What are its aims and its theoretical background? What is the aim of identifying the subject of a proposition? 5 SUBJECTS IN ITALIAN That of «Subject» is an abstract syntactic category, the main property of which is agreement with the predicate: A Silvia piacciono le aringhe marinate Silvia è ghiotta di aringhe marinate Other properties co-occur with the definition of subject (agentivity, topicality, givenness, logical counterpart of predicate ), but they are not straightforward to its syntactic definition. 10 december 2015 STOCKHOLMS UNIVERSITET 5

PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPIL il soggetto è il protagonista della storia che compie l'azione o di cui si parla PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPIL Il soggetto è quello che compie l azione. Es: Urlo, chi urla? Io urlo. È triste, chi è triste? Lei è triste. 10 MOST COMMON ANSWERS GIVEN SOGGETTO = A ME PRI Il soggetto è Charlot PRI il soggetto qui è sottointeso ma il soggetto è chi ha guardato il film PRI soggetto: Charlot perché è un nome SEC A me è piaciuta molto la storia di Charlot il soggetto è (me) SEC Il soggetto della frase a volte si trova sul titolo ad es. La storia di Charlot. Il soggetto è Charlot. SEC a chi è piaciuta? A me, quindi il soggetto sono io UNI è una frase diretta e dunque il soggetto è colei che parla ovvero "io" = a me UNI 10 december 2015 STOCKHOLMS UNIVERSITET 10

11 DIFFERENT KINDS OF DIFFICULTIES Primary School Most children cannot reach a level of metalinguistic abstraction: perchè charlot era troppo buffo e il racconto fa ridere sì mi è piaciuta il soggetto è: Charlot perché e il nome della persona Secondary School Notional definitions are used but they do not work in this context: per trovare il soggetto in questa frase basta vedere quella persona o cosa che compie l'azione. In questo caso il soggetto è "a me". Il soggetto è Charlot perchè si parla di lui. College Students use intuitions to get the right answer but are unable to explain why: Bisogna cercare il verbo (è piaciuta), poi ti fai la domanda cosa ti è piaciuto e può essere solo "la storia". Ricollegandoci al discorso di prima si può capire che il soggetto è la storia poichè è la storia che fa l'azione di piacere a me 10 december 2015 STOCKHOLMS UNIVERSITET 11
