1 Dear IS Modena families, Newsletter n 1 - September We hope you ve enjoyed a wonderful and restful summer away from the daily routine with plenty of time to travel and visit family and relatives. We are publishing our first newsletter before term begins to help you get ready for the new year. Please read the following sections to help you make a great start on Monday. NEW STUDENTS, NEW FAMILIES, NEW TEACHERS - A special welcome is extended to everyone who is new to our school. We have many new families from all over the world, as well as new teachers bringing international expertise and skills, and we hope that all those joining us for the first time will enjoy a very happy and rewarding experience in Italy and at IS Modena. As a new member of school please make contact with our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) who will help to introduce the school and put you in touch with other parents in your class. The PTA can be contacted via pta@internationalschoolofmodena.it. We are all eager to kick-off this new academic year, which will undoubtedly be a fantastic learning journey for our students, parents and staff members. An incredibly special year for our school as we prepare our first cohort of students for the IB Diploma exams in May We have a unique and vibrant learning community here at IS Modena and it is with great pleasure that we confirm the growing trend in school enrolments registered over the past few years. The past week we have welcomed our two new staff members and together with our returning staff and office personnel we are working hard to prepare our school to welcome our 215 students. A huge welcome back goes to Ms. Emma McCabe who returns to her position as Grade 1 teacher after her maternity leave. We are pleased to welcome and delighted to introduce our two new staff members, Ms. Angela Pane (EAL- English Additional Language (maternity cover) and PYP Italian Mother Tongue Grades 1-2)and Ms. Veronica Saetti (Teaching Assistant). 2 Newsletter n 1 - September Wesley College Orchestra from Melbourne Australia visiting IS Modena, again Tuesday September 13 th. Exciting event coming up as we prepare to host the Wesley Orchestra from Melbourne, Australia. 14 students aged 14 to 17 will be holding concerts for our students on September 13 th and we will be looking for Modena families to host the students for one night. More information will follow this week. We are pleased to invite our parents to dr.ssa Fungi s workshop Starting a new experience - workshop on transitions: create your way through change and new challenges which will take place on Monday, September 19 th at 13:30 in the Auditorium. Many of our parents may remember dr.ssa Giovanna Fungi, school psychologist in IS Milan, IS Monza and IS Modena, from last year s workshops. We are pleased to confirm that our school will continue to collaborate with dr.ssa Giovanna Fungi starting from this month. She will visit our school on a monthly basis, organize themed presentations and workshops for teachers, students and parents together with carrying out classroom observations. More information on dr.ssa Fungi is available in the newsletter, keep on reading. Welcome Lunch Please find attached to the newsletter mail communication regarding our annual PTA Welcome Lunch 2016, a fantastic opportunity for students, families and staff members to get to know each other while enjoying a typical local lunch. We hope many of you will be able to join us on Saturday 24 th. The PTA can be contacted via pta@internationalschoolofmodena.it. Don t forget our Welcome Coffee Monday morning from 8:30 to 10:30 am in the Auditorium. A perfect occasion to meet the IS Modena community. We hope you ll be able to join us after dropping off your children as there is no bus service on the first day of school. 3 Gentili Famiglie IS Modena, Newsletter n 1-2 settembre 2016 Ci auguriamo abbiate trascorso un estate meravigliosa e riposante, lontani dalla routine quotidiana e con tanto tempo per viaggiare e visitare famiglia e parenti. Pubblichiamo la newsletter prima dell inizio del trimestre per aiutarvi a prepararvi per il nuovo anno scolastico. Per favore leggete le seguenti sezioni così da iniziare al meglio lunedì. NUOVI STUDENTI, NUOVE FAMIGLIE, NUOVI INSEGNANTI Diamo uno speciale benvenuto a tutte le nuove persone nella nostra scuola. Abbiamo molte nuove famiglie da tutto il mondo, nonchè nuovi insegnanti con un bagaglio di esperienze e competenza internazionali, e ci auguriamo che tutti coloro che si uniscono alla nostra comunità per la prima volta possano fare un esperienza piacevole ed appagante qui in Italia. I nuovi membri della comunità scolastica possono contattare la nostra associazione Genitori Insegnanti (PTA) che vi aiuterà a conoscere la scuola e a mettervi in contatto con gli altri genitori della vostra classe. Il PTA può essere contattato via pta@internationalschoolofmodena.it Siamo tutti desiderosi di dare inizio a questo nuovo anno accademico, che sarà indubbiamente un fantastico viaggio formativo per tutti i nostri studenti, famiglie e membri dello staff. Sarà un anno davvero speciale, poichè per la prima volta un gruppo di nostri studenti affronterà gli esami dell IB Diploma a Maggio Abbiamo un unica e vibrante comunità di apprendimento qui all IS Modena ed è con grande piacere che vi confermo il trend di crescita nelle iscrizioni scolastiche registrato negli scorsi anni! La scorsa settimana abbiamo accolto due nuovi membri dello staff e, insieme al resto dello staff e il personale di segreteria stiamo lavorando duramente per dare il benvenuto ai nostri 215 studenti. Un bellissimo evento in programma: ospiteremo la Wesley Orchestra da Melbourne. 14 studenti di età compresa tra i 14 e i 17 anni terranno concerti per i nostri studenti il 13 settembre e cercheremo famiglie che possano ospitarli una notte. In settimana seguiranno maggiori informazioni. Molti nostri genitori ricorderanno la dr.ssa Giovanna Fungi, psicologa scolastica presso la IS Milan, IS Monza e IS Modena, dai workshop tenuti gli scorsi anni. Siamo lieti di confermare che la nostra scuola continuerà a collaborare con la dr.ssa Fungi a partire da questo mese. 6 Getting started Useful information Have you read the: Student/Parent Handbook, Whole School Expectations on Student Behaviour, Anti-Bullying Policy, Whole School Sanction Policy? Please make sure you read the Student/Parent Handbook and the school policies as they contain important information about the school life at International School of Modena. And our Curriculum Guides? Home/School Diaries Our students from Grade 1 onwards will have Home/School diaries shared across all of the schools of our Group. The absence and late/early dismissals slips are found at the end of the school diary. Start of school day drop-off Students can arrive to school from 8:15 onwards. Starting from Tuesday, September 6 th all students Grades 1 to 13 are to be dropped-off in the school entrance. Students will make their own way to their classrooms. End of school day pick-up Kindergarten and Transition classes will be dismissed at 14:50 and pick-up will take place in the school entrance. Grades 1 to 6 will be dismissed at 15:00. Teachers up to Grade 4 will accompany their students to the Auditorium at the end of the day while G5 & G6 students will walk to the Auditorium on their own. Middle Years and Diploma students will be dismissed at 15:00 from classes which means it will take them about 10 minutes to get ready to leave school grounds. Only Kindergarten and Transition parents will be allowed to wait in the school entrance. PARENTS ARE INVITED TO WAIT FOR THEIR CHILDREN INSIDE THE AUDITORIUM OR OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL ENTRANCE, THE ENTRANCE IS DEDICATED TO OUR EARLY YEARS PICK-UP AND IS TO BE LEFT CLEAR AT ALL TIMES. PE bags All our students will be given PE bags, please make sure you label them with your child s name. REMINDER NO BUS SERVICE ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!

7 INFORMAZIONI UTILI Avete letto lo: Student/Parent Handbook, Apettative sul comportamento degli studenti di tutta la scuola, Policy anti-bullismo, regolamento delle sanzioni disciplinari? E le guide curriculari? Vi invitiamo a leggere lo Student/Parent Handbook e le policies scolastiche poichè contengono informazioni importanti sulla vita scolastica qui alla International School of Modena. Diari scolastici I nostri studenti da Grade 1 in avanti avranno lo stesso diario scolastico in dotazione a tutte le scuole del nostro Gruppo. I moduli per le assenze e i ritardi si trovano nelle pagine finali dei diari. Accompagnare i bambini a scuola I bambini possono arrivare a scuola dalle 8:15 in poi. A partire da martedì 7 settembre tutti gli studenti da Grade 1 a 13 devono essere lasciati nell atrio della scuola. Gli studenti raggiungeranno da soli le proprie classi. Ritirare i bambini da scuola Le classi di Kindergarten and Transition verranno fatte uscire alle 14:50 e l area di ritiro è localizzata all ingresso della scuola. Da Grade 1 a Grade 6 verranno fatti uscire alle 15:00. Gli insegnanti fino a G4 accompagneranno gli studenti in Auditorium al termine della giornata mentre gli studenti di G5&6cammineranno da soli fino all Auditorium. Gli studenti di Middle Years e Diploma verranno fatti uscire dalle classi alle 15:00 che vuol dire che ci metteranno all incirca una decina di minuti prima di essere pronti per lasciare la scuola. Solo ai genitori di Kindergarten e Transition sarà permesso aspettare nell atrio scolastico. I GENITORI SONO INVITATI AD ASPETTARE I BAMBINI ALL INTERNO DELL AUDITORIUM O ALL ESTERNO DELL INGRESSO SCOLASTICO, L ATRIO E DEDICATO ALLE MATERNE E DEVE ESSERE LASCIATO LIBERO SEMPRE. 8 IMPORTANT INFORMATION Bus Service Bus routes are determined by the bus company who try to provide the most efficient route possible. Please be aware that your child can be on the bus for up to 1 hour each trip. As part of improving overall safety and efficiency a number of rules for the bus have been developed: Students should be ready for the bus a couple of minutes before their assigned pick-up time. Ensure shoes are clean. Parents are responsible for ensuring their child is on the bus in the morning. Parents must advise the bus company in the morning if their child is not taking the bus. The school is responsible for ensuring students get on the bus at the end of the school day. Please note that buses may leave from school any time from 15:15 to 15:20 in the afternoon. The Office requires a note or from parents before 14:00 if they are intending to collect their child from school and transport is not required. Without notification students will be put on the bus. Students are not allowed to change bus routes for any reason. If there is an emergency, then the School Manager should be contacted and alternative arrangements will be made. Changes in the bus schedules may take place to accommodate new students. We hope you appreciate the bus company try their best to keep these to a minimum. Students must remain seated with their seatbelts fastened at all times while on the bus. Respectful behaviour on the buses is expected from all students. The use of ipads is not allowed while on the bus. Should a child repeatedly misbehave on the bus, then the bus company and the school might agree to have the bus service suspended for that child for a couple of days or more. Security The safety and security of your children is extremely important to us. All parents and visitors must sign in at the office when entering the school building and sign out when leaving. Please help us by immediately informing a member of staff if you see anybody without a visitors badge in the building. We ask all parents to use the outer parking lot and enter through the small gate. Please help us in ensuring that the small gate is closed at all times. The school has an evacuation procedure which will be used in the case of either fire or other security alert. Regular fire and earthquake drills take place throughout the school year.

9 INFORMAZIONI IMPORTANTI Servizio bus I giri delle navette sono definiti dalla ditta del trasporto bus che cerca di fornire il percorso più efficiente possibile. Siate consapevoli che Vostro figlio può dover restare sul bus fino ad un ora per ogni viaggio. Nel tentativo di migliorare la sicurezza e l efficienza, sono state sviluppate alcune regole per l uso del bus: Gli studenti devono essere pronti per il bus un paio di minuti prima dell orario di presa loro assegnato Assicurarsi che le scarpe siano pulite È responsabilità del genitore assicurarsi che il proprio figlio sia sul bus al mattino. I genitori devono informare la ditta del servizio bus se il proprio figlio non deve prendere il servizio bus al mattino. È responsabilità della scuola assicurarsi che gli studenti salgano sul bus al termine della giornata scolastica. Vi preghiamo di notare che i bus possono lasciare la scuola in qualsiasi momento tra le 15:15 e le 15:20. La segreteria richiede un messaggio o un da parte dei genitori prima delle 14:00 se gli stessi intendono prendere il bambino a scuola e il servizio bus non è richiesto. Senza notifica, gli studenti saranno messi sul bus. Agli studenti non è permesso cambiare pulmino per alcuna ragione. In caso di emergenza, è necessario contattare la Direttrice Sclastica e accordi alternativi verranno presi. Cambiamenti nell orario del bus possono avere luogo per accogliere nuovi student. Ci auguriamo comprendiate lo sforzo della ditta del servizio bus di mantenere questi al minimo. Gli studenti devono restare seduti con le cinture allacciate tutto il tempo mentre sono sul bus. È richiesto un comportamento rispetto sul bus da parte di tutti gli studenti. Non è consentito l uso degli ipads sul bus. In caso di ripetuto cattivo comportamento sul bus, la ditta incaricata del servizio bus e la scuola possono concordare sulla sospensione del servizio bus per quell bambino per un paio di giorni o più. Sicurezza La sicurezza e l incolumità dei nostri bambini è estremamente importante. Tutti i genitori e i visitatori devono registrarsi in segreteria quando entrano a scuola e devono segnare l uscita quando escono. Avvisate immediatamente un membro dello staff se vedete qualcuno sprovvisto di Pass Visitatore nella scuola. Chiediamo a tutti i genitori di usare il parcheggio esterno pubblico e di entrare dal cancelletto. Vi chiediamo di assicurarvi che il cancelletto sia sempre chiuso. La scuola ha una propria procedura di evacuazione in caso di incendio o di altro allarme di sicurezza. Prove di evacuazione anti-incendio o anti-sismiche vengono condotte regolarmente nel corso dell anno scolastico.

10 IMPORTANT INFORMATION Celebrating student birthdays in school We welcome the celebration of birthdays in our school however, there are a few guidelines that need to be observed: We will admit into school grounds only nut free birthday cakes or pastries and they will have to be purchased goods and not homemade. You will have to inform the school office at least 3 days prior to the date you wish to bring the cake to school. Written communication via mail is preferable. To avoid disruption in class, students will be allowed to bring cakes and pastries onto school grounds ONLY on birthday occasions. Please refrain from giving your child/children any cakes/tarts/pies and pastries to be shared with classmates. The well-being of our students is our upmost priority and due to the presence of various allergies in our community, students are not allowed to share food. ALL STUDENTS NEED TO COME TO SCHOOL WITH A PERSONAL AND LABELLED REFILLABLE PLASTIC WATER BOTTLE WHICH THEY WILL NEED TO TAKE HOME REGULARLY TO BE CLEANED OUR SCHOOL IMPLEMENTS A STRICT NUT-FREE POLICY No food containing any type of nuts or nut traces is allowed in the school building at any time. Please note: Nutella does contain nuts. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping everyone in our school healthy and safe. For more information about anaphylaxis and nut allergies: Snacks/Drinks: Please note that students may bring only healthy snacks or fruit to enjoy during their breaks. Sweets, crisps, chocolate bars and high sugar drinks (Coke, Sprite, Ice-Tea) are not allowed. No gum is permitted anywhere in the building or on the school grounds. Early Years students bring only fruit. Sun Cream/Sunscreen The school does not provide sun cream/sunscreen for students. Please send it in with your child if you want him/her to wear it during break times. Please ensure that he/she knows how to apply it and that he/she understands that it is not to be shared with other students.

11 INFORMAZIONI IMPORTANTI Celebrare il compleanno degli studenti a scuola I festeggiamenti dei compleanni sono benaccetti nella nostra scuola, tuttavia ci sono alcune linee guida da seguire: Possiamo accettare a scuola solo torte o dolci senza frutta a guscio e devono essere acquistati e non fatti in casa. Dovrete informare la segreteria almeno 3 giorni prima della data in cui intendete portare la torta a scuola. Una comunicazione scritta è preferibile. Per evitare interruzioni nelle lezioni, agli studenti è permesso portare a scuola torte e dolci SOLO in occasione di compleanni. Vi invitiamo ad evitrare di dare a vostro figlio torte/crostate/dolci da condividere con i compagni di classe. Il benessere dei nostri studenti è la nostra priorità assoluta e vista la presenza di varie allergie nella nostra comunità, agli studenti non è permesso condividere cibo. TUTTI GLI STUDENTI DOVRANNO ESSERE FORNITI DI UNA BOTTIGLIA DI PLASTICA PER L ACQUA, RICARICABILE, PERSONALE E RIPORTANTE IL NOME DELLO STUDENTE CHE DOVRA ESSERE PORTATA A CASA REGOLARMENTE PER ESSERE PULITA. NELLA NOSTRA SCUOLA E IN VIGORE UN RIGOROSO DIVIETO DI CONSUMO DI FRUTTA A GUSCIO Nessun alimento contenente frutta a guscio o tracce di frutta a guscio è ammesso nell edificio scolastico in qualsiasi momento. NB: la Nutella contiene frutta a guscio. Ringraziamo per la cooperazione nel mantenere un ambiente sano e sicuro per tutti. Per maggiori informazioni sull anafilassi e l allergia alla frutta a guscio: Merende/bevande: si prega di notare che gli studenti possono portare solo merende sane o frutta da gustare durante le ricreazioni. Caramelle, patatine, barrette di cioccolato e bevande gassate (Cola, Sprite e The Freddo) non sono consentiti. Non è permesso consumare gomme da masticare all interno e all esterno della scuola. Gli studenti delle Materne portano solo frutta. Protezione Solare/Schermo Solare La scuola non fornisce crema solare/schermo solare agli studenti. Vi preghiamo di fornire la crema solare a Vostro figlio se desiderate che la metta durante la ricreazione. Assicuratevi che sappia come applicarla e che capisca che non può essere condivisa con gli altri studenti.

12 BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHTS SERATE DI RIENTRO A SCUOLA These evenings are organized early in the school year to enable parents to visit the school, see classrooms and meet the teachers of their children and other parents. All staff will be available but these evenings should not be used as an opportunity for conferences on individual students. Teachers will talk about their plans for the year and explain routines, requirements, etc. as needed. This evening is meant to provide a general overview and is not a time for conferences or discussions about individual children. Teachers are very willing to meet with you individually at another time if you feel the need. Please speak with them or use the Home/School Diary to arrange an appointment. PTA class representatives will be elected at the end of the Back to School evenings in each grade Queste serate sono organizzate all inizio dell anno scolastico per permettere ai genitori di visitare la scuola, vedere le classi e incontrare gli insegnanti dei loro figli e gli altri genitori. Tutto lo staff è a Vostra disposizione ma in queste serate non ci sarà occasione per incontri individuali. Gli insegnanti parleranno dei loro progetti per l anno e vi spiegheranno le routines, le richieste, ecc. in base alle necessità. Questa serata servirà a darvi una visione d insieme generale e non sarà il momento per colloqui o discussioni concernenti i singoli bambini. Gli insegnanti saranno molto interessati a incontrarvi personalmente in un altra occasione, se lo riterrete necessario. Per favore, parlatene con loro o usate il diario scolastico per organizzare un appuntamento. 13 Parents workshop with dr.ssa Fungi Starting a new experience - workshop on transitions: create your way through change and new challenges. The workshop offers an insight on research, key topics, tips and ideas for making the most out of a new experience, starting from what is most important to each person as an individual, a partner, a parent, a community member. To gradually and mindfully walk towards the workshop date, a starting question for all: what is the thing you are most curious about regarding your new experience? Who is Dr.ssa Giovanna Fungi? Clinical Psychologist and Psychotherapist, she graduated in 2003 at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan with an experimental work on Panic Disorder treatment within the European VePsy Project (Virtual Environments for Clinical Psychology). Her internship in Clinical Psychology was completed at CBM Milano, Centro per il Bambino Maltrattato e la famiglia in crisi, tutored by dott. Stefano Cirillo and Dott.ssa Paola Covini. Dr.ssa Fungi completed a four-years specialisation program at the Post Graduate School of Specialisation in Transcultural Psychotherapy, Fondazione Cecchini-Pace, Milan. Her internship in Transcultural Psychotherapy was completed at the NHS Psychiatric service CPS 11, A.O. Niguarda Ca Granda, Department of Etnopsychiatry. Dr. ssa Fungi collaborates as School Psychologist with Italian public schools and she has been collaboratingwith ISE, International School of Milan and Monza, since 2008 working as Educational Psychologist and counsellor. Dr. Fungi offers professional and personal development seminars, as well as educational workshops aimed at various groups with targeted topics. Dr.ssa Fungi has worked as Professor of Transcultural Psychology at IES Abroad, Institute for the International Education of Students (IES c/o Università Cattolica di Milano) with her colleague Prof. Zaiontz. Dr.ssa Fungi works as psychotherapist in Milan and has experience as a culture broker. She participates in international Congresses and develops research projects with the aim of contributing to the development of transcultural protocols and theories in clinical psychology and education. She completed a Masters in Cognitive Behavioural and Acceptance and Commitment therapies for children and teenagers and is member of ACBS - Association for Contextual Behavioural Science. Chi è la Dr.ssa Giovanna Fungi? ************************************ Psicologa e psicoterapeuta, si è laureata nel 2003 all Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano con una tesi sperimentale sul Trattamento dei Disturbi da Panico all interno del progetto europeo VePsy (Virtual Environments for Clinical Psychology). Il suo tirocinio in Psicologia Clinica è stato completato presso il Centro per il Bambino Maltrattato e la famiglia in crisi a Milano, con il tutoraggio del dott. Stefano Cirillo e della Dr.ssa Paola Covini. La Dr.ssa Fungi ha completato un programma quadriennale di specializzazione presso la Scuola di Specializzazione in Psicoterapia Interculturale, Fondazione Cecchini -Pace, Milano. Ha completato il tirocinio in Psicoterapia transculturale presso l A.O. Niguarda Ca Granda, Reparto di Etnopsichiatria. Collabora come Psicologa scolastica con scuole pubbliche italiane e dal 2008 lavora come Psicologa Scolastica con ISE, International School of Milan, Monza. La Dr.ssa Fungi offre seminari per lo sviluppo professionale e personale e workshop destinati a gruppi specifici su argomenti mirati. Ha lavorato come docente di Psicologia Transculturale presso IES Abroad, Institute for the International Education of Students (IES c/o Università Cattolica di Milano), con la collega Prof.ssa Zaiontz. Lavora come psicoterapeuta a Milano ed ha esperienza come mediatrice culturale. Partecipa a congressi internazionali e si occupa di progetti di ricerca finalizzati a contribuire allo sviluppo di protocolli internazionali e teorie nell ambito della psicologia clinica e dell educazione. Ha concluso un Master avanzato di specializzazione in psicoterapia cognitivo comportamentale dello sviluppo di terza generazione ed è membro di ACBS - Association for Contextual Behavioural Science.
