111 Abstract In this thesis, investigated. continuous-phase modulation (CPM) Systems are It is shown that any CPM system can be decomposed into a continuous-phase encoder (CPE) and a memoryless modulator (MM) in such a way that the CPE is a linear (modulo some inte ger P) time-invariant sequential circuit and the MM is also time invariant. This decomposition is exploited to obtain alternative realisations of the CPE (and hence alternative implementations of the CPM) and also alternative forms of the optimum deco ding algorithm. The cascade of the MM, the waveform Channel [that we assume is characterized by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN)], and the demodulator that operates over one symbol interval, yields a discrete memoryless Channel (DMC) which can be studied without the distraction introduced by the CPE. If P divides the size of the CPM input aiphabet M, and M is power of 2, there exists an equivalent CPM system whose CPE is a binary convolutional encoder. Such a system combines in a natural way with an external binary convolutional encoder and the cascade of the external encoder with the CPE is itself a con volutional encoder. The obvious advantage can be treated in a unified manner. a is that both encoders For continuous-phase frequency shift keying (CPFSK), a subclass of the CPMs, the design coders combining in the "natural" way which is of external convolutional en with the CPE has been studied. Examples show that such "natural" combinations slightly improve the energy efficiency with respect to traditional solutions. For the design of the external convolutional encoder one assumes
IV that the energy constraint (specified by the energy to noise ratio Eb/No and by the probability of error Pe) and the system para meters [i.e. the dimensionless rate r (of the external encoder), the size M of the CPFSK modulation scheme and the modulation in dex h] are given. In a more practical Situation, however, only the energy constraint and the bandwidth constraint, the latter speci fied in terms of the information rate-to bandwidth ratio 71/'B, are given and the system parameters have to be found. A systematie Solution to this problem is given.
VI migliorano leggermente l'efficienza energetica rispetto a soluzioni "tradizionali".
