8 FRANCU PILLONI Prefazione L opera che avete in mano è il risultato del lavoro di ricerca del 2005 nei paesi dell Alta Marmilla, rivolto agli anziani che hanno dato la loro disponibilità non solo a raccontare le leggende della tradizione, ma anche pezzi della vita e dell esperienza personale. Il fatto che tutti gli intervistati abbiano reso possibili le riprese filmate è altresì importante perché è l unico modo per socializzare non solo il contenuto dei racconti, così come lo rendiamo per iscritto, ma l abilità nel dire e la magia dei suoni della lingua sarda di questo territorio, dove le parole sono antiche almeno come i muri delle case che si conservano, dove siamo stati accolti con grande amicizia. STORIE DI MARMILLA Non tutte le storie raccolte potevano entrare in questa opera: abbiamo scelto quelle esemplari nelle diverse categorie, privilegiando la versione fornita dagli anziani che meglio possiedono il dono di raccontare. Per questo motivo e non per altro, alcuni paesi sono ampiamente rappresentati e altri lo sono meno; quelli che non figurano affatto meritano egualmente perché hanno fornito forse meno storie, ma più canzoni e mottetti, preghiere o notizie: altri aspetti della cultura ai quali eravamo egualmente interessati. STORIES OF MARMILLA Preface The work you are reading is the result of a research carried out in the year 2005 through the villages of the Alta Marmilla area. It gathers traditional legends, but also stories of real life and personal experience. It is a fundamental point that all the elderly people who have been interviewed allowed us to film them while speaking. This is the only mean able to convey the magic sound of the Sardinian language and the ability of the story tellers. The words they speak are as ancient as some walls of their houses, where we have been welcomed in true friendship. The stories we have gathered are too many to be included in a single work. We have chosen the most depictive and have divided them in six different categories. When necessary, we have preferred the version given by the most talented story teller. This is the only reason why some villages are widely represented and some others aren t. Those which have not been included in this work are equally noteworthy. Although they have donated us only a few stories, they have been particularly generous as concerns songs, or mottetti, prayers or other cultural elements which are also included in the research field. 8

10 FRANCU PILLONI Introduzione MARMILLE STORIE DI MARMILLA Cosa sono le marmille, marmiddas in sardo? Il termine fu codificato con la divisione amministrativa del territorio da parte del Giudicato (regno) di Arborea con l istituzione della Curatoria di Marmilla. Il termine non fu coniato con l occasione, perché esisteva già. A quando risale? Forse non lo sa nessuno con certezza. Una traccia si rinviene nel nome di un paese, Villamar, in sardo Biddamara, che faceva parte appunto della Curatoria della Marmilla. Se sappiamo cos è una bidda (villa), sappiamo anche cos è una mara: un canale di scolo per l acqua proprio delle campagne pianeggianti di Villamar, di Pauli Arbarei (pauli è palude), di Lunamatrona, di Turri, di Ussaramanna innanzi tutte. Questi paesi sono fabbricati in pianura e si comprende come avessero una mara nell abitato. Quel territorio dunque era conosciuto come quello dove is maras-canali di scolo attraversavano l abitato (ancora oggi, anche se bonificati): era il territorio con la mara in bidda o meglio con la mara me in bidda come si dice da quelle parti, trasformato col tempo in mar (-a) m(-e in b-) idda, Marmidda dunque, italianizzato in Marmilla (bidda = villa). Qualcuno, partendo dal termine italiano, ha pensato a Milla maris (mille mari), dato che il termine italiano -mila ritorna in sardo col la doppia elle, -milla. Ma mai e poi mai STORIES OF MARMILLA Introduction MARMIDDAS What are marmille, or to say that in Sardinian, marmiddas? The word was coined during the administrative division of the land made by the Giudicato (Reign) of Arborea, together with the institution of the Curatoria di Marmilla. The word had not been coined for that event because it already existed. When does it date back to? Probably nobody knows for sure. A sign is found in the name of a village, Villamar, in Sardinian Biddamara, which was part of the Curatoria di Marmilla. We know what a bidda (latin: villa, village) is and we know as well what a mara is: a drain for water used in the flat countryside of Villamar, Pauli Arbarei (pauli means marsh), Lunamatrona, Turri, Usaramanna. These villages had been built on the plain and it is easily understood why they had a drain in the built-up area. That land was thus known as the one where is maras the drains went through the built-up area (still today they do, even though they have been reclaimed): it was the land with the mara in bidda or better, with the mara me in bidda as they say in that region. This expression has changed through time, and under the influence of Italian has become Marmilla (bidda = villa). Somebody, starting from the Italian word, has interpreted Marmilla as milla maris (a thousand seas) since the Italian suffix -mila in Sardinian goes with a double l, -milla. 10

La Curatoria di Marmilla era un territorio ben delimitato, mentre attualmente si indicano genericamente come Marmilla anche i territori che erano individuati come Curatoria di Parti de Montis, Curatoria di Parti de Useddus, Curatoria di Parti de Valenzia o de Brabaxana. Quando e perché è successo? Tutta colpa del football, come diceva mia zia che non riuscì mai a capire perché gente sana di mente si accalorasse correndo dietro una palla di cuoio, anche se piuttosto grande! Nel secondo dopoguerra, alla fine degli anni Quaranta, credo il CSI (Centro Sportivo Italiano) di San Gavino propose un torneo di calcio estivo per le squadre di quei paesi che non riuscivano ad avere un campo sportivo per tutto l anno, ma si arrangiavano nei campi coltivati, dopo estirpate le fave o mietuto il grano. L avevano chiamato pomposamente Campionato della Marmilla e avevano invitato non solo i paesetti della Marmilla vera e propria, ma anche quelli di altre Curatorie, come Curcuris, Masullas, Usellus, che con la Marmilla sapevano di non entrarci per nulla. Ma tant è. La gente, a Curcuris e a Usellus, si chiese: Ma noi cosa c entriamo con la Marmilla?, e conclusero: Bah, finché ci vogliono, chi se ne frega!. Così accadde che prendendo parte al torneo, diventarono un po marmillesi anche loro. Negli anni Settanta fu invece la politica a combinarla grossa, istituendo la Comunità STORIES OF MARMILLA Yet duasmilla, centumilla (two thousand, a hundred thousand) never change into duasmidda, centumidda Thus this approach reveals its weakness. Why and when this has happened? The fault is all of football, as my aunt used to say: she could not understand how sane people could get so excited just running after a leather ball! After World War II, at the end of the Forties, the Sport Centre of San Gavino organized a summer football tournament for those teams which did not have a football field and used to play in the cornfileds, after the reaping. They pompously called it Championship of Marmilla and invited not only the villages of the real Marmilla, but also those from different Curatorie, such as Curcuris, Masullas and Usellus, whose people knew very well they did not belong to Marmilla. People in Curcuris and Usellus, would ask: What have we got to do with Marmilla? And they decided: As long as they want us in the tournament, who cares? It happened that from that tournament on, they began to feel a sense of belonging. In the Seventies politics caused troubles, when the Comunità Montana dell Alta Marmilla (a local governement institution, literally: Mountain Community of High Marmilla) was instituted: since true Marmilla had nothing to do with the mountains, they simply added the adjective high as a shortcut. The stories included in this project all come from the research made through the villages of the former Comunità Montana dell Alta Marmilla, the 17 th in Sardinia, which 12

14 FRANCU PILLONI Montana dell Alta Marmilla: visto che quella vera, la Marmilla tout court, non c entra nulla con i monti, aggiunsero l aggettivo Alta e si misero il cuore in pace. Le storie di questo progetto provengono da una ricerca effettuata nei comuni della ex Comunità Montana dell Alta Marmilla, la XVII della Sardegna, che comprende 18 paesi: Albagiara, Ales con Zeppara, Assolo, Asuni, Curcuris, Gonnosnò e Figu, Mogorella, Morgongiori, Nureci, Pau, Ruinas, Senis, Usellus con Escovedu, Villa Sant Antonio, Villaverde. Queste storie fanno parte di una ricerca più ampia sopra tutti gli aspetti della cultura, ricerca mai completata a causa della soppressione dell ente per aggiustamenti di tipo istituzionale. STORIE DI MARMILLA STORIES OF MARMILLA includes 18 municipalities: Albagiara, Ales with Zeppara, Assolo, Asuni, Curcuris, Gonnosnò and Figu, Mogorella, Morgongiori, Nureci, Pau, Ruinas, Senis, Usellus with Escovedu, Villa Sant Antonio, Villaverde. These stories are part of a wider project including many different cultural aspects. The project will not be completed because the local government office has been suppressed according to the new structure of territorial institutions. 14

16 FRANCU PILLONI Piano dell opera Abbiamo diviso l opera per argomenti, indipendentemente dalla località in cui abbiamo raccolto la testimonianza. In verità molte storie ci sono state raccontate con poche varianti in molti paesi, a testimonianza della unitarietà della cultura del territorio, anche se gli abitanti di ciascun paesetto fanno a gara per evidenziare minime differenze, sottolienando le pecche altrui e passando sotto silenzio le proprie. I capitoli sono: 1 - I racconti più antichi 2 - Racconti di coraggio, di meraviglia e di paura (diavoli, streghe, spiritate e morti che appaiono) STORIE DI MARMILLA 3 - Racconti di vita (tra favola e verità) 4 - Racconti divertenti 5 Racconti di animali 6 - Racconti maliziosi STORIES OF MARMILLA Work Plan The work has been divided by subjects, regardless of the place where the testimony has been gathered. In fact, some of the stories have been told in more than one village. From village to village, the stories changed slightly, showing the fundamental cultural unity of the territory. Nontheless, it is worth saying that people from each village underlined the smallest differences, pointing at others flaws and leaving out theirs. 20 FRANCU PILLONI 1 I RACCONTI PIÙ ANTICHI 1.1 LA LEGGENDA DILUXIA ARRABIOSA (Lucia Intrattabile) Nelle campagne tra Ales, Curcuris, Morgongiori e Pompu, nel versante occidentale della collina Is Mandonis, c è un menhir chiamato Furconi (forcone) de Prabanta o de Luxia Arrabiosa, vicino a delle grotticelle scavate nella roccia, le Domus de Gianas, forrus (forni) per gli antichi. La leggenda, molto nota nel territorio, è stata raccolta identica a Morgongiori, a Curcuris e nei paesi vicini. STORIE DI MARMILLA In Prabanta, dove sorgeva un villaggio, viveva Luxia Arrabiosa Perché Arrabiosa? Perché era intrattabile; non aveva pazienza con nessuno; si alterava per un nonnulla Ah!, sempre inquieta era Proprio così. Come sai, al sabato allora si confezionava il pane per tutta la settimana. Capitava che passassero i poverelli anche dei paesi vicini per elemosinare un pezzo di pane caldo. Ma Luxia, che era dura di cuore, mandava via i mendicanti in malo modo senza elemosina. Uno di questi pregò e pianse per paura di morire di fame e Dio, che lo aveva sentito, si meravigliò: Possibile si chiese Dio che esista gente dal cuore così duro?. Detto e fatto: il sabato seguente si recò a Prabanta a mendicare, vestito di stracci. STORIES OF MARMILLA 1 THE OLDEST STORIES 1.1 THE LEGEND OF LUXIA ARRABIOSA (Lucy the shrew) In the countryside near Ales, Curcuris, Morgongiori and Pompu, in the western slope of a hill named Is Mandonis, there is a menhir named Furconi de Prabanta or de Luxia Arrabiosa (Furconi means pitchfork, Prabanta is the name of the place). In the immediate vicinity, there are many small caves digged in the rocks, the Domus de Gianas (houses of the witches), forrus (ovens) for the ancients. The legend is quite common in the territory and has been gathered in identical versions in Morgongiori, Curcuris and in nearby villages. Long time ago there was a village in Prabanta. Luxia Arrabiosa lived there... Why was she called Arrabiosa? She was a shrew, she was impatient, and got always furious about anything! I see... she was fretful. That s right. In those times, as you know, each saturday we used to bake the bread for the whole week to follow. It happened that poor people from the village would pass and beg for a piece of bread. Luxia, who was ill-natured, would send the beggars away giving them nothing. One of the beggars cried and prayed God because he was afraid he would die of hunger. God heard him and aked himself: is it really possible that such hard-hearted people exist? The next saturday He went to Prabanta dressed in rags, to beg for a piece of bread. Can you please give me something, mistress? he asked at the door of Luxia, who was 20

Un altra volta, forse STORIE DI MARMILLA Della leggenda circola un altra versione che ricalca quella classica di Medea, che girovaga in cerca dei suoi figli, ma è chiaro che nulla si rapporta col forcone e col forno. Fino a qualche tempo fa, il forno era pieno di sassi che simulavano i pani in cottura, sicuramente opera di qualche pastorello che vi risiedeva col gregge, giusto per aggiungere colore all antica leggenda. Che il menhir sia un simbolo fallico è cosa fondamentalmente accettata; che questa pietra eretta sia stata scandalosa agli occhi delle autorità religiose cristiane, è verosimile: ecco allora una leggenda che disarma la naturalità del simbolo e lo trasforma in un più onesto forcone, ponendo all attenzione delle madri di famiglia modelli negativi da evitare e la prassi della carità cristiana da praticare. Gli davano l elemosina e spesso lo ospitavano per la notte, perché era piacevole ascoltare le storie che raccontava e i consigli di saggezza che donava. Per questo era conosciuto come Martino di Paraulas Bonas (Buone Parole). Capitò che il diavolo, la Bestia, sotto le sembianze di un bel giovane, energico e spiccio di favella, un giorno si presentò in casa del riccone per chiedere la mano della figlia. Fece grande impressione anche perché aveva detto di essere ricco e di buona famiglia. Il ricco gli rispose: Vieni accompagnato da tuo padre, se l intenzione è seria. Sabato prossimo assicurò il forestiero verrò accompagnato. Anche la figlia era contenta perché quel giovane era davvero bello. Anche troppo! borbottò la madre Pare che ti spogli con gli occhi!. La voce dell imminente fidanzamento corse in paese anche fuori, e la notizia arrivò alle orecchie di Martino che subito si mise in viaggio.
