In inglese, di norma, dopo un sostantivo si usa il numero cardinale (one, two, three, etc.) invece dell ordinale (first, second, etc.) come accade in italiano. Ad esempio, noi diciamo il terzo capitolo mentre in inglese si dice Chapter Three, così come il secondo atto si traduce Act Two. Le frazioni / Fractions Come si leggono le frazioni: ½ ¼ ¾ one half one fourth/a quarter three quarters Come in italiano, quando il numeratore (numerator) è superiore a 1 è necessario volgere al plurale il denominatore (denominator): ⅖ two fifths Le frazioni più complesse si possono leggere utilizzando la parola over: 224/408 two hundred and twenty five over four hundred and eight N.B.: Con le frazioni al di sotto dell 1 si usa la preposizione of prima del sostantivo: (⅕) one fifth of the employees (⅔) two thirds of a litre I decimali / Decimals Come si leggono i numeri decimali 0.5 0.416 BE: nought point five BE: nought point four one six (and not nought comma five); (and not nought point four hundred and sixteen) AE: zero point five AE: zero point one six Attenzione: i decimali inferiori all 1 si possono leggere usando la preposizione of: 0.135 cm nought point one three five of a centimetre ma sono spesso seguiti da sostantivi al plurale, come ad esempio: 0.135 cm nought point one three five centimetres Il plurale invece va sempre utilizzato dopo le frazioni e i decimali superiori all 1: One and a half hours.
Per esempio 22,463 (twenty two thousand four hundred and sixty three) va tradotto in italiano come 22.463 così come 7.8 (seven point eight) corrisponde all italiano 7,8. BE: twenty two thousand four hundred and sixty three. AE: twenty two thousand four hundred sixty three.
Plurale o singolare? Three thousand people; Several million euros; Five dozen eggs; Several hundred times. Three quarters of a pound of grapes is a lot to eat by yourself. (NOT Three quarters of a pound of grapes are a lot to eat by yourself.) 30.48 centimetres is exactly 1 foot. Il verbo al plurale si usa quando si indica il numero di persone o di cose, anche dopo una frazione a numeratore uno: One third of the students are from Japan. Infine, nelle espressioni come: One in/one out of + nome al plurale (uno su..) il verbo può essere indifferentemente al singolare o al plurale One in ten children are/is left handed. One out of two machines is /are out of order.
On the phone sui numeri telefonici). Nella misurazione delle temperature 0 si dice zero : The city temperature may touch 0 C ( zero degree Celsius) on Friday.
