3 SPEAKERS LAURENCE BRITSTOW-SMITH, HM CG DIRECTOR OF UKTI ITALY Laurence Bristow-Smith, was appointed Consul General and Director General for Trade and Investment on 12 November Laurence Bristow-Smith comes from Hastings on the south coast of England. He was educated at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne where he took a B.A in English Language and Literature (with the History of Art and Architecture as a subsidiary subject) in He stayed on at Newcastle to lecture and to study the work of Chinese-born artist and writer Mervyn Peake, for which he received his Ph.D. in two boys, who he was bringing up alone following the death of his first wife in and more opportunities for sailing small boats, a favourite hobby. In 2004, he remarried to an English sculptress and interior designer and in 2005 moved to Milan. His appointment as Consul General and Director General for Trade & Investment reflects his long interest in working in the commercial and economic sphere. 13 the number of days it takes to set up a business in the UK, according to the World Bank. This is compared to the European average of 32 days. The same year, after a brief spell as an ice cream man, he took a contract with the Moroccan government as first Maître de Conférénces and then Educational Adviser, based at the University of Rabat. He returned to the UK to join the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in 1985, working in the department dealing with Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. He studied Chinese at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and went on to live and work in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China, where he concentrated on trade and economic issues. Laurence returned to London in 1992 to spend two years as Head of the FCO s China Section before taking up a post in the Department of Trade & Industry, where he worked with the UK s electricity and water industries, exporting privatisation expertise and financing major infrastructure projects across Asia and eastern Europe in the aftermath of the collapse of communism. He was working in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia within weeks of the Dayton cease-fire, and made nine trips to Kosovo in the months following the Serb withdrawal. At this period, he was also lecturing in International Economics as an expert in decentralising ex-socialist economies. In 2000, he moved to Norway where he became Head of Trade and Investment at the British Embassy in Oslo. This gave him more time to spend with his Throughout his career, Laurence has continued to write on subjects that interest him, to review books and to write and direct amateur theatre productions, particularly pantomime. He has also written an as yet unstaged musical and numerous songs, some of which have been recorded. He speaks good Chinese and French, as well as some Norwegian, Italian and Moroccan Arabic. He is passionate about cooking, sailing and Elizabethan and Jacobean drama. He has recently published a book about the English artist Alan Rankle. He also hopes to write a book on Harold Nicholson one day when he gets the time. 8 SPEAKERS EDWARD CHAPLIN HM AMBASSADOR, CMG, OBE Mr Edward Chaplin CMG, OBE is Her Majesty s Ambassador to the Italian Republic and San Marino. Mr Chaplin took up his appointment on 19 October EDWARD CHAPLIN HM AMBASSADOR, CMG, OBE Edward Chaplin CMG, OBE è l Ambasciatore britannico presso la Repubblica italiana e San Marino. Il Sig. Chaplin ha assunto il suo incarico il 19 ottobre Edward Chaplin joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1973 after graduating from the University of Cambridge. Early postings included Muscat and Brussels, and a year at the École Nationale d Administration in Paris. Returning to London in 1979, he was appointed Private Secretary to Lord Soames, who had joined Mrs Thatcher s first government as Lord President of the Council, Leader of the House of Lords and Minister for the Civil Service, with additional responsibilities for foreign and European affairs. He was therefore part of Lord Soames staff when the latter was appointed Governor of Rhodesia, in December 1979, to implement the Lancaster House agreements and bring the country to independence as Zimbabwe in Mr Chaplin returned to the Near East and North African Department of the FCO in 1981, as desk officer for Lebanon, Israel and the Occupied Territories, before being appointed to Tehran in 1985 as Head of the Political Section. Back in London in 1987, Mr Chaplin spent two years in the FCO s Personnel Department and then two years on secondment to Price Waterhouse Management Consultants in the City of London. In 1992, he was appointed Deputy Permanent Representative at the UK Mission to the UN and other International Organisations in Geneva. Mr Chaplin returned to London in 1996 as Head of the FCO s Middle East Department, at a time dominated by the international community s dealings with Iraq and Iran. He was appointed Ambassador to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in 2000, and then recalled in 2002 to serve as the FCO s Director for the Middle East and North Africa. In 2004, after the demise of Saddam Hussein s regime, Mr Chaplin was appointed British Ambassador to Iraq, re-establishing the Embassy after a 13-year break in relations between the two countries. Immediately before coming to Italy, Mr Chaplin spent 8 months on sabbatical as a Visiting Fellow at the Centre of International Studies in Cambridge. Mr Chaplin is married to Nicola, a teacher. Their three children are at present pursuing their education at universities in the UK: Stephanie, Tom and Juliet. Between 1994 and 1997, Cahn was Deputy Head of the European Secretariat of the Cabinet Office where he was responsible for co-coordinating Government policy towards the European Union, as well as an advisor to the UK Prime Minister and other ministers on EU issues. Trade policy and promoting the interests of British business have been recurring themes throughout his career. I am excited by the opportunity to take over at UKTI at a moment when our response to the many challenges of globalisation is critical, he said, on taking up the role as Chief Executive. Sir Andrew s appointment lasts for four years. He was awarded a knighthood in the 2009 New Year Honours. Founded by the Grimaldi brothers in 1947, the Group activity began in the goods transport sector with the Liberty ships, purchased from the United States fleet, followed then by passenger transport, deriving from the large post-war migration. In 1969, the Group launched a regular link between Italy and the UK for the transport of Fiat vehicles, intended for the British market. The operational range of the services offered quickly expanded beyond the original borders and the maritime links operated by the Group currently serve more than 120 ports in 45 countries. 19 WINNERS ANGELA MISSONI INTERNATIONALISATION BUSINESS AWARD MISSONI S.p.A Tai and Rosita Missoni s third-born, Angela began assisting her mother in the conception and creation of the women s collections at the age of eighteen. This gave her the chance to reveal and express her innate feel for fashion, to acquire her own views on the subject of clothing design. The hands-on experience also made for an invaluable way to learn all the steps in the process. She did image development for some of the key licenses, too, such as the main line accessories and childrenswear. In the early to mid eighties, Angela became the mother of three children. When she returned to the company she began both designing a collection under her own name and working in tandem with Rosita, devoting serious attention to the main line. This set in motion a progressive restyling of the Missoni fashion vision for women. With brothers Vittorio and Luca, today Angela is co-owner of Missoni S.p.A. He holds a Ph.D in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Drexel University and two Masters, in Science and in Telecommunication Engineering from Drexel University and Politecnico di Milano. He has been working as a researcher at Politecnico di Milano since During his research studies Daniele developed a novel class of reconfigurable antenna systems that constitutes now the core technology of Adant products for RFId and MIMO communications. He is a world expert in reconfigurable antenna systems. He is a member of the IEEE and has authored about 20 publications between international journals and conferences. Michele was born in Italy in He graduated from Politecnico di Milano in 1990; in 1997 he completed a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Essex (UK), with a thesis entitled An Anisotropic Model of the Electromagnetic Properties of the Melting Layer, and Comparison with Radar Observations, under the supervision of Prof. A.R. Holt. He was Assistant Professor at DEI from 1993 to Since 2002 he has been Associate Professor in Applied Electromagnetics. Research activities include antennas, radarmeteorology, electromagnetic wave propagation in the troposphere, and electromagnetic compatibility. Since May 2004 he has been responsible for the experimental activities of the CE.S.A.R.E. laboratory of the Politecnico di Milano, located in Busto Arsizio, and dedicated mainly to Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC). He has been responsible for numerous research contracts, signed with both public entities and private companies.
