I go to the gym on Sundays. I buy new shoes once a year. When do we use it? 2. Present Continuous. a) Per qualcosa che sta succedendo proprio ora. I m listening to my MP3 player. (in questo istante). b) Per qualcosa che fai in questo periodo di tempo. I m working part-time. (in questo periodo di tempo) c) Per impegni programmati nel futuro. (Lesson 3.3) Tomorrow I m meeting Tom at the pub. Uso il computer ogni giorno. Gioca a calcio tre volte alla settimana. Vado in palestra la domenica. Compro scarpe nuove una volta all anno. A differenza dell italiano, il Present Simple non può essere utilizzato per parlare di azioni in corso in questo istante. Si usa invece il Present Continuous.
Time Expressions Il tempo Present Continuous si usa con: a) espressioni di tempo che possono essere sinonimo di ora - now, nel momento in cui si parla. I m writing you an email now. Ti sto scrivendo una email (adesso). I m not driving at the moment. Non sto guidando in questo istante. He isn t working today! Oggi lui non sta lavorando. Tonight she s wearing an elegant dress. Questa sera lei indossa un vestito elegante. b) espressioni di tempo che parlano di un periodo di tempo nel presente. I m listening to more Jazz music recently. Recentemente ascolto di più la musica jazz. I m looking for a job right now. In questo periodo sto cercando lavoro. He s driving a rental car at the moment. Al momento guida una macchina noleggiata. Present Simple vs Present Continuous I sometimes wear casual clothes. A volte indosso abiti casual. But today I have a job interview, so I m wearing a suit. Ma oggi ho un colloquio di lavoro, quindi indosso un vestito elegante. Why are you wearing sporty clothes? Perché indossi vestiti sportivi? You usually wear smart clothes. Di solito indossi vestiti eleganti. Today I m eating a salad. Oggi mangio insalata. But I often have a sandwich. Ma spesso mangio un panino. I usually work Monday to Friday. 2. Present Simple vs Present Continuous Questions Le domande nel Present Simple iniziano con Do you + infinitive. Per esempio: Do you usually wear a suit? What do you wear to work? Le domande nel Present Continuous iniziano con Are you + gerund. Per esempio: Are you wearing sunglasses? What are you wearing? Closed Questions Closed questions = domande chiuse. Sono domande alle quali si può rispondere solo con yes or no. Iniziano con il verbo ausiliare: Present simple: do Present continuous: are Open Questions Open questions = domande aperte. Sono domande alle quali si può rispondere liberamente con qualsiasi risposta. Iniziano con: who, what, why, where, when, which, how, how often, how much, how long etc, dopo di che si aggiungono l ausiliare + soggetto + infinito. Present Simple: How often do you wear a skirt? Quanto spesso indossi una gonna? Every day, sometimes, usually etc. When do you meet your friends? Quando ti vedi con i tuoi amici? At the weekend, in the evening etc. Present Simple: Do you drive to work? Yes, I do. No, I don t. Present Continuous: Are you driving now? Yes, I am. No, I m not. Vai a lavoro in macchina? Sì, lo faccio. No, non lo faccio. Stai guidando adesso? Sì, lo sto facendo. No, non lo sto facendo. Present Continuous: What are you wearing? Che cosa hai addosso? I m wearing a shirt, a tie, sunglasses etc. Why are you wearing shorts? Perché hai addosso i pantaloncini? Because it s hot, I like them etc.
3. Non-Continuous Verbs Ci sono alcuni verbi che non possono essere usati nella forma progressiva/gerundio e quindi non possono essere usati per formare il Present Continuous. I verbi che possono essere usati nella forma progressiva sono spesso inerenti ad azioni. Per esempio: I am running. He is drinking. They are speaking. She is wearing. I verbi Non-Continuous, ai quali non si aggiunge +ing per formare il Present Continuous sono: 1. Abstract Verbs 2. Verbs of Possession 3. Verbs of Emotion 1. Abstract Verbs - Verbi Astratti to be essere to want volere to need avere bisogno to seem sembrare I am wanting a new dress. I want a new dress. 3. Verbs of Emotion - Verbi che esprimono Emozioni to love amare to like piacere a qualcuno to hate odiare to fear temere/avere paura di I m liking your coat. I like your coat. Negli esempi precedenti, la forma progressiva (+ing) non può essere utilizzata. I verbi non-continuous devono essere impiegati al Present Simple. Le frasi col Present Continuous in questo caso non sono corrette. 4. Vocabulary - Clothing British vs American English trainers sneakers 2.
