It is my sincere hope that 2010 provides you with peace, health and happiness. This year 2010 will continue to be a very busy year for all of us with respect to our beautiful Club and the events and programs that we are sure to prepare. On that note, I extend my sincere congratulations to all of the successful candidates during our most recent election. Also, I extend my gratitude to all of those individuals who participated as a candidate. It is encouraging to know that there are so many people who are willing to volunteer their time to contribute to our Club. From a personal perspective I thank you for giving the new board of directors, and I, this additional three year mandate. I look forward to working with our new team, and I am sure that we will continue to be very busy working on a variety of different initiatives including our ambitious total kitchen renovation. As we begin this new journey, I extend an invitation to each and every one of you. It is my hope that you continue to find time to participate at the Club. Whether by attending an upcoming event, encouraging your children and grandchildren to participate, or by volunteering for one our several organizing committees. President s Message / Messaggio Del Presidente incoraggiante vedere tanta gente volonterosa di impegnarsi e a contribuire alla causa del Club. Dal mio punto di vista personale, vi ringrazio immensamente di aver dato al nuovo Consigio di Amministrazione e a me personalmente, la vostra apprezzata fiducia per altri 3 anni. Sono molto desideroso di unirmi a questa nuova squadra per affrontare il duro lavoro che ci aspetta, specialmente il ristoro dell attuale cucina e con l aggiunta ad essa di una nuova sezione e portarla così, ad un livello molto elevato. Paese storico della Ciociaria: AMASENO Il paese e situato su una collinetta nel mezzo di una valle del tutto circondata da montagne. Prendendo il nome del suo stesso fiume, Amaseno, con le sue origini che risalgono almeno al secolo VIII, ha un importanza del tutto particolare in Ciociaria: la produzione della mozzarella di bufala! La sua abbondanza di acque sorgenti, danno origne al fiume Amaseno, facilitano la produzione di foraggi e particolarmente l allevamento di bufali. I derivanti dal latte di questi animali sono vari, ma quello piu famoso e la gustosissima mozzarella, la quale viene esportata entro l Italia, in quasi tutta l Europa e perfino in nord America. Amaseno e un paese quieto e tranquillo, ove e ancora possibile trovare un ottima varieta di prodotti locali e genuini, tutti questi oltre ai suoi famosi latticini. L artigianato locale è fortemente caratterizzato dalla lavorazione del ferro battuto. Nel centro storico, bello e molto ben conservato, si trova la splendida chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, ove ogni anno, il 10 agosto, viene celebrata la famosa festa di S. Lorenzo (si dice che del suo sangue conservato nella chiesa, si scioglie in occasione della sua festa). Tutte le domeniche, Amaseno offre anche un ampio mercato all aperto. Amaseno is situated on top of a little hill amid a broad valley almost completely surrounded by mountains. The name comes from the name of its river and with its origins that go back to the 8th century, Amaseno is especially important in Ciociaria: it produces lots of mozzarella di bufala, or mozzarella of buffalo. Its territory is rich in underground water, springing out and forming the River Amaseno and facilitating the growing of grasses and other foraging products, therefore, the easy raising of buffalos. Many products are made from buffalo milk, but the most important is the very tasty mozzarella, which is exported within Italy and in some parts of Europe and of North America. Amaseno is a quite and laid back town, where it is still possible to find local, natural products in addition to its famous dairy products. Its leading handicraft product is wrought iron. The church of Santa Maria Assunta is found in Amaseno s beautiful and well kept historical centre, where the festival of S. Lorenzo is celebrated every year on August 10 (it is said that a portion of the saint s blood kept in the church will liquefy on the above date). Every Sunday, Amaseno offers a large street market, where many local and imported goods can be purchased Good Friday Stations of the Cross The stations of the Cross will be held at our club Friday, April 2, 2010 at 5:00 pm. Please bring your family and friends to celebrate this beautiful event. The procession will follow with an exquisite buffet in the hall. The club will be serving a fish dinner from 5:30 pm till 9:00 pm. Please call the club for reservations. SPORTS / LO SPORT BOCCIOFILA The ladies and men Bocciofila have enjoyed another successful year. Our ladies team of Carol and Domenica took 2nd place at the Caboto Club Official Gara in October. Also our in house tournament on December 6th with a turn-out of 18 teams was won by Lisa and Gino, 2nd place Elsa and Giorgio, 3rd place Giovanna and Romeo. Thanks to everyone who participated!! We also had our annual Christmas Party on December 13, everyone had a good time and the Ciociaro Club kitchen staff provided a delicious meal. Our group is growing again and we would like to welcome 7 new members to our Ladies Bocciofila. Anyone interested in joining please contact Anna Lecce or come out on Tuesday nights to watch and learn at our league tournament. Thank you to everyone who has supported us this past year with our fundraising efforts and we hope to see you at our annual banquet which will be held on February 27, 2010. YOUTH SOCCER House League The Ciociaro Youth Soccer Club is proud to announce that it has teamed up with the South Windsor Youth Soccer Club to bring you a new and improved House League. This partnership will allow us to offer a real league with several hundred players and different age divisions. All of the games will be played here at the Ciociaro Club It is open to children born in the 2006 calendar year and up Play starts in May 2010 - Cost $110 per child Registration: Sun. Figli illustri - Famous Ciociari Un popolo, di poeti, di artisti, di eroi, di santi, di pensatori, di scienziati, di trasmigratori,... A people of poets, artists, heroes, saints, thinkers, scientists, and emigrants... CIOCIARIA: A HERITAGE OF WHICH YOU SHOULD BE PROUD! ENNIO FILONARDI (Cardinale, Boville Ernica 1446 - Roma, Castel S. Angelo 1549), fu un personaggio molto stimato presso la Santa Sede e grazie alle sue doti personali, godette la fiducia di sette papi, da Innocenzo VII a Paolo III. Le sue vicende si legarono a quelle delle famiglie Farnese, Colonna, Borgia. Fu vescovo di Veroli per quasi mezzo secolo, Abate commendatario dell Abbazia di Casamari, governatore di Bologna, di Imola, di Castel S. Angelo, della provincia di Campagna e Marittima, di Camerino, Parma, Piacenza e Vescovo di Montefeltro in Romagna e Nunzio Apostolico in Svizzera. Fu proprio in questa veste che riuscì a salvare e staccare parte della Svizzera dalla Riforma Protestante. A Boville rimangono molti edifici fatti costruire dal cardinale: il Catello, la cappella di S. Sebastiano, annessa alla chiesa di S. Michele Arcangelo, la chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie ed il palazzo vescovile di Veroli. Morì a Roma proprio mentre era in corso l elezione papale che, pare, l avrebbe eletto pontefice. La sua tomba è nella chiesa di S. Michele Arcangelo in Boville. ENNIO FILONARDI, Cardinal, born in Boville Ernica in 1446, died in Castel S. Angelo in Rome in 1549. He was highly esteemed in the Holy See and thanks to his personal talents, he enjoyed the trust of 7 popes, from Innocenzo VII to Paolo III. His accomplishments were tied to the Farnese, Colonna and Borgia families. He was Bishop of Veroli for almost half a century, commentator Abbot in the Abbey of Casamari and Governor of Bologna, Imola, Castel S. Angelo and of the province of Campagna and Marittima, of Camerino, Parma, Piacenza and Bishop of Montefeltro in Romagna and Apostolic Nuncio in Switzerland. It was while in this charge that he was able to save and separate part of Switzerland from the Protestant Reform. There are still many structures in Boville that were built by the Cardinal: the Catello, the chapel of S. Sebastiano (now part of the S. Michele Arcangelo church), the church of the Madonna delle Grazie and the Bishop s building in Veroli. He died in Rome while the papal elections where being held. It is said that had he lived through it, he would have been elected pope. His remains are found in the church of S. Michele Arcangelo in Boville Ernica. CHEF S CORNER: Crespelle Fritte Fried Crespelle 100 g. di baccalà, 100 g. di broccoli, quattro fiori di zucca, 100 g. di cimette di cavolfiore, 2 mele, olio, sale. (Gli ingredienti si possono variare secondo i gusti e le stagioni). La pastella: 200 g. di farina bianca, 10 g. di lievito di birra, 2 tazze di acqua, un pizzico di sale 3.5 oz dried cod, 3.5 oz broccoli, 4 zucchini flowers, 3.5 oz cauliflower tops, 2 apples, oil, salt. (Ingredients can vary according to tastes and seasons) Batter: 7 oz flour, 0.35 oz yeast, 2 cups water, pinch salt. In una scodella sciogliere il lievito con l acqua, aggiungere a cucchiaiate la farina setacciata e un pizzico di sale, mescolare e lasciar lievitare per circa mezz ora. Pulire tutte le verdure ed il baccalà già ammollato, spolverizzare solo le verdure di sale, aspettare dieci minuti e asciugare con carta da cucina. Tagliare a tocchetti regolari gli ingredienti, immergerli nella pastella e cuocerli in olio bollente, ma non fumante. In a bowl, dissolve the yeast in water, add two tablespoons of sifted flour and a pinch of salt, mix well and leave it to rise for about half an hour. Clean all the vegetables and the already softened dried cod, sprinkle the vegetables with salt and wait for about 10 minutes. Dry with towel paper. Cut the ingredients into regular pieces, soak them in the batter and cook them in a hot but not smoking oil.
