Meeting, four scholarships were awarded for two semesters of Italian education at the Center beginning in September through April. In addition the winners of the scholarships will receive a letter of recommendation for college. This year s scholarship recipients are Ylenia Bonni, Jacob Stout, Mario Russo, and Gabriella Griffith. Ylenia Bonni is 16 years old and is a sophomore at Dakota High School. She is very active in a number of extra-curricular programs at school and in the community. She is a member of the Women s Varsity Choir at school and has been in many competitions as an ensemble and soloist performer, receiving excellent and superior ratings in competitions at the state level. Ylenia is the queen of the Club Madonna del Ponte of Partinico and also part of the court of senior queens for the Columbus Day Celebration Committee. She is a member of the church choir at Holy Family Church and participates every Sunday in the Italian mass. All the IACS Italian Education Scholarship Winners for 2013 songs are in Italian, and Padre Pino celebrates the mass in Italian following Italian tradition. Ylenia has taken Italian classes throughout the years through Chippewa Valley HS and last year at IACS. She is fluent in reading and writing and her grammar and pronunciation have been improving thanks to the Italian classes she has attended at the IACS. Ylenia s reason for wanting to win this award was that it would give her the opportunity to keep on studying the Italian language: grammar, writing, and reading. She says it will keep me close to my Italian heritage and descent; it will be very helpful from an educational point of view, and it will be very beneficial when I enter the work force to pursue my Ylenia Sandra Bonni career. It is an opportunity to prepare for our college education and whatever and wherever life will take us as individuals. To Mario Russo, Italian has always been a vibrant culture and language. Everyone in his family from his grandparents back were born in Italy. Listening to his grandparents speak always fascinated him, and he has always wished to be able to speak with his grandparents in Italian. Mario is currently a sophomore attending Utica High School. He takes all of the most rigorous Mario Russo and advanced classes possible, and he attends the Utica Center of Mathematics, Science, and Technology, a program for advanced high school students. Even with these classes, he holds a 4.08 grade point average, and he is ranked number one amongst his peers in the graduating class of 2015. His academic aspirations are to one day attend Harvard University and study to become a doctor. Learning Italian will help him to achieve this academic goal and will also allow him to communicate with patients whose first language is Italian. Jacob Stout is 15 years old. His Italian ancestry comes from his mother s parents, Vincenzo and Caterina. Since third grade, he has studied Italian at the Italian American Cultural Center, and with each passing year, he has grown to further enrich his understanding of both the Italian language and culture. Two years ago, he transitioned into the adult language program. Since his high school doesn t offer Italian, he chooses to continue his Italian studies rather than take another foreign language. He found that the advanced pace of the adult classes has greatly increased his fluency, grammar, and pronunciation of Italian challenging him in ways he would have never thought A side benefit of the i n - d e p t h analysis of Italian grammar is that he has a greater understanding of English grammar. possible. Jacob looks forward to continuing to advance his studies of the language through the Italian American Cultural Center. Not only has Italian peeked his personal interest, but also has used it to forge a deeper and more meaningful relationship with his Nonno. Jacob hopes to someday travel to Italy and experience the culture at its purest. Although he hasn t decided on a career path, he is sure whatever path he chooses he will be able to use his Italian skills. Gabriella Griffith attends Eisenhower High School and is in the 9 th grade. She is in the National Junior Honor Society, is a Science Olympiad award recipient, and was honored with an Outstanding Student Achievement award. Gabriella Griffith John presents scholarship to Jacob Scout She would like to study the Italian language because it will broaden her understanding of a different language and culture that will lead to academic success. It is a wonderful language to learn and an amazing culture to be part of. Both of her grandparents were born in Sicily her grandfather in Palermo and grandmother in Trapani. Her grandparents always speak Italian to her, and she would like to be able to have conversations with them. Her family is planning a trip to Italy next year, and it would be so beneficial to communicate with the many cousins she is going to visit. On behalf of the IACS Italian Education Department, Board of Directors, and membership, we congratulate these bright students and wish them continued success.

Their move to Birmingham, Alabama, twelve years ago, was their 24th move in 32 years of marriage. She considers herself an old moving pro. The early years were with the US Army and subsequent have been with her husband s employment with the Automotive Industry. Rosemarie has two children, both are married and live in Michigan and California, and six grandsons and one granddaughter. She moved back home to the Detroit area in January 2012. From the time Rosemarie was young, tea has been a part of her life. Her mother would have ladies over for tea and cards, and Rosemarie would help her set the table. She collected tea cups and saucers, which gave her an opportunity to give her tea-themed gifts for special occasions. Rosemarie s knowledge and real love for tea began about 20 years ago with a friend who taught her to treat herself by relaxing with a cup of tea because she was worth it. No one else was going to do it for her so she was to do it for herself. Treat herself what a new concept. I am worth it and so are you. You are special, and you deserve to take the time to treat yourself with a relaxing cup of tea. The tea ritual can be elaborate or simple. That is what Rosemarie talks about in her tea lectures along with the history of tea; how to brew a perfect pot of tea and the ins and outs of English and American tea rituals. Rosemarie now has an extensive collection of tea cups and saucers, teapots, accoutrements, etc. She loves giving teas and having ladies relax and enjoy the special treatment she brings to the tea experience. Owned and operated Miss Rosemarie s Special Teas Salon and Shoppe, formerly located in Birmingham, Alabama, for five years but closed her doors in September 2010. Rosemarie has authored four cookbooks, which are located online through www. lulu.com, the Hoover Public Library (Birmingham, AL); was frequently featured in The Birmingham News (Alabama); a featured article in Tea Time Magazine and The Tea Experience, a publication by Hoffman Media, which features 18 (must visit) Tea Rooms across the country; NPR interview on green tea, received a certificate from the Specialty Tea Institute and given many lectures, instructions and tea tastings. Rosemarie is currently retired but still loves bringing tea into people s lives. She hopes that you will experience some Joy in Taking Tea with her on Saturday, August 17 th, at the Italian A m e r i c a n C u l t u r a l Center.

On.
