Bari) Oggetto: upgrade di ALICE Caro Direttori, durante l ultima riunione di CSN3 tenutasi il 13 e 14 Giugno in presidenza a Roma abbiamo discusso l attività di upgrade dell esperimento ALICE. La collaborazione ALICE ha deciso di concentrarsi sull upgrade del tracciatore interno e le sedi coinvolte in ALICE hanno iniziato dell attività di R&D a questo proposito, attività che è stata approvata dallacsn3. Dovuto alla mancanza di fondi per il 2011 questo R&D è condotto solo con risorse prese dalle dotazioni di gruppo. A seguito della discussione in commissione basata anche sul parere dei referees abbiamo deciso che nella riunione di Settembre sarà proposto un piano più preciso per quanto riguarda l ammontare totale dell investimento (in consumi e inventario ) e sulla sua ripartizione nei prossimi 4-5 anni. Questa decisione è rimandata a Settembre perché la collaborazione internazionale ALICE terrà in luglio una riunione per finalizzare il piano già in parte concordato sull upgrade e per preparare le richieste da portare alla prossima riunione del RRB. All interno di questo scenario la CSN3 ritiene indispensabile informare i Direttori delle sedi interessate che l attività di upgrade di ALICE è stata avviata. Questo è importante perché in questo periodo si stanno prendendo decisioni, in occasione della preparazione delle richieste per il 2012, sull utilizzo dei servizi di sezione e del relativo personale tecnico o tecnologo. Il fatto che i dettagli e le risorse sull upgrade di ALICE saranno dati a Settembre non deve in ogni caso penalizzare le attività dei gruppi in questi mesi e contiamo invece sul fatto che le richieste dei gruppi di ALICE per il prossimo anno sull utilizzo dei servizi siano ben tenute in considerazione. 3 Upgrade scope A first motivation and objective for the ITS upgrade is represented by the potential large increase in sensitivity to heavy flavour physics that can be obtained by improving the impact parameter resolution A study of the physics scope of a new ITS and the corresponding requirements for its implementation will be addressed in the next 8 month by 4 working groups Preliminary studies with a fast simulation tool show that the a new Pixel layer at ~22mm radius with radiation length in the range 1% to 0.3% improves the DCA resolution (with respect to the present ITS) by a factor 2 to 3 The physics reach of a silicon tracking system at large rapidity in front of the Muon Spectrometer and FoCal is presently being studied The goal is the preparation of a Conceptual Design Report (CDR) by Autumn

4 Timeline The upgrade should target the Phase I ( ) shutdown The scope of the upgrade Phase I should be well tailored to what can be reasonably prepared and tested within the next five years and installed in 15 months. The full upgrade program might require a two step approach with a partial upgrade in Phase I and the completion in Phase II (2020 and beyond) Decisions on upgrade plans in terms of physics strategy, detector feasibility, funding availability, should be taken in 2011 Expression of Interest: ready Preparation of a technical proposal till summer 2011 R&D for Phase I: Production and pre-commissioning for Phase I: Installation and commissioning for Phase I:

6 Cost Estimate A very coarse estimate for different upgrade options (remarks: to be used with a lot of caution given that at this stage of the project the layout and technologies to be adopted are not yet defined). These numbers include only the construction cost (production, testing and assembly), but not R&D, commissioning and integration. This estimate is based on the cost of the technologies employed for the construction of the present ITS detector. Insertion of a new pixel detector layer inside the present ITS. The new pixel detector would be located at a few millimetres radial distance from a new beam vacuum chamber with a radius of about 20mm. Cost estimate: 1.5 MCHF Replacement of the present ITS silicon pixel detector (2 layers) with a new pixel detector consisting of 3 layers, the first one being located as close as possible to the beam-pipe. Cost estimate: 3 MCHF Replacement of the entire ITS detector with 3(4) layers of pixel detectors (innermost ones) followed by 4(3) layers of silicon strips detectors. Cost estimate: 12 MCHF Forward telescope based on the concept of 6 planes for a total of about 0.18m 2 of sensitive area. Cost estimate: 2 MCHF 6
