Alex trained as a languages teacher and has been working in Australia and Italy in various capacities as a teacher- educator, translator and education director. He joins the education team at COASIT to support the teaching and learning of Italian in NSW. Alex can be contacted on the numbers below. Alcuni bambini di origine italiana ne avranno sentito parlare dai genitori oppure dai nonni. La storia tradizionale della Befana è di una vecchietta che nella notte dell epifania porta regali o carbone ai bambini. Le caratteristiche della Befana sono presenti nelle seguenti filastrocche. 9 Curriculum K-12 Directorate DIMMI 8 7th Week of the Italian Language 7a Settimana della Lingua italiana Italian and the Sea La lingua italiana e il mare Every year in October the Direzione Generale per la Promozione e la Cooperazione Culturale of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs launches the Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo, a weeklong celebration of the Italian language in the world. The theme of the 2007 edition is Italian and the Sea. Landings and departures, explorations and commerce, industries, landscapes and loves in the language that is a bridge in the Mediterranean. The sea has always been connected to the history of Italy. The sea has inspired poets and artists. It has driven explorers to find new continents and people to find a better life in new countries. Along the wide roads of the sea both the Italian language and its dialects have acquired a new life and enriched the life of other languages. There are many events slated as part of the 7 th Week and are under the auspices of the Consulate General of Italy in Sydney. The week has been extended to a longer period of time to allow participation in the numerous events dedicated to the promotion of the Italian language around the state including Armidale, Newcastle and Wollongong. Mediterraneo: Mare Nostrum or new Frontier? The theme of the Sea in the New Italian Migration Literature, Maria Cristina Mauceri, 23 November at 6:30pm at the Istituto di Cultura, Sydney. The lecture will be in Italian and will discuss the theme of the sea in the narrative of authors who write in Italian and live in Italy, although they were born elsewhere.

The Wollongong event earlier this year drew a very big attendance as many Italians from the community came to see the journey that they had undertaken to come to Australia.

L Ufficio scolastico del Consolato generale D Italia in Sydney è lieto di comunicare che due studenti dei dipartimenti d Italiano delle università del New South Wales, sono risultati quest anno tra i dieci vincitori nel concorso (su base mondiale) per il miglior componimento sul tema: La lingua italiana e il mare d Italia L annuncio ufficiale dei vincitori è stato dato a Roma nel corso della cerimonia ufficiale d apertura dela settima edizione dela Settimana della lingua italiana nel mondo Gli studenti che hanno conseguito il prestigioso riconoscimento sono: Luisa Marzullo (University of Sydney) e Maria Mastro (University of New England, Armidale) Essi riceveranno come premio una raccolta di libri e di video italiani e i loro componimenti, insieme a quelli degli altri vincitori, potranno essere pubblicati a cura del Ministero degli Affari Esteri.italiano. Il concorso,che si svolge ogni anno sul tema prescelto per la settimana della lingua, è riservato agli studenti delle università di tutto il mondo, I componimenti, dopo una prima selezione interna, vengono poi giudicati in Italia da una giuria di cui fanno parte, tra l altro, rappresentanti dell Accademia della Crusca,la più prestigiosa istituzione linguistica italiana. L ambito riconoscimento è il segno dell alta qualità dell intervento svolto nel New South Wales nel settore dell educazione. 13 Curriculum K-12 Directorate DIMMI 12 HSC study days 2007 in Griffith and Lismore Two very successful HSC study days were held in Griffith and Lismore in Term 3 Griffith 24 July at Marian Catholic College Students from high schools in Griffith were invited to participate in a study day to prepare for the HSC. Lismore 28 August at Trinity Catholic College This day was attended by a number of schools in the Lismore area. Advice was offered on how to approach each of the four skills and each section in the exam and study advice was also included for the students. Giornata di preparazione all esame di stato per gli studenti di italiano a Lismore Lismore: il 28 agosto si è svolta un altra giornata di studio in preparazione all HSC per gli studenti di italiano che frequentano l anno 12 nella regione di Lismore. Hanno partecipato tre scuole: St John s College Woodlawn, St Francis Xavier, Lennox Heads e Trinity Catholic College presso il Trinity Catholic College di Lismore. Le professoresse di Lismore hanno lavorato con gli studenti dei tre livelli: Beginners, Continuers e il giorno dopo con gli studenti del corso dell Extension Agli studenti sono stati dati consigli utili alla preparazione per gli esami di stato per la lingua italiana ed hanno avuto l opportunità di praticare la nostra lingua con le loro insegnanti. All iniziativa hanno preso parte 30 studenti che studiano l italiano ai tre livelli offerti per l esame di stato. È stata anche un occasione per alcuni insegnanti di italiano che hanno accompagnato i loro studenti a questa giornata e che operano nella zona di Lismore per incontrarsi e discutere l insegnamento e l apprendimento della lingua italiana. Questa giornata a Lismore fa parte di una serie di giornate simili offerte a Sydney e Griffith e che sarà offerta pure a Wollongong.

14 Curriculum K-12 Directorate DIMMI 13 Mock HSC speaking trial There was an overwhelming response to the second mock speaking trial held at the International Grammar School in Ultimo on Saturday, 18 August. Over 100 students from several schools registered to attend the day. Each student was allocated a time slot to be examined. A team of teachers assisted on the day to run students through a mock speaking exam. Inoltre quest anno, per il secondo anno, dopo il succeso dell iniziativa l anno scorso, è stata organizzata una prova d esame in preparazione all esame per la valutazione della lingua parlata. Sabato 18 agosto presso l International Grammar School ad Ultimo, cento studenti hanno avuto l opportunità di parlare come prova d esame con un insegnante di italiano. Hanno assisto a questa giornata 12 insegnanti di italiano dalle scuole di Sydney. 15 Curriculum K-12 Directorate DIMMI 14 New text and prescriptions for Stage 6 extension course Teachers of Stage 6 will already be aware that new prescriptions and a new text have been proposed for the Extension course in Consultation papers were sent to schools earlier in the year. Please refer to Board of Studies bulletin and website for further notification of changes. New resource for Italian on TaLe Ascolta! Ascolta! is now live and downloadable. DET schools can access the resources through the Teaching and Learning Exchange (TaLE) It will be available for sale on CD in the near future to other systems and states. Ascolta! Ascolta! is a series of learning objects designed by the Centre for Learning Innovation (CLI) to assist students of Italian develop their listening skills in Italian. It contains two parts: Entrata Proseguimento Each part contains five sections. In each section students listen to one or more spoken texts and then complete a number of online and offline activities. The activities can be incorporated into a range of Italian language programs. The texts are generally longer than those appearing in the BOS Beginners specimen paper. Each text has a number of associated activities. Examples include interactive matching, cloze, true/false, multiple choice and short answer questions, for which immediate feedback is available. Many activities require students to apply higher order skills to demonstrate their understanding of the texts. Offline tasks require students to use the information in the spoken texts for another context, purpose or audience. Each part contains a section for teachers with: Links to the syllabus and syllabus outcomes Links to Quality Teaching Additional resources, including links to web sites Links to downloadable transcripts of all audio files. Teachers can also download the mp3 audio files. Students can complete the activities in any order. In the case of students following the New South Wales Stage 6 Italian Beginners syllabus Entrata will generally suit Year 11 students and Proseguimento will suit Year 12 students. However teachers will also find that some activities are appropriate for Continuers in Stages 5 and 6. When completed the package will include textbook, student pack (workbook & student CD-Rom), Teacher s resource and assessment kit, teachers audio CDs The workshops were held at Santa Sabina 18 September and St Ives 19 September A further workshop will be held in Wollongong in November. The development of this resource has seen the collaboration between two states, NSW and Victoria. Two teachers from NSW were involved in the development of this new material: Liana Trevisan and Sophie Kearns from Loreto Kirribili. 23 Curriculum K-12 Directorate DIMMI 22 Exhibition Mostra Sophie Steffanoni Una bellissima mostra alla Parramatta Heritage Centre sulla vita e lavori di un artista italiana di importanza storica dal 3 novembre al 3 febbraio. SOPHIE STEFFANONI HER LIFE AND ART Annette Butterfield Guest Curator Parramatta Heritage Centre from Nov 3 rd 2007 until Feb 3 rd 2008 Open seven days a week from 9.00am -5.00pm The Discovery Sydney women Impressionists of the late 19 th century are rarely mentioned in art history books. Very few of their works have survived and many remain only names in faded catalogues. Sophie Steffanoni was one of them. Her work, however, was not hidden by layers of stories and social prejudice. It was literally hidden behind a wall. My grandfather, William Steffanoni, was Sophie Steffanoni s brother. He so loved the sister who raised him that after her death in 1906 at age 32 he encapsulated her works in three trunks pushed through a hole in the laundry wall in the foundations of his home in the Eastern suburbs, where my mother and I found them 80 years later.

24 Curriculum K-12 Directorate DIMMI 23 My mother, her closest surviving relative, knew nothing of the existence of Sophie Steffanoni s work which lay hidden. In true pirate tradition the treasure contained gold in abundance in the form of examples of gold bullion embroidery painstakingly worked by my great grandmother, Sarah Ann Steffanoni, and her 3 daughters, Essie, Sophie and Alice. In the second trunk were many oil paintings stripped off their wooden stretchers and stored flat. Some were dirty and insect damaged but they were clearly the work of a professional artist. The signature of Sophie Steffanoni identified the artist, and the dates ranged from 1890 to The discovery of the paintings, diary, letters and books belonging to Sophie Steffanoni for the first time allows a member of the Sydney women Impressionists to be brought out and reassessed in a new context, not stifled by the same social restrictions the assessment of her work may have undergone at the time it was created. Research has revealed that it is quite likely that she was taught by Tom Roberts and worked with Jane Sutherland (of the Heidleberg Impressionists) in Melbourne. The quantity (the largest known body of work by a Sydney woman artist of this period) as well as the quality of the collection highlights the importance of this discovery, even though it must be presumed that many of what she would have considered her best paintings those which were sold (around 50 including 22 from the Art Society of NSW exhibitions) are not currently in the public domain. Fortunately she did retain a few favourites to decorate her room, including her first painting, View of Middle Cove, 1890 and Among the Peach Blossoms, 1901, her entry in the Federation exhibition which toured Australia. In the exhibition at the Parramatta Heritage Centre from Nov 3 rd 2007 until Feb 3 rd 2008 are 54 paintings and a beautiful gold embroidered Torah cover identified as Steffanoni work and lent by the Great Synagogue. The works are accessible to Primary students as Art, Social History, Family History, Immigration and Secondary Art students (as a case study of a Sydney Woman Impressionist) and Textiles and Design (Needlework).
