And then there's freeriding, a winter sport that combines a little from each and gives an immediate feeling of freedom. This sport, perhaps not yet widely known, is nothing but a downhill off-piste, which foresees the use of ski lifts and can be practiced both with snowboard or skis. Freeride started in the 90s in the US and it quickly developed various types of racing: timed ones, those defined as "big mountain" which assesses the style of the descent and takes place on steep and rocky slopes, and finally competitions in which the judging is based on maneuvers in air. Those who practice freeride describe it as a violent rush of adrenaline, as an exciting challenge, an indescribable feeling of freedom, a special way to be in touch with nature whilst testing your skills. Markus Eder, the young Italian champion, describes it as such: «It s about going over your limits, seeing what you can do, where you can get to. Often it looks like we have no fear, that we are fools risking everything, but actually it s not like this: we all have fears. It s great to explore ones limits, but you must be scared». There are many places where to practice freeriding in Italy: Courmayeur and Gressoney in Valle d'aosta, Alagna in Piedmont, Madesimo in Lombardy. There are also a lot of facilities for freeriding in Switzerland and France: Diavolezza and Verbier in the first, Chamonix and Val d'isere in the second. di / by FRANCESCA DEMIRGIAN Ci sono lo sci alpino, lo sci di fondo, lo snowboard, il freestyle. E poi c'è il freeride, una disciplina invernale che unisce un po' tutte le precedenti e che dà un'immediata sensazione di libertà. Questo sport, forse ancora non molto conosciuto, altro non è che la discesa libera fuoripista, che prevede l'uso di impianti di risalita e che può essere praticato sia con lo snowboard che con gli sci. La storia del freeride inizia negli anni '90 negli Stati Uniti e velocemente si sono sviluppate varie tipologie di gara: quelle a tempo, quelle definite "big mountain" che valutano soprattutto lo stile della discesa e che si svolgono su pendii scoscesi e rocciosi e, infine, le competizioni nelle quali il giudizio si basa sulle manovre aeree. Chi pratica il freeride ne parla come di una violenta scarica di adrenalina, di una sfida emozionante, di una sensazione di libertà indescrivibile, di un modo speciale per entrare in contatto con la natura mettendo alla prova le proprie capacità. Markus Eder, il giovane campione italiano, lo descrive così: «Si tratta di andare sopra i tuoi limiti, vedere quanto riesci a fare, dove riesci a scendere. Spesso sembra che non abbiamo paura, che siamo dei pazzi che rischiano tutto, ma in realtà è non è così: tutti hanno paura. È bello esplorare i tuoi limiti, ma bisogna avere paura». In Italia sono molte le località per praticare un po di freeride: IL FREERIDE È LA DISCESA LIBERA FUORIPISTA E PUÒ ESSERE PRATICATO SIA CON LO SNOWBOARD CHE CON GLI SCI Courmayer e Gressoney in Valle d'aosta, Alagna in Piemonte, Madesimo in Lombardia. M OTORI MOND OINBL UE M OTORI MOND OINBL UE di / by FRANCESCO RICCI L'Alfa Romeo Duetto è una splendida quarantenne, vintage e moderna allo stesso tempo, immortale grazie al giovane Dustin Hoffman che ne Il Laureato la spinge a tutta velocità verso la chiesa e il finale cult del film. Disegnata da Pininfarina, la Osso di Seppia detta così per via delle somiglianze con la carrozzeria arrotondata in fronte e coda unisce ancora oggi sportività ed eleganza con grande charme. Ora, a distanza di 22 anni dall'ultima Spider, la casa automobilista italiana ha in cantiere un possibile redesign della prima Duetto. Difficile dire che direzione possa prendere, e se manterrà lo spirito dell'originale: una tendenza sempre più in voga tra i produttori d'auto, che, come artisti ossessionati, riprendono le loro opere, le rimodellano, le riplasmano, inseguono una perfezione sfuggente, desiderando versioni più moderne, alla moda e ispirate dai tempi. Successi del passato che continuano ad esserlo nel presente: guardiamo ad una lontana cugina inglese della Duetto, la Mini. Se non faticheremmo ad immaginarci l'originale del '59 accanto ad una Duetto del '66 nel garage di qualche collezionista, lo stesso non potremmo dire della Nuova Mini, opera di BMW, che dal 2001 ha sfornato più di tre milioni di vetture DUETTO MODERN VINTAGE dalla storica catena di Oxford. E continua a farlo, ritoccando linee, design, interni: l'ultima Cooper si è anche accessoriata della quarta e quinta porta, senza sacrificare compattezza, stile e prestazioni nonostante le linee riservate e conservatrici dell'originale siano andate perse, quel feeling da go-kart tutto accelerazione e reattività è sempre lì. Delle scelte, queste, che potrebbe far storcere il naso ai puristi contrari a certi ammodernamenti: se una nuova Duetto Osso di Seppia avrà un destino fortunato come la Mini, ancora non è dato saperlo. Designed by Pininfarina, the Sepia Bone - so called because of the similarities in the body which is rounded in the front and tail - still unites sportiness and elegance with great charm. Now, 22 years since the last Spider, the Italian motor house is working on a possible redesign of the first Duetto. It is hard to say which direction it will take, and if it will keep the spirit of the original model: an increasingly popular trend among car manufacturers, who like obsessed artists, retake their work, they remodel, they reshape, chasing an elusive perfection, wanting more modern, fashionable and new times inspired looks. Quel tratto di costa è difeso da un intrico smeraldino di fiori e foglie che hanno smarrito l origine dei rami, per celare alla vista il segreto degli approdi. Meta perfetta di incursioni e scorribande, è punteggiato da una miriade di nascondigli, anfratti e angoli di verde sfumati apposta per custodire i tesori dei forzieri. Canali di mangrovie spingono le imbarcazioni nel tessuto a maglie strette della vegetazione marina. Più a nord di LA ISLA DE LAS TORTUGAS Ogni anno da maggio a settembre colonie di Embricata, Verde e Caretta Caretta benedicono Cayo Largo con la magica posa delle uova. Un atto di fiducia, un rito millenario, che ha consacrato l isolotto a santuario caraibico delle tartarughe. In un angolo di mondo in cui la solennità lascia spazio alla leggerezza, la nascita dei piccoli di testuggine è uno dei rari eventi che ancora generano commozione. Ogni esemplare depone circa 100 uova per volta. Nel farlo, piange lacrime vere. Lacrime di mera autodifesa fisiologica dalla sabbia molesta, è vero. Ma l impatto visivo resta quello di uno spasmo sofferto, un sacrificio eterno pari solo a quello compiuto dalle ostriche, che generano le perle dal dolore. Playa Paraiso, dove i galeoni ormeggiano su acque distese e i bucanieri festeggiano a riva, lo scenario s ingentilisce, la natura si veste d eleganza e la sabbia bianca scintilla come neve al sole. E qui che il verso delle cocorite si confonde con il canto suadente di creature favolose, metà donna e metà pesce, al cui richiamo è impossibile resistere. Sarà per questo che i corsari sbirciano la laguna di Playa Sirena da lontano, nascosti fra le dune, spiando le meravigliose apparizioni a distanza tale da impedire alle loro note di stregarli. Per raggiungerla, non è necessario seguire Peter Pan in direzione della seconda stella destra, dritto fino al mattino. Basta prendere un comodo volo aereo e planare su quest isola straordinaria dove i pirati sono un eco del passato, e le sirene hanno sapore di leggenda. A dirla tutta, non v è traccia nemmeno di accampamenti indiani, i bimbi sperduti non sono mai stati avvistati e le uniche fatine alate in cui ci si possa imbattere sono vanitose farfalle. This stretch of coast is protected by a tangle of flowers and emerald leaves that have lost their branches, and conceal from view the secrets of the land. A perfect destination of incursions and raids, it is dotted with hideouts, crevices and corners all in green with the purpose to guard treasure chests. Cayo Largo is an arena from a fairy tale. An Island just like Neverland, judging by the size of this limestone crack on the Caribbean Mangrove channels push the boats in the close-knit fabric of marine vegetation. Further north of Playa Paraiso, where galleons moored on water and buccaneers celebrated ashore, the scenario grows, nature dresses with elegance and white sand sparkles like snow in the sun. It is here that the verse of parakeets is confused with the enchanting singing of fabulous creatures, half woman and half fish, whose call is impossible to resist. That must be why the pirates peered at the lagoon of Playa Sirena from far away, hidden among the dunes, watching the wonderful appearances at a distance such as to prevent their notes from bewitching them. Città come Roma, Parigi, New York, dove la sensazione di smarrimento è dovuta in massima parte alla loro straordinaria complessità, ma anche città che, a prima vista, quella complessità non sembrano possederla affatto e paiono provviste di una evidente propensione alla disponibilità. Una di queste, per quanto sia difficile da credere, è proprio Mosca. Esemplare: ci si perde nella piazza Rossa, ci si fa ammaliare dai pinnacoli del Cremlino, si viene accecati da quel corrusco barbaglio di grande orfana della Guerra Fredda, ci si fa sviare dalle nenie e dagli incensi delle chiese ortodosse e la si saluta pensando di averla afferrata per intero, di averne esplorato ogni più intimo recesso. E invece, una volta a casa, ci si ritrova a girare in tondo attanagliati da un dubbio: cos è che ho visto veramente? C è una sola cosa da fare: affidarsi a chi Mosca l ha vista con occhi diversi, a chi di Mosca conosce le lusinghe e ne sa riconoscere i paludamenti, a chi insomma l ha descritta con la sensibilità e l intelligenza di chi ha fatto dell immaginazione la propria ragione di vita. Cominciare da Tolstoj e Pasternak è d obbligo. Anna Karenina e Il dottor Zivago non sono solo pietre miliari della letteratura mondiale, ma anche l unico modo per conoscere una Mosca che non esiste più e che tuttavia si respira ancora intorno alla cittadella del Cremlino. Come non resistere alla tentazione di fare un giro all Arbat, nei pressi della Piazza Rossa, alla galleria Tretiakov, in via Tverskaya, o ai Magazzini Gum? Di tutt'altro tono è la Mosca misteriosa che fa da sfondo al giallo di Boris Akunin, La regina d inverno. Qui un giovane detective deve indagare su una serie di strani suicidi, il primo dei quali avviene in un parco affollato della città. Sempre per rimanere sul giallo e nei parchi, c è Gorky Park di Martin Smith da cui è stato tratto anche un film per la regia di Michael Apted. Un altro bel film è lo struggente Mosca non crede alle lacrime di Vladimir Mensov ambientato nella Mosca vivace e frizzante degli anni sessanta. Chi però più di altri ha svelato il vero volto di Mosca è Bulgakov. Siamo a Mosca nella seconda metà del 800, nel magnifico ristorante Hermitage, uno chef, secondo alcuni anche proprietario del locale, prepara i suoi manicaretti. Lucien Olivier è il suo nome, cuoco russo, dalle origini misteriose. Belga, secondo alcuni, secondo altri francese, anche in considerazione dell abbondanza della salsa usata nella ricetta dell Olivie Salad. Dalle ricerche fatte, però sembra più convincente la tesi che lo vuole belga. Avi a parte, la ricetta ha subito numerosi cambiamenti nel corso della storia passando attraverso aragosta e dadi di lingua, con decorazioni di caviale alla versione quasi vegan (ci sono le uova) dell attuale ricetta a base di dadini di verdure di stagione bolliti e conditi con un'abbondante dose di maionese.
