Children (6): Kilyn, 4TH SEASON at OSU Kevin McGuff was named head coach of The Ohio State University women s basketball program on April 16, 2013, becoming the eighth coach in program history. McGuff s 12-year head coaching career consists of nine years at Xavier University (214-73) and two years at the University of Washington (41-26) before arriving in Columbus. He holds a.703 overall winning percentage with a career mark of In his first season, McGuff led a relatively young and inexperienced group to a record against a schedule strength that consistently ranked in the top 3 throughout the year. The Buckeyes started the season with a win on the road at West Virginia, a team that went on to earn a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament. Overall, Ohio State defeated five of the 64 teams in the NCAA field last season, including a one-point buzzer-beater loss to Gonzaga and a four-point loss at Georgia. But the highlight of the season came in March when the Buckeyes made an improbable run to the Big Ten tournament semifinals, upsetting No. 1 seed Penn State, 99-82, along the way. Ohio State nearly reached the championship game, falling to Iowa, 77-73, in the semifinals. Sophomore Ameryst Alston, a first team All-Big Ten performer, was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 27.7 points and 4.3 assists and hitting 10 3FGs in 15TH OVERALL the three tournament games. Alston ranked third in the Big Ten with 20.3 ppg in conference play during the season. Off the court, McGuff and his staff have worked tirelessly on the recruiting trail and last fall landed the No. 2-ranked recruiting class in the country, highlighted by McDonald s All-American Kelsey Mitchell. And they didn t stop there, signing a pair of top 35 transfers in Kianna Holland (Duke) and Shayla Cooper (Georgetown) from the 2013 signing class in January. McGuff s second year in Columbus started off with a thud as three players suffered season-ending injuries in the first month of practice. But McGuff rallied the team and led the Buckeyes to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in four years. He guided Ohio State to a overall record, a runner-up finish in the Big Ten Tournament and an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes featured the top-scoring backcourt in the country in of Kelsey Mitchell and Ameryst Alston. Mitchell was the first freshman to led the NCAA in scoring at 24.9 ppg and set an OSU and Big Ten single-season record with 873 points. Mitchell also made an NCAA single-season record 127 three-pointers and was named the National Freshman of the Year as well as the Co-Big Ten Player of the Year. 2 ppg and garnered First Team All-Big Ten honors for the secondstraight season. In the post, freshman Alexa Hart developed into one of the best low-post threats in the conference as the progressed. She led the team with 13 double-doubles and blocked an OSU single-season record 129 shots. Hart was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and the Big Ten All- Tournament Team. The Buckeyes took another step towards national prominence in as they earned a No. 2 seed and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Ohio State was ranked in the top-15 all season and finished second in the Big Ten with a 15-3 mark. OSU swept the season series from Maryland who ended up winning the regular season crown. McGuff s up tempo style allowed the Buckeyes to score 86.0 ppg in which shattered the school s single-season scoring record. The team also set school records for points, field goals made and three-point field goals made that season. Kelsey Mitchell again was near the national leaders in scoring, finishing third at 26.1 ppg and breaker her own single-season mark. She was a consensus first team All-American and a finalist for every major national award. McGuff s recruiting class in 2016 was widely regarding as another top-5 class. With the signing of three top-31 players and the addition of three high-level transfers, one service ranked the Buckeyes class as tops in the country. Prior to his arrival at Ohio State, McGuff, a Saint Joseph s College (Ind.) graduate, went in two years at Washington with two berths in the WNIT. In his first season McGuff led the Huskies to a finish -- its first 20-win season since and a trip to the quarterfinals of the WNIT. In the WNIT, Washington went on a memorable run, beating Cal Poly, Utah and Oregon State before falling to San Diego in the quarterfinals. It was the first winning season for UW since and the first postseason appearance since In his final season his Huskie squad finished with a second round finish in the WNIT. On the recruiting trail, McGuff landed the program s first two McDonald s All-Americans in Katie Collier in 2012 and Kelsey Plum in Prior to his stint in Washington, McGuff was the head coach at Xavier for nine seasons. As the head coach of the Musketeers, McGuff compiled a record and set a school record for most wins in program history, reaching the postseason in each season he coached. His five consecutive NCAA tournament appearances was also a school record. During that stretch, McGuff s Xavier teams were consistently the class of the Atlantic-10, sporting a record in nine seasons. In his last two seasons, Xavier went undefeated (14-0) in A-10 play. McGuff led the Musketeers to four A-10 tournament championships, including his final year at Xavier. That season, his team posted a 28-3 record (.903 winning percentage) and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament. McGuff made the NCAA tournament six times overall as the Xavier coach. His pinnacle was an Elite Eight appearance in the season, where his team was one missed layup away from the Final Four. In Cincinnati, McGuff demonstrated he could bring talented student-athletes to the Queen City from across the nation. From , McGuff signed players from 12 states, showing he is capable of recruiting in all areas of the country. The class he signed in 2010 was ranked No. 18 in the country. McGuff took over the Xavier job after a six-year run as an assistant coach at Notre Dame, inheriting a team that had gone the year before. McGuff steered the program to a record, one of the most significant turnarounds for a head coach at that time. While with the Fighting Irish, McGuff was an assistant to legendary coach Muffet McGraw. He was a staff member on the Notre Dame team that captured the NCAA Championship in The Irish reached the Sweet Sixteen four times during his tenure in South Bend and the Final Four twice. Prior to taking the job as an assistant at Notre Dame, McGuff held a similar position with Miami University (Ohio). During his time in Oxford, McGuff was in charge of scouting efforts, internal and external operations of the program, as well as the director of the team s summer camps. The 45-year-old McGuff is married to wife, Letitia. The couple has six children: Kilyn, Keiryn, Lukas, Lake, Lily and Leks. 4 PATRICK KLEIN ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH 6TH SEASON THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY COACHING CAREER 2016-Present Ohio State Associate Head Coach Ohio State Assistant Coach 2010 Ohio State Graduate Assistant Illinois Assistant Coach Ohio State Graduate Assistant Patrick is an incredibly hard worker and is very passionate about Ohio State and our program. - Head Coach Kevin McGuff The season will Patrick Klein s sixth year on the Ohio State staff. He served his first five seasons as an assistant coach and was promoted to Associate Head Coach by McGuff prior to the start of the season. Outside of his coaching duties, Klein in charge of scheduling and plays a major role in donor relations and the academic success of the student-athletes. In his three seasons on McGuff s staff, Klein has helped guide the Buckeyes to 67 victories and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. He has also had a big hand in guiding Ohio State to the top-5 in the country the last two seasons in scoring. The Buckeyes shattered the school s single-season scoring averaging in , averaging 86.0 points per game and topped the 90-point mark 14 times. Working primarily with the post players during his tenure, Klein helped develop rising-junior Alexa Hart into one of the best post players in the Big Ten. Hart blocked a schoolrecord 129 shots as a freshman and led the team with 13 double-doubles. Last season, Hart led the Big Ten during conference play making 68 percent of her shots from the field and averaged 10.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. In addition to the Buckeyes recent success on the court, Klein has played an instrumental role in recruiting over the last three years. In 2014, OSU had a top-5 ranked class that included the No. 1 ranked point guard Kelsey Mitchell and three other top-100 players in Asia Doss, Alexa Hart and Makayla Waterman. A year later, he helped bring in a pair of transfers in Sierra Calhoun and Stephanie Mavunga who were both McDonald s All-Americans. This past year, Klein played a key role in signing another top-5 ranked class that included Tori McCoy (No. 10), Kiara Lewis (No. 24) and Jensen Caretti (No. 31) who were all ranked in the top-31 of the 2016 class. That was in addition to the signing of another high-level transfer in Linnae Harper. Harper was an All-SEC Defensive Team member at Kentucky and a veteran of five Team USA squads. In , Klein helped guide the Buckeyes to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in four years. Ohio State won 24 games and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament as well as the championship game of the Big Ten Tournament. Klein helped the Buckeyes to 43 wins during his first two seasons as an assistant under Jim Foster, working primarily with the post players and recruiting. In in his first year as an assistant in Columbus, Klein helped the Buckeyes to their school-record 10th consecutive NCAA tournament and a 25-7 overall record. Klein, who served as an assistant coach at Illinois from , served as a graduate assistant on Jim Foster s Ohio State staff from and again in 2011 where he assisted in several areas including summer camps, community service and supervising the student managers. During his time at UI Klein played a large role in the development of Illinois post players in addition to scouting, scheduling, recruiting, summer camps and academic mentoring. At Illinois Klein helped the Fighting Illini to 49 wins and two postseason appearances in three seasons and played a big part in Jenna Smith s development into one of the top post players in the country. Klein also helped coordinate summer camps and had a hand in landing three talented recruiting classes. During his first season in Champaign, Klein helped the Illini to a 20-win season, a postseason appearance in and helped Smith earn All-America honors as a sophomore. In November of 2008 Klein helped Jolette Law and her staff sign the No. 3 recruiting class in the country - the highest-ranked class in school history. In , Klein helped a young Illini squad play its best basketball at the end of the season as the team finished 6-5 in the final 11 games after starting Then in the Illini had a 19-win season and earned a trip to the WNIT quarterfinals. In addition to his contributions at Ohio State, Klein also gained experience working with USA Basketball in the summer of He served on the support staff for the U18 FIBA Trials, monitoring and supervising 30 athletes during the trials week and assisting with on-court practice. Then, in August of 2006, he was on Anne Donovan s support staff for the USA Senior Women World Championship Trials, serving as a practice player and assisting the staff with on-court and post-practice workouts. Klein s success isn t solely devoted to basketball. He founded PB& J Consultants, a leadership consulting firm in Columbus, Ohio, in June of 2003 and remains the company s CEO. Klein also is the founder and director of the ibelieve Foundation, which provides leadership, communication and problem solving skills to Appalachian youth and raises money to help send kids to summer camp. During the inaugural year in 2010, the program sent 35 kids to summer camp. Two years ago the program grew by leaps and bounds, sending more than 100 students in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania to camp. In 2014, the program raised more than $220,000 and sent more than 220 students to summer camps. A native of Belpre, Ohio, Klein attended Ohio State, earned a bachelor s degree in business management in 2005 and a master s degree from the Fisher College of Business in March While a student, he served as Director of Tournaments and Leagues for Ohio Sports Plus, Inc., managing AAU and seasonal leagues for over 500 high school athletes. 5 MARK MITCHELL ASSISTANT COACH 4TH SEASON EASTERN KENTUCKY Mark Mitchell is in his fourth season as an assistant coach at the collegiate ranks for the Buckeyes and Coach McGuff. He is the father of current Buckeyes Kelsey and Chelsea Mitchell. In his first year at Ohio State, Mitchell helped mentor sophomore Ameryst Alston to First Team All-Big Ten honors while establishing one of the strongest backcourts in the Big Ten with Alston, Cait Craft and Raven Ferguson. His second season was more of the same as Alston garnered her second-straight First Team All-Big Ten honors and his daughter Kelsey was one of the best players in the country. Kelsey became the first freshman to ever lead the nation in scoring at 24.9 ppg and she set a new OSU and Big Ten single-season record with 873 points. Kelsey Mitchell made an NCAA single-season record 127 three-pointers and was named the National Freshman of the Year. The combo of Mitchell and Alston were the highest-scoring back court tandem in the country. The Buckeyes returned to the NCAA Sweet 16 in Mitchell s third season in He helped guide the offense to a record-setting performance, breaking the school s singleseason scoring average at 86.0 ppg. That was third-best in the country in and the team had 14 games of 90 or more points. Alston and Mitchell were once again one of the top backcourts in the nation and each were named first team All-Big Ten. Kelsey Mitchell was a consensus first team All-American after averaging 26.1 ppg. Mitchell, who has more than 20 years of coaching experience at the top high school and AAU levels, came to Ohio State after spending the previous 11 years as the boys varsity head coach at Taft High School in Cincinnati, where he amassed a record of (.815). Mitchell resurrected the Senator program instantly in his first year, going 22-3 and winning the city championship after inheriting a program coming off 10 consecutive losing seasons. During his tenure at Taft, the Senators won eight Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference titles, nine sectional and four district titles and a Division III state championship in For his efforts, he was voted CMAC coach of the year eight times and the Cincinnati Enquirer coach of the year five times. Being able to work for Kevin McGuff and The Ohio State University is a dream come true, Mitchell said. Coach Mc- Guff and Ohio State have afforded me with an opportunity to continue my growth and development as a coach while molding our student-athletes into successful, productive people. Prior to his appointment at Taft, Mitchell served as an assistant coach at Winton Woods High School from where he helped the Warriors to a Division I state runner-up finish in He also was an assistant coach on the All-Ohio Girls basketball team from Mitchell received his bachelor s degree in physical education from Eastern Kentucky University in 1990 before earning a Master s in Education from Marygrove College in Detroit in While at EKU Mitchell was a four-year letterwinner on the football team as an offensive lineman, helping EKU to two national Division 1-AA semifinal appearances. He earned first team All-Ohio Valley Conference and honorable mention All-America honors in After college Mitchell played briefly in the World League of American Football for the Orlando Thunder in the spring of 1991 before going on to earn his master s degree and begin his coaching career. 6 CARRIE BANKS ASSISTANT COACH/RECRUITING COORDINATOR 1ST SEASON DETROIT MERCY COACHING CAREER 2016-Present Ohio State Assistant Coach/ Recruiting Coordinator Northwestern Assistant Coach South Florida Assistant Coach Detroit Mercy Assistant Coach/ Recruiting Coordinator Carrie Banks joined the Ohio State women s basketball staff in July of She will serve as an assistant coach as well as the recruiting coordinator for the Buckeyes. During her three seasons with Northwestern prior to coming to Columbus, Banks helped guide a young Northwestern squad to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 18 years as well as a pair of WNIT berths. NU won a total of 58 games in her three seasons, including a 23-win campaign in which was the most wins in a season for the Wildcats in almost 20 years. Banks worked closely with NU point guard Ashley Deary who, as a freshman, ranked in the top three in the Big Ten in assists, was an All-Big Ten honoree and a finalist for the Nancy Lieberman Award. She had another All-Big Ten season as a sophomore and in , she led the NCAA with a school-record 141 steals en route to be named the Big Ten s Defensive Player of the Year. Deary was the only player in to average over four assists and steals per game. Banks is no stranger to Ohio as she coached girls AAU basketball for four seasons and also was the junior varsity head women s basketball coach at Dublin Jerome High School from She pursued her master s degree in journalism at Kent State while working as a freelance reporter for the Big Ten Network and a color analyst for women s basketball games. Banks graduated from Detroit Mercy in 2000 with a bachelor s degree in communications and was a four-year letterwinner for the Titans. She continued her playing career after UDM, competing professionally overseas for Grupo Desportivo Bolacesto in V.N. Gaia, Portugal, in 2000 and She then returned to her alma mater prior to the season to serve as an assistant coach during the campaign and also added the role of recruiting coordinator in While with the Titans, Banks helped coach a number of All-Horizon League selections, including Brigid Mulroy (first team, 2010), Sandi Brown (second team, 2009) and Yar Shayok (2010 Horizon League Newcomer of the Year and second-team honoree). BETH HOWE DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS 4TH SEASON THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY Former Buckeye co-captain Beth Howe was officially named director of women s basketball operations on May 21, An OSU scholar-athlete and co-captain of the Big Ten Championship team, Howe worked as an account executive in the Ohio State Ticket Sales office from January 2009 to May 2013, helping increase women s basketball group ticket sales more than 60 percent between the 2011 and 2012 seasons. She also helped serve as Ohio State s primary administrator for the 2010 and 2011 NCAA Tournaments. Beth had just the background I was looking for in our director of operations position, McGuff said. As a former player she has a passion to see this program grow into one of the very best. She s bright, energetic and organized and will help me make sure that we run this program in a very professional manner. A Varsity O Board member since 2009, Howe, a native of Jackson, Ohio, graduated from The Ohio State University in 2005 with a degree in human ecology before earning her Master s degree in sport administration from Belmont University in Nashville in While in Nashville she worked with the NFL s Tennessee Titans as an internet and publications intern and the Nashville Juvenile Court. She also has worked with the Big Ten Network Student U as a color analysis for Ohio State women s basketball games from Having grown up in Ohio and been part of this program as a student-athlete, this is a dream job, Howe said. 7 PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT STAFF BRIAN SEITZ STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH Brian Seitz is in his second year at Ohio State working with the women s basketball and men s ice hockey teams. He is responsible for all aspects of speed, agility, strength and conditioning. Most recently, Seitz was the director of strength & conditioning at Ohio University. He worked with the men s basketball, baseball and softball teams and also assisted with the implementation of the football strength & conditioning program. Prior to arriving in Athens, Seitz was the assistant director of strength & conditioning at Louisiana at Monroe. At ULM, Seitz was responsible for men s and women s basketball as well as lead assistant with football. Prior to being promoted CHALISA FONZA ATHLETIC TRAINER Chalisa Fonza, touting almost two decades of experience at both the professional and collegiate levels, is in her 17th season as head trainer to the Ohio State women s basketball team. A 1995 graduate of the Ohio State master s degree program, Fonza is no stranger to the high standard of treatment and care administered by the athletics training staff. She manages individualized treatment and conditioning programs for each player on a year-round basis. Additionally, Fonza serves as the medical liaison between student-athletes and an all-inclusive sports medicine staff consisting of a team physician, internists, surgeons, dentists, ophthalmologists and a sports psychologist. She also provides classroom instruction. DR. JIM BORCHERS TEAM PHYSICIAN Former Buckeye student-athlete Jim Borchers is in his 12th season as a team physician in the Ohio State athletics program. He is in his fourth year working with men s basketball. In addition to working with the men s and women s basketball programs, Borchers also provides medical treatment for the Ohio State football team. He has previously worked with student-athletes from men s and women s soccer, men s and women s lacrosse, men s and women s tennis, field hockey and softball. A native of Bellbrook, Ohio, Borchers walked on with the Buckeyes and earned four varsity awards as the regular long snapper between 1990 and to assistant director, Seitz was a graduate assistant strength coach at ULM. Seitz went to ULM after a stint as the football strength & conditioning intern at South Carolina. He also completed an internship at High Point, working with a variety of sports including men s basketball, baseball, lacrosse, soccer, track and field and golf. A Springfield, Ohio, native, Seitz received a master s degree in exercise science from Louisiana at Monroe in 2013, and a bachelor s degree in human nutrition from Ohio State in 11. Fonza spent the summer of 2005 with the Washington Mystics of the WNBA, serving as the team s head athletic trainer. Prior to coming to Columbus, Fonza was an assistant trainer at Oklahoma State covering football, men s and women s basketball and golf. She also supervised the student-training staff. Fonza enjoyed similar duties at Cleveland State in 1999 in addition to organizing trainers for the NCAA Volleyball and Wrestling Championships. Her career also includes a stint with the WNBA Cleveland Rockers during their inaugural season in A native of Quincy, Ill., Fonza earned her bachelor s degree from Western Illinois in She is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and an alumna of Phi Kappa Phi Fraternity. He received the Ike Kelley Special Teams Player of the Year Award in A four-year Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a four-year OSU Scholar-Athlete, he graduated from Ohio State in 1993 with a degree in chemistry. He earned his M.D. from Northeastern Ohio University s College of Medicine in 2000 and a master s in public health from Ohio State in Borchers completed his residency in family medicine from Toledo Hospital in 2003 and his sports medicine fellowship from the Northwest Ohio Sports Medicine Institute in Jim and his wife, Mary, have three children: Emily, William and Joseph. ERIC BUCHANAN EQUIPMENT MANAGER Eric Buchanan, a native of Clintonville, Ohio, is entering his 21st year as an equipment manager at Ohio State and sixth with the basketball programs..his duties range from negotiating equipment purchases with various manufacturer representatives to handling game-day equipment related issues. Buchanan has been involved in the equipment industry since 1991, when he served as a volunteer equipment manager for the University of Cincinnati football team. He held that position until he graduated in 1994 with a bachelor of arts degree in sociology. He received a master of arts degree in athletic administration in 1995 from Ohio University, while serving as a graduate assistant equipment manager for OU s basketball, football and track programs. Prior to his appointment at Ohio State in 1996, Buchanan spent a year as an assistant equipment manager at the University of California at Berkeley and worked with the football, women s basketball, swimming and water polo teams. He also was a volunteer intern with the Oakland Raiders while at California. Buchanan currently resides in Columbus. Her responsibilities range from managing the office to aiding the staff with recruiting organization. Meek and her husband, Randall, live in Powell, Ohio. They have one son, Jamie, who is married to Danielle, and a daughter, Amy, who is married to Todd. Amy and Todd have two children, Zachary and Emma. 32
