7 My leisure activities Dove andiamo stasera? It s Saturday and school has just finished for the week. As Giovanni, Francesca and Sophie walk home from school they discuss getting together later in the evening. Ascolta! Listen to the dialogue, Dove andiamo stasera? 10 Summary of definite articles In the dialogue, Dove andiamo stasera?, Sophie suggests inviting along gli altri studenti di scambio (the other exchange students). Gli is used here as a definite article (the). You ve met all the definite articles il, la, l, lo i, le and gli in various units and parts throughout the course. It s worthwhile at this point to summarise all that you ve learnt about definite articles. Look at all the definite articles set out in the table below. Then complete the activity which follows. He/she likes/doesn t like Did you notice that in talking about likes/dislikes in Italian, when a person s name is actually used, the preposition a is stated in front of the name? The verb piacere literally means to be pleasing to someone. In Italian, an idiomatic expression is used which is a little different from the way it is said in English. A Sophie piacciono i film comici. = Sophie likes comedies. (Literally: Comedies are pleasing to Sophie.) A Mario non piace guardare i documentari. = Mario doesn t like watching documentaries. (Literally: Watching documentaries is not pleasing to Mario.) Unit 5 Part 1 15

18 Using gli and le with piacere In talking about likes and dislikes when no person s name is stated: gli piace /gli piacciono he likes non gli piace/non gli piacciono he doesn t like le piace/le piacciono non le piace/non le piacciono she likes she doesn t like Earlier in this part of Unit 5, in the summary of definite articles, you learnt that gli and le are plural forms of the definite article the. Both gli and le, however, can have different meanings. gli can be used to mean to him le can be used to mean to her When gli and le are used in front of a form of the verb piacere, you are are literally saying: gli piace /gli piacciono le piace /le piacciono it is pleasing to him/they are pleasing to him it is pleasing to her/they are pleasing to her Now practise saying what films someone else likes or dislikes. Activity 6 Listen to the speakers on Track 8 as they ask about someone else s likes or dislikes relating to genres of films. Answer each question according to the cues. 20 Volere and Andare In the dialogue, Dove andiamo stasera?, Francesca says that her parents vogliono guardare sempre dei documentari (always want to watch documentaries). Vogliono is the loro (they) form of the verb volere (to want). Volere is also an irregular verb. Remember that irregular verbs don t follow set patterns, so volere is another verb you ll need to memorise. Before focusing on the individual parts of volere, listen to it as it is used in conversation. Ascolta! Listen to the dialogue Volete venire in pizzeria stasera? 23 Conjugating andare You ve met parts of the verb andare (to go) throughout I Primi Passi. In Unit 3 Part 1 you learned to use the singular io, tu lui/lei forms of andare. Remember Giovanni s suggestion in the dialogue, Dove andiamo stasera?: Allora, perché non andiamo in pizzeria a prendere una pizza insieme? In the dialogue, Volete venire in pizzeria stasera? Troy asks: Dove andate? A che ora andate? Thinking about what you already know about endings of verbs, what forms of the verb andare are andiamo and andate? 24 Descriptions using very In the dialogue, Dove andiamo stasera? Francesca describes documentaries as being not only noiosi (boring) but noiosissimi (very boring). Notice that by: removing the final vowel on the adjective noiosi and adding issimi to the adjective the meaning is enhanced from boring to very boring. The meaning, very can be added to other adjectives in similar ways. Let s look at some more examples. 22 I Primi Passi

In Unit 2 Part 3 you learned that adjectives match the nouns they describe in both gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural). 27 Expressing very using molto Another way of saying very to enhance a description is just to add the word molto in front of the adjective in its normal form. Mario è un ragazzo molto intelligente e molto simpatico. (Mario is a very intelligent and a very nice boy.) Questa casa è molto grande. (This house is very big). Questi bambini sono molto cattivi. (These children are very naughty). Le case in questa zona sono molto moderne. (The houses in this area are very modern.) The word molto is not changed in any way. The ending of molto remains as o whether the adjective following it is masculine, feminine, singular or plural. Did you notice in the examples that when molto is used to enhance the description, the adjective describing the noun is always stated after the noun. You can say: You must say: È una bella casa. (It s a beautiful house.) È una casa molto bella. (It s a very beautiful house.) Now show your teacher how well you can apply your learning. 35 Exercises Part 1 Exercises 1.1 to 1.3 Name Teacher Exercise 1.1 Your Italian class has been taking part in a study of different types of leisure activities enjoyed by adolescents. Going to the movies is one of these activities. It s your task to prepare a brief report on the types of movies preferred by adolescents. In completing this exercise you will show how well you can: plan, draft and edit when constructing your own text recognise and use appropriate vocabulary related to film types select and incorporate structures to write and talk about other people s likes or dislikes. Part A You are going to conduct a poll on what types of movies your classmates like to watch. Prepare six questions in Italian related to six categories of movies. You will ask six classmates about their movie preferences using these six categories. Write the questions on the lines provided. Unit 5 Part 1 33

38 Exercise 1.2 Sophie has recently visited Rome with her host family. Read her impressions of Rome below which she has written in her diary. This exercise has two parts. In completing both parts of this exercise you will show how well you can: identify and apply specific characteristics of the language interpret meaning from context and summarise information. Part A On the lines provided, rewrite Sophie s diary entry, enhancing her descriptions either by adding issimo, issima, issimi or issime as appropriate to the adjectives shown in bold or by using molto.
