2 Un anno va via. Non lascerà a noi un buon ricordo di sé. Non crediamo nelle false consolazioni, tuttavia dinanzi ai soprusi di una delle più buie crisi che si ricordino, non ci rimane che la speranza. E non per costruire l'involucro a un'ingannevole illusione, ma perché vogliamo essere testimoni, malgrado tutto, di un ottimismo che qua e là riverbera i suoi luminosi lampi sulla realtà d'ogni giorno. Testimoni, noi, di quella Bellezza salvifica che il nuovo numero di Free Time consegna, una volta ancora, ai suoi lettori. E ancora altre novità di ampio respiro internazionale. Tra feste e ambasciate, accademie e mondanità, in un gustoso mix di cultura ed evasione, ecco Free Time, il magazine italiano accreditato in molte sedi diplomatiche e distribuito nelle istituzioni e negli alberghi più prestigiosi, grazie anche alla collaborazione con la Fondazione Roma Capitale. Insomma, un numero da godere, al di là e a ristoro dei mali sociali e delle personali ambasce, con la certezza che questo nostro vecchio dolente mondo, tra abiezioni e dolcezze, risorga, ancora una volta, con rinnovata grazia. 4 PREMI / AWARDS Giunto alla sua 33 edizione il Premio, organizzato da L Accademia Internazionale La Sponda presieduta da Benito Corradini, ha lo scopo di sottoporre alla ribalta internazionale quelle personalità del mondo imprenditoriale, artistico e culturale che si sono particolarmente distinte per la loro professionalità. Nel corso delle varie edizioni il Premio ha raggiunto una risonanza sempre più vasta che ha travalicato il simbolo delle Fontane di Roma per collocarsi in un contesto decisamente più cosmopolita. Nel corso degli anni il Premio è stato assegnato a personaggi che hanno fatto la storia nella loro attività professionale come Federico Fellini, Alberto Sordi, Nino Manfredi, Giulio Andreotti, il Rabino Elio Toaff per portare alcuni esempi del solo contesto italiano. Particolarmente significativo il riconoscimento che è stato dato in questa edizione al Presidente Giorgio Heller nella suggestiva cornice dell Auditorium della Conciliazione in Roma che per l occasione era particolarmente gremito. La Fondazione,infatti, è costituita da appena un anno ed è nata in un contesto particolarmente difficile per i suoi compiti istituzionali che sono proprio quelli di portare investimenti stranieri sul territorio romano ed il suo hinterland. Infatti la crisi, che vede coinvolte nella recessioni le economie di molti Paesi, sembrava rendere impossibile il compito della Fondazione ma se si conosce un po la storia del suo Presidente si capisce che Giorgio Heller non è uomo che si scoraggia facilmente ma anzi le difficoltà sembra che lo stimolino. 6 SPAZIO / SPACE Mariano Bizzarri, è professore di patologia presso il Dipartimento di Medicina Sperimentale dell Università La Sapienza (Roma), dove dirige il Systems Biology Group ( Tiene corsi universitari a Boston (Mass., USA) e a Tomsk (Russia). E direttore del Systems Biology Laboratory e cofondatore della Italian Society for Space Biomedicine and Biochemistry ( E membro fondatore del Consiglio per i Diritti Genetici (2002) ed è vicepresidente della Associazione Italiana di Metabolomica (Assimet). Dal 2005 è membro del Consiglio Scientifico dell Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI) e dal "SPAZIO E MOLECOLE" Prof. Mariano Bizzarri, Head del Systems Biology Group, Dip. di Medicina Sperimentale, Università La Sapienza Roma, Presidente del Consiglio Scientifico dell'agenzia Spaziale Italiana Responsabile Settore Aerospaziale e Membro del CdA della Roma Capitale Investments Foundation di Ernesto Girlando / traduzione Michael Cardarelli 2011 ne è diventato il Presidente. E autore di circa 100 pubblicazioni internazionali e di una quindicina di volumi a carattere scientifico e divulgativo. È attivamente impegnato in associazione con altri Centri Italiani ed Internazionali, a proporre una nuova teoria cancerogenica, prevalentemente incentrata sul tumore come malattia tissutale, governata da dinamiche non-lineari, proprie dei sistemi complessi (Systems Biology Studies). In quest ambito ha finalizzato le ricerche dell ultimo decennio alla scoperta di nuovi composti anti-tumorali, estratti dalle cellule staminali di pesce e dalle piante, mettendo a punto due nuovi brevetti. La trasposizione clinica di queste ricerche ha consentito di conseguire importanti progressi nella cura dei tumori del fegato, del pancreas, del colon e della mammella. Nell ambito della Biomedicina spaziale è attivamente impegnato nel definire una teoria generale delle interazioni tra Gravità e Sistemi viventi, finalizzata a determinare quali alterazioni genetiche e biofisiche vengono a crearsi nel corso dei viaggi spaziali. D. Professore, qual è il tema centrale delle ricerche che conduce all Università La Sapienza, presso il Systems Biology Lab? Il mio laboratorio, che comprende una decina tra ricercatori e dottorandi, ha indirizzato la propria attività principalmente allo studio delle interazioni complesse che regolano la vita e il differenziamento delle cellule e dei tessuti. Il concetto chiave è rappresentato dal fatto che il cancro non nasce da una cellula isolata dal suo contesto, ma da un tessuto il cui destino, prima ancora che dai geni, è dettato da fattori biochimici e biofisici che si esplicano a livello del cross-talk tra le cellule e il loro micro-ambiente (stroma). Questo ha delle importanti ripercussioni pratiche, dato che impone di spostare l attenzione dai singoli geni ai fattori che regolano l interazione cellula-stroma. Per questo nel nostro Laboratorio ci siamo concentrati su molecole naturali (come la melatonina, gli estratti di semi di uva e l inositolo), o su nuovi farmaci (come quelli ottenuti da cellule staminali di pesce o dall uovo di gallina) capaci di modulare complessivamente la biofisica delle cellule e la loro interazione con il micro-ambiente. In questo modo abbiamo potuto ottenere sulle colture cellulari il blocco della replicazione tumorale, l aumento dei processi che portano alla morte delle cellule cancerose ed anche la riconversione di queste in cellule normali. Il significato di questi studi indica quanto sia importante inserirsi a livello delle comunicazioni che si stabiliscono tra cellule e tessuto, al fine di dirigere i processi, piuttosto che puntare sulla eliminazione fisica della cellula malata, come fanno la chemio e la radioterapia. Alcuni di questi studi sperimentali sono stati già verificati a livello clinico con ottimi risultati, che ci hanno permesso di brevettare due nuovi composti: uno ottenuto dal pesce Zebrafish ed uno formulato in base agli estratti da albume di uovo. Applicazioni cliniche (oltre a quelle già note per la melatonina) sono previste anche per l inositolo (che si è tra l altro rivelato utile per favorire i processi di fertilità nelle donne affette da sindrome dell ovaio policistico) e per gli estratti di semi di uva (che hanno mostrato una straordinaria potenza antitumorale, dando ragione agli epidemiologici che da sempre indicano quanto sia importante assumere da 1 a 2 bicchieri di vino rosso al giorno). È ipotizzabile, fermo restando la necessità dei trattamenti convenzionali per tutta una gamma di tumori, che lo sviluppo di questi nuovi trattamenti possa affiancarsi a quelli tradizionali per conseguire maggiori opportunità di guarigione, soprattutto nei casi refrattari ai farmaci chemioterapici. Un secondo ambito di ricerche riguarda invece le modificazioni indotte dalla microgravità sulla struttura e sulla funzione delle cellule e dei tessuti. Stiamo lavorando per costruire una teoria generale che spieghi come le strutture biologiche rispondano ai vincoli biofisici tra i quali la gravità costituisce indubbiamente un fattore preminente che ha contribuito a plasmare l evoluzione sulla Terra. Si tratta di un tema affascinante ma che ci permette di capire come qualunque definizione di Vita non possa prescindere dalla gravità: l assenza completa di gravità rende probabilmente impossibile lo sviluppo di qualunque forma vivente. Professore, leggendo il suo libro La mente e il cancro si direbbe che è il mondo dell Io che è malato, che la malattia colpisca quando all Io, alla ragione, si concede uno strapotere che soffoca e imbriglia quell energia antica che trova sfogo e rappresentazione, ancor oggi, nel mondo delle fiabe, nei miti, nei riti. È impensabile concepire lo sviluppo di una malattia come il tumore al di fuori del contesto complessivo. I fattori endocrini, immunitari e mentali svolgono un ruolo rilevante, ormai ben acclarato sia a livello sperimentale sia a livello clinico. L esistenza di guarigioni spontanee ha ricevuto una solida conferma statistica. Proprio queste dimostrano che se esiste una guarigione spontanea, questa deve necessariamente essere promossa da un meccanismo neuroimmunobiologico che sappia e possa attivare una complessa serie di reazioni a cascata che bloccano e quindi uccidono la cellula neoplastica. La questione da porsi è dunque la seguente: esiste un guaritore interno? E se si, quale è il suo substrato organico? Quali reazioni vengono ad essere attivate per riuscire a sconfiggere una patologia tanto complessa e letale come il cancro? Ed infine, come è possibile accedere a quella complessa rete di interconnessioni tra organi e sistemi per dirigerne l attività in funzione della guarigione del paziente? Numerosi studi - sia retrospettivi che prospettici - hanno sottolineato l esistenza di una connessione significativa tra l esistenza di determinati tratti di personalità, depressione e maggiore incidenza di cancro. Per altro verso, l atteggiamento mentale assunto nei confronti della malattia neoplastica, influenza in modo considerevole l evoluzione della malattia di base. In uno studio di alcuni anni fa, per esempio, si metteva in evidenza come le diverse reazioni emotive e psicologiche adottate dalle pazienti affette da carcinoma del seno condizionano in modo significativo la probabilità di sopravvivenza: a fronte di un tasso di guarigione dell 85% a 13 anni nel gruppo di malate definite come combattive, il gruppo di pazienti caratterizzate da un atteggiamento di sfiducia e di depressione presentava un tasso di lungoviventi non superiore al 20%. Parimenti due studi randomizzati su tre hanno verificato l utilità di un trattamento di sostegno psicoterapeutico nel migliorare non solo la qualità di vita dei pazienti neoplastici, ma altresì nel prolungarne significativamente la durata. Questi dati hanno concorso a dare risposta affermativa a due questioni cruciali: può il paziente essere considerato a pieno titolo il protagonista della propria salute? Può egli concorrere ad attivare consapevolmente i meccanismi neurobiologici su cui riposa il cosiddetto guaritore interno? Il sostegno sociale, emozionale, le tecniche antistress, meditative e psicologiche, e più in generale qualunque fattore capace di promuovere una positiva catarsi, possono aiutare significativamente il benessere e la prognosi di pazienti affetti da patologie in cui è dominante il coinvolgimento del sistema immunologico? La risposta a questi interrogativi pur con tutte le cautele e precauzioni del caso deve essere oggi senz altro ritenuta positiva. 8 9

7 SPAZIO / SPACE Quali programmi portate avanti presso Agenzia Spaziale Italiana nell ambito Biomedico e Biotecnologico? L ASI ha promosso sin dal 2005 un articolato programma di studi volti a definire l impatto della microgravità e delle radiazioni sulla vita. Gli uomini che viaggiano nello spazio sono infatti esposti a radiazioni elevate, ad un regime di gravità vicino allo zero (che si avvicina al 50% di quello terrestre solo su Marte), a drammatiche fluttuazioni temperatura (-150 C/+ 150 C), in condizioni cosiddette estreme in cui viene soppresso il normale ritmo circadiano (governato dall alternarsi del giorno e della notte) e l influenza del campo magnetico terrestre. Capire come questo ambiente anomalo stravolga la normale fisiologia dell uomo è essenziale non solo per tutelare la salute degli astronauti, ma altresì indispensabile per porre le basi del futuro dell esplorazione umana interstellare. Non solo, ma le conoscenze apprese in questo contesto sperimentale si stanno rivelando determinanti per meglio capire molte patologie che interessano l uomo qui sulla Terra. Tra queste vi è l osteoporosi, le diverse forme di distrofia muscolare, le disabilità neuro-motorie e il cancro. Per altro verso, le peculiari condizioni microgravitazionali della Stazione Spaziale Internazionale possono essere sfruttate per la sintesi di cristalli, proteine, tessuti e farmaci privi di impurezze e pressoché perfetti, successivamente utilizzabili sulla Terra. Grazie ad un accordo con l Università di Tor Vergata, l ASI ha recentemente promosso la costituzione di un Polo Didattico e di Ricerca Scientifica Spaziale (PDRS), specificamente rivolto allo studio della Biomedicina e delle Biotecnologie spaziali. Il Polo permetterà di coordinare ricerche di avanguardia in tale settore e contemporaneamente di far crescere una nuova leva di giovani ricercatori. Per questo l Università La Sapienza ha da pochissimo istituito il primo Master in Biomedicina e Biotecnologie Spaziali, affidandomene la direzione. Quale è il rapporto tra ASI e Fondazione Roma Capitale Investments? L ASI rivolge un attenzione speciale al settore delle tecnologie emergenti e considera essenziale sostenere e strutturare il rapporto tra Enti di Ricerca e Piccole e Medie Imprese, al fine di promuovere la ricerca e il trasferimento tecnologico in questo settore. Poiché tale obiettivo è in qualche modo nel cuore degli obiettivi della Fondazione, ci è sembrato doveroso sostenerla in questa direzione fornendo al Presidente Heller il contributo dell Agenzia. Colgo l occasione per sottolineare quanto sia importante che organismi come la Fondazione possano adempiere al ruolo di catalizzatori, riunendo intorno ad un unico tavolo uomini di scienza, capitali, istituzioni e imprese, grandi e piccole. Questo è particolarmente rilevante in questa congiuntura anche per promuovere la posizione dell Italia in ambito internazionale. SPACE AND MOLECULES Mariano Bizzarri, is professor of pathology at the Department of Experimental Medicine, University La Sapienza (Rome), where he runs the Systems Biology Group ( He holds undergraduate courses in Boston (Mass., USA) and Tomsk (Russia). He s the Director of Systems Biology Laboratory and co-founder of the Italian Society for Space Biomedicine and Biochemistry ( He s a founding member of the Council for Genetic Rights (2002) and Vice President of the Italian Association of Metabolomics (Assimet). Since 2005 he is member of the Scientific Council of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and in 2011 became its President. He s also the director of the first Italian magazine dedicated to Space: Space Magazine ( and director of the MA in Biomedicine and Biotechnology Space. He s the author of a hundreth International publications and fifteen volumes in scientific and popular ones. He is actively engaged with other Italian and international centers, to propose a new theory carcinogenic, mainly focused on the tumor tissue as a disease, governed by nonlinear dynamics, their complex systems (Systems Biology Studies). In this last decade, research has aimed to the discovery of new anti-cancer compounds, extracted from the stem cells of fish and plants, developing two new patents. The clinical translation of this research has allowed us to achieve significant progress in treatment of tumors of the liver, pancreas, colon and breast cancer. As part of Biomedicine space is actively engaged in defining a general theory of the interaction between gravity and living systems, aimed to determine which genetic and biophysical alterations occur through space travel. Professor, what is the pivotal aim of the research conducted at the Systems Biology Lab, La Sapienza University? My lab, which includes a dozen of researchers and graduate students, has focused its activities mainly to the study of complex interactions that govern the life and differentiation of cells and tissues. The key concept is the fact that cancer does not originate from a cell isolated from its context, but from a fabric whose fate, even before the genes, is dictated by biochemical and biophysical factors that are conducted at the level of cross-talk between cells and their microenvironment (stroma). This has important practical implications, since it requires to shift the focus from single genes to the factors that regulate the cell- stroma. For this reason, in our laboratory we have focused on molecules "natural" (such as melatonin, extracts of grape seed and inositol), or of new drugs (such as those derived from stem cells of fish or chicken egg) capable of modulating total biophysics of cells and their interaction with the micro-environment. In this way we could get the block in cell culture replication of tumor, the increase of the processes that lead to the death of cancer cells and also the "conversion" of these cells normal. The significance of these studies show how important it is inserted at the level of "communication" that are established between the cells and tissue in order to direct the process, rather than focus on the "physical elimination " of the cell "sick", as do the chemo and radiotherapy. Some of these experimental studies have already been clinically tested with excellent results, which have enabled us to patent two new compounds: one from the Zebrafish and one formulated on the basis of extracts from egg white. Clinical applications (in addition to those already known for melatonin ) are also provided for inositol (which has proved useful for, interalia, encourage the process of fertility in women with polycystic ovary syndrome) and in extracts of grape seed (which showed a remarkable antitumor potency, giving reason to epidemiological always indicate how important it is to take 1 to 2 glasses of red wine per day). It is conceivable, considering the requirement of conventional treatments for a whole range of cancers, the development of these new treatments will work alongside the traditional ones in order to achieve greater opportunities for healing, especially in cases refractory to chemotherapy drugs. A second area of research concerns the changes induced by microgravity on the structure and function of cells and tissues. We are working to build a general theory that explains how biological structures respond to the biophysical constraints such as gravity is undoubtedly a significant factor that has helped shape the evolution on Earth. It is a fascinating subject, but that allows us to understand how any definition of life can not be separated by gravity: the complete absence of gravity makes it probably impossible to develop any form of life. Just these show that if there is a "spontaneous healing", it must necessarily be promoted by a mechanism that is able neuroimmunobiologico and can activate a complex series of cascade reactions that block and then kill the cancer cell. The question to be asked is the following: there is an "inner healer"? And if so, what is its organic substrate? What reactions are to be activated to be able to defeat a disease as complex and deadly as cancer? The answer to these questions-even with all the cautions and precautions - must certainly be seen as positive today. What programs carried out by the Italian Space Agency under the Biomedical and Biotechnology? The ASI has promoted since 2005 a program of studies designed to assess the impact of microgravity and radiation on life. The Pole will coordinate cutting-edge research in this field and at the same time to grow a new generation of young researchers. For this reason, La Sapienza University has very little to set up the first Master in Biomedicine and Biotechnology Space, entrusting the management to me. What is the relationship between ASI and Roma Capitale Investments Foundation? The ASI turns special attention to emerging technologies and considers it essential to support and structure the relationship between research organizations and SMEs, in order to promote research and technology transfer in this area. Since this objective is in some ways the "heart" of the objectives of the Foundation, it seemed only right to support it in this direction by providing Heller 's contribution to the Chairman of the Agency. I take this opportunity to stress how important it is that organizations such as the Foundation can fulfill the role of a catalyst, bringing together around a single table men of science, capital, institutions and businesses, large and small. Quali prospettive e opportunità nel medio-lungo termine vede nel campo dell energia? La prospettiva più interessante è indubbiamente quella relativa all efficienza energetica e all impiego di energie rinnovabili. In particolare, l efficienza energetica nel campo edilizio offre grandi opportunità per gli ampi margini di miglioramento che si possono ottenere. A titolo esemplificativo, le costruzioni degli anni 70 presentano consumi energetici tra 150 e 200 kwh/mq*anno mentre quelle attuali in classe A sono caratterizzate da consumi inferiori a 20 kwh/mq*anno. Particolarmente interessante è il caso degli edifici storici, di cui Roma Capitale è particolarmente ricca: in tale ambito, presso il CIRIAF, centro di ricerca dell Università degli Studi di Perugia, abbiamo messo a punto un sistema che, utilizzando pompe di calore e geometria a bassa entalpia, eventualmente alimentato con impianti fotovoltaici, permette di riscaldare e raffreddare gli edifici con un risparmio energetico del 50%. In tal modo, si evita l installazione di motocondensanti sulle facciate storiche o fori a vetri delle finestre, che creano un notevole impatto negativo sull estetica originale degli edifici. Su tali edifici, inoltre, un altro sistema, denominato monitor della consapevolezza, permette di risparmiare fino al 30% dei consumi energetici influenzando il comportamento personale e gestionale. Altri interventi per il miglioramento energetico degli edifici riguardano l impiego di nuovi materiali termoisolanti per edilizia e di componenti quali finestre e porte con elevate prestazioni di isolamento termico e acustico. Come salvaguardare l ambiente e creare opportunità di sviluppo? Parlando di ambiente, è necessario distinguere tra ambiente locale e su scala mondiale. Nel primo caso, le problematiche di inquinamento del suolo, trattamento e valorizzazione dei rifiuti, prevenzione dell inquinamento delle acque, riduzione delle emissioni in atmosfera sono tra le priorità da affrontare. Nel secondo caso, a livello mondiale, è prioritario il grave problema dei cambiamenti climatici, che si manifesta con eventi meteorologici estremi (uragani, bombe d acqua, innalzamento del livello medio dei mari) di sempre maggiore frequenza. Dalle crisi ambientali locali e globali possono nascere opportunità per trasformare il problema ambientale in un progetto di sviluppo che consenta di mitigare gli effetti dell inquinamento anche attraverso nuove e più avanzate tecnologie, superando anche l effetto Nimby. A titolo esemplificativo, che può eventualmente riguardare applicazioni anche per la città di Roma, per risolvere il problema della frazione organica dei rifiuti (FORSU) e produrre energia elettrica e calore per interi quartieri, con occupazione minima di suolo, nel gruppo di ricerca da me coordinato abbiamo ideato la Torre Energetica Ambientale Multifunzionale TEAM (di cui ho parlato ai media e anche a Radio24 nelle recenti trasmissioni del novembre 2013). Si tratta di una torre cilindrica verticale in cui è realizzato un digestore anaerobico che produce biogas da FORSU. Il biogas prodotto consente di alimentare un motore per la produzione di 300 kw di energia elettrica e 500 kw di energia termica, utilizzando FORSU prodotta da un quartiere di circa abitanti. Possono essere inoltre previsti sistemi di accumulo energetico costituiti da due serbatoi (termico e meccanico-miniidroelettrico) alla base ed alla sommità della torre stessa. Infine, sono previsti sistemi di monitoraggio ambientale, geometria a bassa entalpia nei pali di fondazione, impianti fotovoltaici. Per quanto riguarda la mitigazione del clima, il progetto albedo ( può costituire un valido sistema per mitigare nel breve periodo gli effetti dei cambiamenti climatici attraverso azioni locali che prevedano l installazione di superfici altamente riflettenti la radiazione solare. Quale ruolo può avere Roma Capitale Investments Foundation nelle problematiche energetico-ambientali? Indubbiamente, nessun progetto può essere realizzato senza un adeguato piano finanziario ed una puntuale analisi tecnico-economica che preveda ritorni in tempi certi. In questo ambito, la Fondazione può giocare un ruolo fondamentale, garantendo anche il reperimento delle risorse necessarie e rapidi tempi di realizzazione. The most interesting perspective is undoubtedly the one relating to the energy efficiency and use of renewable energy. In particular, the energy efficiency in the building sector offers great opportunities for wide margins of improvements that can be achieved. For example, the construction of the 70's show energy consumptions between 150 and 200 kwh / m² * year, instead those in the current class A are characterized by consumption of less than 20 kwh / m² * year. How to protect the environment and create opportunities for development? Speaking of environment, it is necessary to distinguish between local and global environment. In the first case, the problems of soil pollution, treatment and recovery of waste, prevention of water pollution, reduction of emissions into the atmosphere are among the priorities to be addressed. In the second case, at world level, it is a priority for the serious problem of climate change, which is exposed by extreme weather events (hurricanes, water bombs, rising for sea level) are increasing more and more. Local and global environmental crises can arise opportunity to transform the environmental problem in a development project that allows to mitigate the effects of pollution through new and more advanced technologies, overcoming the NIMBY effect. For example, it can possibly affects the applications for the city of Rome, to solve the problem of the organic fraction of the waste ( MSW ) and produce electricity and heat for whole neighborhoods, with a minimum occupancy of the soil, in the research group coordinated by me we designed the Tower Energy and Environment Multifunctional - TEAM (which I have spoken to media and also on Radio24 in a recent show on the November 2013). It is a vertical cylindrical tower in which is made an anaerobic digester that produces biogas from biowaste. The biogas produced can be fed from an engine to produce 300 kw of electricity and 500 kw of thermal energy, using biowaste produced by a neighborhood of about 15,000 inhabitants. May be further provided energy storage systems consisting of two tanks ( thermal and mechanical mini hydroelectrical) at the base and at the top of the tower itself. Finally, there are environmental monitoring systems, geometry low enthalpy in the foundation piles, photovoltaic systems. As for climate mitigation, the project albedo ( ) can be a good way to mitigate the short-term effects of climate change through local actions involving the installation of highly reflective surfaces solar radiation. Undoubtedly, no project can be accomplished without a proper financial plan and a detailed technical and economic analysis that includes results in certain timings. Gli elementi essenziali per il recupero e il mantenimento di competitività, elementi in grado di condizionare positivamente lo sviluppo, in un contesto globale, sono infatti la diffusione delle innovazioni tecnologiche e la crescita del capitale umano, entrambi necessari per sostenere e promuovere la crescita sostenibile nel medio-lungo periodo. Sul piano della pura terminologia, diverse sono le tipologie di innovazione, in base a definizioni ampiamente condivise a livello europeo. Innovazione può essere un prodotto nuovo o migliorato in modo non routinario, sia esso un bene o un servizio, introdotto sul mercato, ovvero l introduzione di un processo nuovo o anch esso migliorato in modo significativo. Innovazione ed invenzione non sono sinonimi, le innovazioni sono basate su nuove conoscenze, su nuove combinazioni di conoscenze/tecnologie esistenti e possono essere radicali oppure incrementali. Il concetto di innovazione è anche distinto da quello di ricerca e sviluppo, esplorativa o applicata che sia, pur essendo questo secondo concetto oggi divenuto essenziale per la sostenibilità dei processi innovativi e per la loro effettiva trasferibilità, in una società complessa dove internazionalizzazione e tecnologie abilitanti sono riconosciuti come driving force primaria. Il nostro Paese soffre, su questo versante, non per capacità di generare nuova conoscenza o individuare nuove soluzioni, ma per la ridotta propensione al trasferimento tecnologico. Ciò è legato a molti fattori tra i quali si può citare la peculiarità del tessuto industriale italiano, la non estesa collaborazione tra pubblico e privato, la difficoltà di accedere a specifiche forme finanziarie di supporto, la non adeguata qualità del capitale umano se confrontata con quella di altri Paesi Europei, la scarsa propensione all investimento privato in capitale di rischio, l eccessiva onerosità, temporale e cartacea, degli strumenti esistenti. Se da un lato viene spesso evocata la difficoltà di comunicazione tra impresa e mondo della ricerca e la percezione del mondo industriale che i costi di transazione siano troppo elevati, è altrettanto vero che sovente gli instaurati rapporti di collaborazione sono solo episodici, che la propensione al rischio del capitale privato è contenuta e che alcune crescenti rigidità del sistema pubblico contribuiscono a generare un freno non trascurabile. Il sistema può assumere il necessario carattere di proattività solo con il ricorso ad un approccio integrato, tanto più necessario quanto più la conoscenza multidisciplinare è fattore critico di successo, creando reti che consentono ai diversi attori istituzionali di fornire il loro sinergico contributo in base alle loro specifiche missioni e competenze, senza trascurare serie forme di incentivazione anche di natura fiscale. Solo così il connubio tra ricerca e sviluppo, innovazione e trasferimento tecnologico può innescare un indispensabile circolo virtuoso. Coniugando la fonte di conoscenza con le modalità con cui la conoscenza può raggiungere il mercato si possono sostenere azioni di innovazione di successo. Il trasferimento può essere realizzato verso imprese già esistenti oppure può avere come obiettivo quello della creazioni di nuove imprese (spin off, start up). In tale ambito è necessario evidenziare che i costi di valutazione del progetto, l elevato rischio e la potenziale incertezza sui ritorni dell investimento condizionano l accesso al credito e rendono necessario il ricorso a forme di finanziamento alternative a quelle tradizionali. Nello specifico, con diretto riferimento al finanziamento dell imprenditorialità, in Italia non sono affatto trascurabili le difficoltà generate dalla mancanza di adeguati fondi di cassa e di adeguati capitali di rischio da investire, soprattutto per quelle iniziative ad elevato contenuto di conoscenza/tecnologia le imprese spin off high-tech - che in fase incipiente non possono offrire, per loro intrinseca natura, adeguate garanzie. E altresì importante evidenziare l esistenza di diverse fasi dello sviluppo di una iniziativa spin off, fasi strettamente collegate allo sviluppo della tecnologia che ne costituisce il cosiddetto core business. In ognuna di queste fasi l impresa nascente ha di fronte problematiche diverse e diverse esigenze finanziarie. IN MODO SINTETICO: - il concepimento dell idea innovativa (seed) è la fase embrionale dell impresa in cui si valuta la fattibilità economica del progetto. E una fase ad alto rischio, ma ad impatto finanziario basso. ; - l avvio del processo innovativo (start up) è la fase associata alla realizzazione prototipale ed alla fase di studio del mercato, fase ad alto rischio con elevato impatto finanziario; - l espansione iniziale (early growth) è la fase di sviluppo in cui il prodotto è lanciato sul mercato, fase a rischio medio ma con alto impatto finanziario; - il consolidamento (sustained growth) è la fase matura dell attività innovativa, con rischio ed impatto finanziario bassi. Per il sostegno delle citate iniziative, escludendo le azioni seed, gli strumenti di private equity costituiscono una possibile soluzione finanziaria, con il ricorso ad un investitore privato per l apporto di capitali, sia esso formal oppure informal. Alla prima tipologia appartiene il venture capital, alla seconda il cosidetto angel finance. In questo quadro Roma Capitale Investement Foundation è stata costituita ed opera. The essential elements for the recovery and maintenance of competitiveness, which are capable of positively influencing the development in a global context, are in fact the diffusion of technological innovations and the growth of human capital, both needed to support and promote sustainable growth in the medium to long term. On the level of pure terminology, there are different types of innovation, based on definitions widely shared across Europe. In innovation can be a new or improved product in a non-routine, be it a good or a service, which was introduced on the market, or the introduction of a new process or also improved significantly. Innovation and invention are not synonymous, the innovations are based on new knowledge, new combinations of knowledge / technology exist and can be radical or incremental. The concept of innovation is also distinct from that of research and development, exploratory or applied it, although the latter concept has now become essential for the sustainability of innovative processes and for their effective transferability, in a complex society where internationalization and enabling technologies are recognized as the primary driving force. Our country suffers, on this side, not for the ability to generate new knowledge or new solutions, but for the low propensity for technology transfer. Questo per via delle tante battaglie e delle innumerevoli iniziative da noi intraprese a tutela degli utenti capitolini ma anche del bene pubblico. Avete portato avanti il ricorso al Tar del Lazio per i lavori di restauro del Colosseo. Il ricorso al Tar del Lazio relativo ai lavori di restauro del Colosseo, è stata un azione che alcuni hanno voluto vedere come un ostacolo al rinnovo del monumento, ma che in realtà era tesa a tutelare un bene comune come l Anfiteatro Flavio, garantendo la massima trasparenza dell intera operazione. Qual è stata l iniziativa del Codacons che ha apportato maggiori benefici ai cittadini romani? Probabilmente è stata quella sulle strisce blu, quando grazie ad un nostro ricorso l amministrazione capitolina fu costretta dapprima a rendere gratuiti tutti i parcheggi in città, e poi a rimodulare i posteggi a pagamento incrementando quelli gratis e ristabilendo la legalità nelle strisce blu. Il nostro rapporto con il Comune di Roma è stato sempre di fattiva collaborazione conservando però la libertà di criticare, anche ferocemente, le scelte dell amministrazione. Ad esempio abbiamo attaccato Alemanno (ex sindaco si Roma ndr)sul fronte delle Olimpiadi nella capitale ma al tempo stesso abbiamo avviato con la sua giunta un progetto per rispondere alle istanze degli utenti in tema di controversie con le società municipalizzate. E speriamo che anche con il Sindaco Ignazio Marino possa instaurarsi un rapporto analogo, dove l amministrazione tenga conto delle nostre denunce e delle nostre critiche, senza per questo creare conflitti o antipatie che certo non apportano alcun contributo ai cittadini. Cosa c è ai vertici delle vostre preoccupazioni? I trasporti; troppe le segnalazioni che quotidianamente riceviamo da chi a Roma si sposta con i mezzi pubblici o dai pendolari che utilizzano i treni regionali per recarsi a scuola o a lavoro. Per non parlare di chi è costretto a usare la macchina e, a causa del traffico, deve sprecare parte della propria vita in automobile in fila sulle strade. Roma va totalmente ripensata sul piano dei trasporti, prima potenziando quelli pubblici e poi incentivandone l uso, anche attraverso una riduzione delle tariffe per fasce orarie. Sergio Donadoni, decano degli egittologi italiani, famoso in ambito internazionale. Attualmente è Ricercatore del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche presso l Istituto di Studi sul Mediterraneo Antico. Nonostante le attuali difficoltà economiche nelle quali il nostro paese si dibatte, grazie all entusiasmo e alla dedizione di tanti colleghi, al CNR è possibile portare avanti ricerche interdisciplinari, nelle quali si intrecciano competenze diverse, per arrivare a risultati innovativi. Attualmente, ad esempio, stiamo presentando i risultati di un progetto riguardante le calamità naturali nell antico Egitto. Iscrizioni geroglifiche e archeologia possono fornire dati alla conoscenza dei cambiamenti climatici e dei disastri ambientali. Egittologi, geologi, climatologi hanno lavorato ad una ricerca interdisciplinare per la conoscenza degli eventi estremi. Nel Giuseppina Capriotti gruppo, alcuni esperti di telerilevamento satellitare stanno applicando tecnologie avanzate alla ricerca di aspetti geomorfologici, antichi percorsi nel deserto, strutture nascoste sotto la sabbia. Dal 15 al 18 novembre 2013, su questi argomenti, abbiamo organizzato un workshop in Egitto, nella magnifica cornice di Aswan, al quale hanno partecipato numerosi colleghi egiziani e italiani in un confronto teso a collaborazioni future. È stato il primo evento internazionale organizzato in Egitto dopo la rivoluzione di luglio ed è stato UN EGITTOLOGA AL CNR Ricerche su una civiltà antichissima, tecnologie avanzate e cooperazione internazionale Intervista a Giuseppina Capriotti Vittozzi di Rosa Fiore / traduzioni Michael Cardarelli possibile grazie alla piena collaborazione con l Ufficio dell Addetto Scientifico dell Ambasciata d Italia al Cairo, prof. Francesco Porcelli. Il nostro lavoro, finalizzato alla ricerca scientifica, ha in realtà dei risvolti molto interessanti per quanto concerne la cooperazione internazionale, l incontro tra culture, le relazioni tra paesi. In tal senso, l appoggio del CNR attraverso l Ufficio Accordi e Relazioni Internazionali è veramente prezioso. L interesse per l incontro tra culture ed esperienze diverse è una costante nel mio lavoro, e non solo nell attualità. Nella mia linea di ricerca, infatti, uno dei temi importanti è la presenza della cultura egizia a Roma antica. In questa magnifica città, nell antichità, furono presenti artisti e specialisti egizi, alcuni imperatori si fecero rappresentare come faraoni e fecero realizzare iscrizioni geroglifiche: non dimentichiamo che oggi la Città Eterna possiede più obelischi innalzati dell intero Egitto, perfettamente inseriti nel tessuto urbano grazie alla loro valorizzazione e collocazione in età moderna, in seguito all innalzamento di epoca imperiale. Roma fu in qualche modo, allora, una nuova Menfi, una proiezione dell antichissima e favolosa capitale egizia: qui la ricerca dell antica sapienza egizia si intrecciò a tensioni spirituali verso nuove forme religiose e alle pretese faraoniche di alcuni imperatori. Proprio di recente, è stato pubblicato un mio libro intitolato La Terra del Nilo sulle sponde del Tevere, che offre una chiave di lettura per questo fenomeno. Confesso che raccontare il mio lavoro, comunicare i miei studi, mi appassiona, ed è per questo che ho accettato, in questo anno accademico, di insegnare Egittologia alla Sapienza Università di Roma, nell ambito di accordi di collaborazione tra CNR e Sapienza, perché trasmettere ai giovani quanto siamo riusciti a comprendere del passato è un dovere, perché rendere consapevoli le nuove generazioni del lavorio umano nei secoli, delle conquiste più alte ma anche delle possibili scelte distruttive, serve a costruire un sentiero di speranza verso il futuro. AN EGYPTOLOGIST AT THE CNR He began the long journey of training in Egyptology at the school of prof. Sergio Donadoni, dean of Italian Egyptologists, famous in the international arena. Currently he is a researcher of the National Research Council at the Institute of Studies on Ancient Mediterranean. Despite the current economic difficulties in which our country is struggling, thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of many colleagues, at the CNR is possible to carry out interdisciplinary research in which different skills are intertwined, to arrive at innovative results. Currently, for example, we are presenting the results of a project on natural disasters in ancient Egypt. Hieroglyphic inscriptions and archeology can provide data to the knowledge of climate change and environmental disasters. Egyptologists, geologists, climatologists have worked on an interdisciplinary research for the understanding of extreme events. In the group, some experts satellite remote sensing are applying advanced technology in search of geomorphological, ancient routes in the desert, structures hidden under the sand. From November 15 to 18, 2013, on these topics, we organized a workshop in Egypt, in the magnificent setting of Aswan, which was attended by numerous Italian and Egyptian colleagues in a tense confrontation in future collaborations. It was the first international event organized in Egypt after the revolution of July and it was possible thanks to the full cooperation with the Office of the Scientific Attaché of the Embassy of Italy in Cairo, prof. Francesco Porcelli. Our work aimed at the scientific research, it actually has very interesting implications with regard to international cooperation, the meeting of cultures, relations between countries. In this sense, the support of the National Research Council through the Office of Agreements and International Relations is really valuable. The interest in the encounter between different cultures and experiences is a constant in my work, and not just in actuality. In my line of research, in fact, one of the important issues is the presence of Egyptian culture in ancient Rome. In this magnificent city, in antiquity, Egyptians were present artists and specialists, some emperors became represented as pharaohs and did realize hieroglyphic inscriptions : do not forget today that the Eternal City has more obelisks of Egypt, raised, perfectly integrated into the urban fabric thanks to their promotion and placement in the modern age, following the raising of the imperial era. Rome was in some way, then, a new Memphis, a projection of the ancient Egyptian capital and fabulous : here the research of the ancient Egyptian wisdom intertwined with spiritual tensions towards new forms of religion and the claims of some monumental emperors. Just recently, it was published my book called" The Land of the Nile on the banks of the Tiber," which offers a key to understanding this phenomenon. I confess that I talk about my work, communicate my studies, I am passionate about, and that is why I accepted in this academic year to teach Egyptology at the Sapienza University of Rome, in the framework of cooperation agreements between CNR and Wisdom, because convey to young people as we were able to understand the past is a duty, because the younger generation make you aware of the workings of the human over the centuries, but also the highest achievements of the possible destructive choices, you need to build a path of hope for the future. ph: Foto di Andrea Angelini e Michele D. 14 IMPRENDITORI / ENTREPRENEUR LA MIA OPERA MIGLIORE Colloquio con il costruttore Romolo Appolloni, romano de Roma doc.. di Mario De Santis / traduzione Michael Cardarelli Nel soggiorno pieno di luce, nella sua bella casa nei Castelli romani, Romolo Appolloni, 77 anni, tuttora ben portati, malgrado qualche acciacco, mi sorride anche con lo sguardo, mentre lo invito ad una sorta di estemporaneo esame della situazione relativa al difficile momento economico che le famiglie e le Imprese attraversano oggi nel nostro paese. Il mio sogno, purtroppo incompiuto, sarebbe stato quello di vedere intorno a me, a questo punto della mia vita, un mondo con meno diseguaglianze e molto più attento a riconoscere i meriti di chi opera e lavora, ed anche di chi mettendosi senza esitazioni ripetutamente in gioco, crea opportunità di benessere per tutti. Purtroppo questo non accade più e non mi nascondo una grande preoccupazione tutte le volte che penso al futuro che ci attende, soprattutto per i tanti giovani che oggi sono alla disperata ricerca di una occupazione, in un contesto sempre più avaro di offerte, anche per le ragioni di cui dirò fra poco. Così Romolo Appolloni, erede di tre generazioni di costruttori, inizia il nostro colloquio, dedicato ad una informale analisi, sicuramente vissuta anche in prima persona, della situazione che affligge il nostro Paese, dedicando, con la sua profonda esperienza sul campo, più puntuali riferimenti al mondo delle costruzioni civili e dell indotto ad esso sottostante. Posso ben dire oggi di affidare ai miei figli un Gruppo di Imprese, non più solo operanti nell ambito delle costruzioni civili, la cui odierna dimensione è il frutto di quasi cento anni di lavoro e di sacrifici miei, oltre che loro e di chi ci ha preceduto. Abbiamo generato, in questo lungo percorso di vita e di lavoro, benessere ed opportunità di crescita, creando anche una immagine complessiva di una Azienda che ha avuto sempre, come priorità assoluta, il rispetto degli impegni presi. Anche nei tanti momenti difficili che talvolta ci è toccato attraversare, non abbiamo mai scelto scorciatoie di comodo, ma abbiamo sempre privilegiato il mantenimento della parola data verso tutti i nostri innumerevoli interlocutori, siano essi stati Clienti o Fornitori a vario titolo, avendo anche il conforto sempre nella stessa comune visione, anche etica, dell essere Impresa dei miei Figli e di tutti i miei preziosi Collaboratori. Vorrei aggiungere, a tale riguardo e senza false modestie, che coltivo la ragionevole consapevolezza di essere così riuscito a contribuire, anno per anno, a qualche centesimo di punto del nostro PIL nazionale, il che, mi creda, non è certamente alla portata di molti imprenditori. Ma quello che vedo e sento oggi, e lo dico con molta amarezza, - prosegue Romolo Appolloni è che molto del nostro lavoro è divenuto un lavoro di contenimento, non più quindi un lavoro propositivo e catalizzatore di importanti ricadute economiche sul territorio, ma piuttosto un incerto e difficoltoso incedere fra i famosi lacci e laccioli, proprio come il compianto Guido Carli, prestigioso Governatore di Bankitalia prima ed importante Presidente di Confindustria, poi, amava definire tutto l imponente, ed alle volte insormontabile, apparato burocratico ed amministrativo della nostra repubblica. Al di là delle difficoltà contingenti, che sono, come visto, sicuramente tante, per non dire troppe, accade che la maggior parte delle nostre risorse vada spesa per non farci definitivamente annientare da una fiscalità predatoria e da una burocrazia del tutto autoreferenziale ed inetta. Non nascondo che quest anno faremo davvero fatica a pagare tutti gli innumerevoli balzelli che oggi gravano sulle imprese edili e sui loro asset, collateralmente aggrediti anche da una drammatica proliferazione di obblighi cartolari invero indegni di un Paese che si auto qualifica in termini di PIL, settima/ottava Nazione del mondo. A questo riguardo, vorrei citare un solo esempio, certamente illuminante, nel settore che mi è più vicino. Oggi, a Roma, per un area che il PRG destina alla edificazione, sono necessari se tutto va bene - non meno di dieci anni per ritirare materialmente il Permesso di Costruire. All interno di questi due lustri, occorre sottostare quasi ad una moderna rivisitazione della mitica Odissea, in un ininterrotto trionfo di carte, pareri, commissioni e sottocommissioni e balzelli vari, come ogni mio più illustre o meno illustre Collega ben sa, per averlo sperimentato sulla propria pelle e nelle proprie tasche. Cosa, allora, ci fa stare ancora sulla breccia, malgrado tutto questo remare contro??? A questo suo interrogativo, certamente non retorico, Romolo Appolloni, fa seguire questa lucida risposta. Forse, o senza forse, il sentimento prima di tutto. Quell ideale legame, cioè, di affetti che il nostro cuore antico sa ancora riconoscere ed apprezzare e che ci trattiene ancora nel borgo natio, dove le persone e le cose che abbiamo conosciuto ed amato sono divenute parte integrante di noi stessi. E poi la passione, quella intima passione per ogni lavoro ben fatto, e che ci ha accompagnato tutta una vita. Ma, lo affermo molto sommessamente e con la giusta consapevolezza, non sarà sempre così. I giovani, i tanti giovani di oggi, sono delusi ed amareggiati dalla situazione senza sbocchi che li circonda ed i migliori fra loro non esitano, o non esiteranno a breve, a cercare altrove le fortune che essi sentono di meritare. Ed è un peccato, un vero peccato per la nostra nazione assistere a questo quotidiano, inutile e beffardo dibattito che attanaglia la nostra classe dirigente, peraltro da noi stessi scelta. Un Governo che non riforma, non decide, non mantiene ciò che promette, con pari demerito è giusto precisarlo fra Destra e Sinistra, non può quindi apparire come il risolutore dei tanti problemi sul tappeto, offrendo concrete prospettive di recupero e di ripresa soprattutto ai giovani ed al Paese. Eppure ci vorrebbe poco per riprendere una rotta virtuosa. Vorrei a questo punto ragionare da buon padre di famiglia, senza invenzioni fantasmagoriche, ma con un occhio vigile sulla spesa, su quella che oggi tutti chiamano spending review. Orbene, se una famiglia normale in un periodo di difficoltà può riuscire a sopravvivere ancora dignitosamente con un taglio del 10% delle proprie spese correnti e di mantenimento, perché non può accadere lo stesso per la ben più grande famiglia delle nostre Amministrazioni Comunali, Provinciali, Regionali e, per finire, dello Stato?? Potrei fare più di un esempio concreto in tal senso, ma almeno in questa sede non vorrei innescare inopportune polemiche. Ognuno fra noi sa ben vedere che questa e non altra, è la via di uscita dal nostro ingombrante debito pubblico, il cui peso, inesorabilmente, schiaccia le generazioni future e sottrae preziose risorse a quelle presenti. Ogni imprenditore dovrebbe quasi per definizione essere un inguaribile ottimista, a meno di essere in palese contraddizione di termini con il ruolo che si è dato. Anche io desidero essere ottimista, ma questo mio atteggiamento non può essere disgiunto da una sana impronta di ragionevolezza cui ispirarsi nelle varie circostanze di vita e del quotidiano operare. Allora, bisogna partire proprio dalla ragione che mai dovrebbe abbandonarci e fare in modo che ciascuno di noi, ad iniziare da coloro che hanno responsabilità di governo, si ispiri a modelli di sviluppo e di crescita che siano sostenibili, ma soprattutto siano prioritariamente utili alle persone ed ai loro territori. Il tempo delle tante cattedrali nel deserto è definitivamente tramontato e con esso le tante avide clientele cui sono state dispensate, nel corso degli anni ed a piene mani, enormi risorse finanziarie, per lo più rimaste, specie nel Sud del nostro Paese, assurde testimonianze di altrettanti ingiustificabili sprechi. Oggi, bisogna mettere un punto a tutto ciò ed andare a capo. Dal mio punto di vista, il Gruppo di Imprese che fa riferimento alla mia famiglia e che guido da cinquanta anni, non si sottrarrà agli stringenti paradigmi che i nuovi scenari macroeconomici e sociali proiettano sulla Europa intera, Germania compresa. Le Imprese e la Politica devono quindi adottare un condiviso modello di sviluppo, a patto però che esso sia compatibile con le risorse disponibili ovvero come si diceva una volta che proporzioni il proprio passo alla lunghezza della gamba. Nel chiudere queste note mi sovviene alla memoria il bellissimo sigillo del Presidente degli Stati Uniti d America, che sin dal 1776 porta inciso E pluribus unum. E se la più grande potenza mondiale, ( forse però non ancora per molto, chissà.. ), fa della unione solidale di tutti i suoi cittadini, delle contee e degli stati, la sua forza, un motivo ci sarà, e questo vale anche per noi e per la nostra cara e vecchia Europa : o ci salviamo tutti o nessuno. Infine, sempre per pensare positivo, vorrei rivolgere a quei giovani Lettori, ( ma anche ai meno giovani fra loro), che hanno avuto la benevolenza di seguirmi sin qui, l invito a non abbandonarsi, pur nello scoramento e nella difficoltà delle avverse situazioni economiche, alle lusinghe di quelle sirene il cui canto incita alla fuga in avanti, abbandonando così la partita. A loro dico, la vostra Italia, la nostra Italia, è ancora un grande Paese. Ha solo bisogno di una adeguata ristrutturazione che comporti una rinnovata efficienza amministrativa, gestita da una nuova, qualificata classe dirigente che abbia il coraggio di riformare ed innovare ovunque ciò sia necessario, eliminando qualsiasi tipo di rendita di posizione e di vetero parassitismo. Sarà un compito difficile. Richiederà passione, competenza, onestà intellettuale e tanto, tanto lavoro. Tutte queste categorie dello spirito umano, che in tutta onestà sento profondamente appartenermi, ho cercato di trasmetterle in tutti questi anni, tanti, ma oramai volati via, ai miei Figli ed ai miei Collaboratori. Posso oggi confermare che ne sono stato ampiamente ripagato. Considero questo risultato, ben al di là dei tanti milioni di metri cubi che in questo mezzo secolo ho edificato, la vera ed autentica opera che mi è meglio riuscita, e che mi piace qui ricordare con legittimo orgoglio per quel che resta del mio giorno. A tutti Voi la mia profonda gratitudine. My dream, unfortunately uncompleted, was to see around me, at this point in my life, a world with less inequalities and much more cares for those who reckon the merits of those who work hard, and even of those who with no hesitation, putting themselves on the line, creating opportunities and prosperity for everybody. Unfortunately this does not longer happen and I do not hide a big concern every time I think about the future that awaits us, especially for the many young people today who are desperate for a job, in a background increasingly of more stingy offers, even for the reasons which will tell soon. So Romolo Appolloni, the heir of three generations of builders, begins our interview, dedicated to a casual analysis, certainly lived on his own of the situation that plagues our country, paying with his deep experience in the field, the more precise references to the world of civil construction industries and below it. I entrust my children today a group of companies, not just the most active in the field of civil construction, whose size is today the result of nearly a hundred years of our work and sacrifice, as well as their own and those who preceded us. We generated in this long journey of life and work, welfare and opportunities for growth, and also creating an overall image of a company that has always had, as an absolute priority, respect for commitments. Even in many hard times that sometimes we had to go through, we never chose easy shortcuts, but we have always favored the retention of the word to all of our many stakeholders, whether they were customers or suppliers were in various capacities, having also the comfort - in the same common vision, even ethics, company being - of my children and all my precious collaborators I would like to add, in this respect, and without false modesty, I grew a reasonable knowledge of being able to contribute as well, year after year, a few hundredths of a point in our national GDP, which, believe me, is certainly not within the reach of many entrepreneurs But what I see and feel today, and I say this with great bitterness, - says Romolo Appolloni - and that much of our work and become a work of containment, not more then a job and proactive catalyst for significant economic impact on the region, but rather a difficult and uncertain gait between the famous laces, as the late Guido Carli, Governor of the Bank of Italy prestigious and important first President of Confindustria, then, liked to call all impressive, and sometimes insurmountable bureaucratic and administrative of our Republic. Beyond the difficulty of quotas, which are, as we have seen, certainly many, not to say too much, it happens that the majority of our resources go shopping for us not to permanently wipe from predatory taxation and a completely self-referential and inept bureaucracy. I do not deny that this year we will really struggle to pay all the innumerable imposts which today weigh on construction companies and their assets, even collaterally attacked by a dramatic proliferation of obligations cartularies indeed unworthy of a country that is self considers in terms of GDP, seventh / eighth country in the world. In this regard, I would like to cite just one example, certainly enlightening, in the area that is closer to me. Today, in Rome, in an area that the PRG destination to the building are required - if all goes well - not less than ten years to withdraw materially the Building Permit. Within these two decades, it is necessary to undergo almost a modern revisitation of the legendary Odyssey, in an uninterrupted triumph of papers, opinions, various committees and subcommittees and levies, as every one of my more or less illustrious illustrious Connects know, having experienced it on their skin and in their pockets. What, then, makes us feel still going strong, in spite of all this work against? At this his question, certainly not rhetorical, Romolo Appolloni, does follow this lucid response. And then the passion, the intimate passion for the job well done, and it took us a lifetime. But, I say this very quietly and with the right knowledge, it will not be always so. Young people, many young people today, they are disappointed and saddened by the landlocked situation that surrounds them and the best of them do not hesitate, or they will not hesitate in short, to look elsewhere for the fortunes that they feel they deserve. And it 's a shame, a real shame for our nation to witness this daily, useless and mocking debate that is gripping our ruling class, however, by ourselves choice. A government that does not reform, has not decided, does not keep what it promises, with equal demerit - and down - I'm clearly stated - between the Right and Left, then it can not appear as the solver of the many issues on the table, offering real prospects of recovery and recovery, especially to young people and to the country. Yet it would take little to take a course of virtue. I would think at this point as a good father of a family, without phantasmagoric inventions, but with a watchful eye on spending, on what is now everyone calls spending review. However, if a normal family - in a period of difficulty - may still be able to survive with dignity with a cut of 10% of its running costs and maintenance, why can not the same happen for the very largest family of our municipalities, provincial, Regional and, finally, the Government? I could make more of a concrete example in this regard, but at least here I would not trigger undue controversy. Every one of us knows how to do this and nothing else, and the way out of our unwieldy public debt, the weight of which, surely, crushes future generations and subtracts valuable resources to those present. Every entrepreneur should - almost by definition - be a hopeless optimist, unless you are in blatant contradiction of terms with the role that you and given. Also I would like to be optimistic, but this attitude can not be separated from a healthy impression of reasonableness for inspiration in the various circumstances of life and daily functioning. So, you have to start right from the reason that it should never abandon us and make sure that each one of us, starting with those who have the responsibility of government, are reflected in patterns of growth and development that are sustainable, but especially useful primarily to people and within their territories. The time of the many cathedrals in the desert and definitely gone and with it the many avid clientele which were dispensed, over the years, and with both hands, enormous financial resources, mostly remained, especially in the South of our country, absurd testimonials many unjustifiable waste. Today, you have to put a point to everything and go to the head. From my point of view, the Group of Companies, which refers to my family and I drive past fifty years, will not shirk the strict paradigms that the new macroeconomic and social project on the whole of Europe, including Germany. Enterprise and the policy should be adopted for a shared development model, provided, however, that it is compatible with the resources available, or - as we used to say - that the proportions right step to the length of the leg. In closing these notes to the memory I remember the beautiful seal of the President of the United States of America, which since 1776 is engraved with E pluribus unum. And if the greatest power in the world, ( but perhaps not for much longer, who knows...), is supportive of the union of all its citizens, counties and states, its strength, there is a reason, and this is also true for us and for our dear old Europe: either we save all or none. In the end, I always think positive, I would like to ask those young players, (but also the less young among them), who had the kindness to follow me right here, do not call to surrender, despite the discouragement and difficulties of the adverse situations economic, to the lure of the sirens whose song incites forward flight, thus abandoning the game. To them I say, your Italy, our Italy, and still a great country. She just needs a proper restructuring that involves a renewed administrative efficiency, managed by a new, qualified leaders who have the courage to reform and innovate wherever this is required, eliminating any kind of advantageous position and the Old parasitism. It will be a difficult task. Will require passion, expertise, intellectual honesty and lots of work. All these categories of the human spirit, I feel deeply belong to me, I tried to send it in all these years, so many, but now flown away, my children and my co-workers. I can now confirm that I have been amply repaid. I consider this result, well the many millions of cubic meters in half a century that I have built, the true and authentic work that I and most successful, and I would like to mention with legitimate pride in what remains of my day. 16 ARTE / ART 28 MODERNI SIGNIFICATI DI GEOMETRIA NELL ARTE ISLAMICA Artista profondamente radicato nella pittura del cosiddetto razionalismo astratto vive e lavora a Bassano del Grappa in provincia di Vicenza. Ha studiato a Venezia e Padova per proseguire in Europa e negli USA. Ha ottenuto importanti pubblicazioni nazionali ed internazionali. Molte università italiane e straniere si sono interessate alla sua esperienza estetica, alle sue scoperte visivamente importanti per la cultura islamica. Credo di poter mostrare come la mia esperienza estetica possa essere compresa nelle sue coordinate formali in una storicita artistica derivabile da quella stagione dell astrattismo geometrico europeo chiamata neo-plasticismo. Ecco la mia tesi di filosofia estetica sulla geometria e l arte islamica. Vengono mostrate dalla mia pittura, delle convergenze formali tra le eredita del pensiero visivo della cultura Intervista al pittore Attilio Taverna di Maria Maranzana / traduzione Michael Cardarelli islamica ( crystals and quasi -crystals forms ) ed alcune strutture formali della fisico-geometria- matematica moderna circa la natura formale della luce-energia. In questa prospettiva allora, la mia pittura sarebbe un documento visivo estremamente significante e legittimamente sovrapponibile tra la cultura visiva islamica e la cultura visiva europea. Conduco da più di trent' anni un'esperienza estetica (pittura) che interroga la natura formale della luce-energia partendo dal punto di vista della conoscenza della fisica quantistica sulla radiazione che chiamiamo luce. Qualche anno fa mi sono accorto che la cultura sufi era profondamente intrisa di intuizioni formali straordinarie circa la natura formale della luce stessa. Che era esattamente ciò che da sempre esteticamente ed artisticamente - andavo cercando. Soltanto che lo avevo sempre fatto - e lo dovevo rigorosamente fare proprio cosi - a partire da ciò che la scienza moderna ( fisica quantistica ) conosceva sulla natura formale della luceenergia. Ma ecco improvvisamente venire in primo piano delle chiare ed impensabili assonanze, delle convergenze stupefacenti, delle analogie visive abissali proprio con le intuizioni della metafisica della luce islamica sufi : Ghazali in primis. Ho studiato allora i libri di Henry Corbin ( il celebre filosofo francese della Sorbona specialista della visione sufi ) ma debbo anche dire che mi ha sorpreso moltissimo il libro " Miskhat al anwar " di Ghazali, Abou Hamid. Quali sono queste stupefacenti convergenze sulla metafisica della luce islamica e la fisico-matematica moderna sulla natura formale della luce-energia. Ghazali teorizza l esistenza di un ultima luce possibile e sensibile come crystal-vision prima dell'aprirsi delle luci soltanto intelligibili nella via che l uomo deve percorrere per avvicinarsi alla divinità. Luci dunque, queste ultime, quelle intelligibili, perciò stesso invisibili. Dunque l ultima visione e immagine della luce sensibile e possibile all uomo è una declinazione cristallina: crystal vision. Tutto ciò debbo dire mi ha sorpreso moltissimo. Rimanendo all'interno del paradigma scientifico, la fisica quantistica per la natura formale della luce-energia aveva già elaborato un modello " wave-particlemath-model " (il quale però aveva avuto la conferma scientifica definitiva soltanto nel 1961! ). Il quale modello matematico - se sviluppato esteticamente e visivamente - conduceva di necessità logica a delle immagini visibili e comprensibili come declinazioni delle luci cristalline che erano vicinissime alla visione di cui parlava Ghazali, Abou Hamid dieci secoli prima. Se a tutto ciò aggiungiamo che sono proprio queste declinazioni della luce cristallina che creano lo spazio-tempo...allora si comprenderà bene come si possa essere stupefatti dalla intuizione di Ghazali sulla natura formale della luce-energia come " crystal-vision". Pensando concettualmente alla luce come " divine guidance" ( Huda ) Ghazali dice che l'ultima immagine di essa come possibilità sensibile e visibile dell'uomo è quella dell'immagine della luce cristallina...qui significa che con questa immagine siamo sul bordo ultimo della percezione. umana... e poi scopriamo che scientificamente lo stesso bordo ultimo della luce ( come lo conosce la fisica quantistica ) possiede la stessa immagine limite...ossia luce come declinazione visiva cristallina allora tutto ciò diventa abbastanza sorprendente. Attorno al quindicesimo secolo apparvero delle decorazioni sugli edifici religiosi islamici appartenenti ad uno stile geometrico-astratto oggi ben conosciuto e chiamato "quasi crystals"..quello che è altrettanto sorprendente è che alcuni esempi di quello stile decorativo "quasi.crystals" mostravano sì le dinamiche del movimento dei solidi platonici come movimento del cristallo - ma all'interno di queste dinamiche geometrico formali cristalline faceva la sua apparizione per la prima volta nella storia dell'umanità un movimento formale del cristallo come dotato di interna " rottura di simmetria ". La scoperta fu del fisico-matematico britannico Roger Penrose e avvenne attorno agli anni 80 del secolo scorso, anche se venne ripresa recentemente e divulgata nei media da due studiosi della Princeton University. Quindi 500 anni prima del 1980 l arte visiva islamica aveva trovato delle forme geometriche che mostravano una concezione del cristallo che poteva ripetersi in maniera non periodica, ossia ripetersi come un divenire formale sempre nuovo e originale perché quella forma cristallina possedeva al suo interno la capacità intrinseca di rottura di simmetria? Si. La cosa immensamente interessante della formulazione visiva e geometrico-matematica della forma del cristallo a-periodico ossia cristallo dotato di intrinseca rottura di simmetria, è che essa si rivelò progressivamente importantissima per moltissime discipline scientifiche moderne, e come ricordato, venne riconosciuta dalla matematica occidentale soltanto nel 1980! Queste dinamiche formali geometriche del cristallo dotato di " rottura di simmetria " furono appunto chiamate proprio per questo quasi.crystals..". ( quasi cristalli )! E tutto ciò che attinenza ha con la sua pittura? Tutta la mia esperienza estetica, la mia pittura, degli ultimi vent'anni è stata totalmente costruita sui concetti visivo-formali come quelli dei " crystals and quasi.crystals vision, e sui concetti di trasparenza percettiva e rottura di simmetria ", partendo da studi legati alla filosofia estetica. Mi chiedo e chiedo: questa convergenza visivo culturale che appare oggi con la mia esperienza estetica tra la cultura visiva razionalista europea e quella visiva non potrebbe essere un gigantesco dono che oggi la cultura italiana potrebbe fare alla cultura visiva dell intero Islam? E dono, questo, gravido di conseguenze forse decisive per la cultura visiva islamica in quanto apporto culturale e artistico in grado di condurre immediatamente la cultura visiva islamica all interno della più scottante modernità scientifica. MODERN MEANINGS OF GEOMETRY IN THE ISLA- MIC ART Deeply-rooted artist in the painting of the so-called abstract rationalism lives and works in Bassano del Grappa, Vicenza Province. He studied in Venice and Padua and then in Europe and the USA. He has obtained important national and international publishings. Many Italian and foreign Universities were interested to his aesthetic experiences, and visually important discoveries for the Islamic culture. I believe to be able to show how my aesthetic experience can be comprised in its formal coordinates in a artistic historicity coming from that season of the European geometric abstractionism called new-plasticism. Here comes my thesis of aesthetic philosophy on geometry and the Islamic art. They are shown by my painting, some formal convergences between the inheritances of the visual thought of the Islamic culture (crystals and almost - crystals forms) and some formal structures of modern mathematical physicist-geometry about the formal nature of the energy- light. In this perspective then, my painting would be a visual document extremely significant overlays among the Islamic and European visual culture. I lead for more than thirty years an aesthe- 29

Few years ago I noticed that the sufi culture was deeply soaked of extraordinary formal intuitions about the formal nature of light itself. That was exactly what always aesthetically and artistic - I was looking for. Only that I had always did it - and I had rigorously make that way - starting from what modern science (quantum physics) knew already on the formal nature of the energy- light. But suddenly here it comes to the fore some clear and unthinkable assonances, some amazing convergences, some abysmal visual analogies own with the intuitions of the metaphysics of the Islamic light sufi : Ghazali firstly. I have studied then the books of Henry Corbin (the famous French philosopher, specialist of the sufi vision at Sorbona University) but I must also say that the book Miskhat al anwar of Ghazali, Abou Hamid, has surprised me so much. What are these amazing convergences on the Islamic light metaphysics and the modern physicist-mathematics on the formal nature of the energy- light. Ghazali conjectures the existence of a last possible and sensitive light like crystal-vision before the opening of the only intelligible lights in a way that the man must cover in order to approach himself the divinity. Lights thus, the latter ones, those intelligible, therefore invisible. Afterwards the last vision and image of the sensitive and possible light to the man is a crystalline declination: crystal vision. All of this I must say has surprised me so much. staying inside the scientific paradigm, the quantum physics for what concern the formal nature of the energy- light was already issued a model wave-particle- math-model (which had a definitive scientific approval only in 1961! ). That mathematical model - if developed aesthetically and visually - would lead, on logical necessity, to the visible and comprehensible images like declinations of the crystalline lights that were close to the vision of Ghazali Abou Hamid uttered ten centuries before. If, to all of this, we add that these declinations of the crystalline light create the space-time.then it will be comprised well how it can be dumbfound by the intuition of Ghazali on the formal nature of the energy- light like crystal-vision. Thinking conceptually to light as divine guidance (Huda) Ghazali says that the last image of it as a sensitive and visible possibility of the man that is of that image of the crystalline light here means that, with this image, we are on the last edge of human perception... and then we discover that, scientifically, the same last edge of the light (as known by the quantum physics) has the same limit-image... or rather, as crystalline visual declination then everything becomes enough unexpected. Around the fifteenth century appeared some decorations on the Islamic religious buildings pertaining to a geometric-separate style nowadays very known and called almost-crystals. What is equally amazing is that some examples of that decorative style almost-crystals would show indeed the dynamics of the movement of platonic solids as the movement of the crystal - but inside these crystalline formal geometric dynamics would make its first apparition in the history of humanity a formal movement of crystal equipped like an internal symmetry breach. The discovery was made by a British physicist-mathematician Roger Penrose around the 80 s of the last century, even if was resumed recently and published on media by two students of Princeton University. Then 500 years before 1980 the Islamic visual art had found already geometric forms that showed a conception of crystal that could be repeated in non periodic way, or rather to repeat itself as formal becoming always brand new and original because that crystalline shape had inside the intrinsic ability of symmetry breach? Yes. The immensely interesting thing about the visual formulation and geometricmathematics of the shape of the aperiodic crystal that is endowed crystal of intrinsic symmetry breach, revealed itself so progressively important for very many modern scientific disciplines, and as already mentioned, was recognized by the western mathematics only in 1980! These formal geometric dynamics of the crystal endowed of symmetry breach were exactly called for this reason almost crystals! What relationship has, all of this, with your paintings? All my aesthetic experience, my paintings, of the last twenty years is completely based on the visual-formal concepts like those of crystals and almost-crystals vision, and on the concepts of a perceptive transparency and symmetry breach, starting from the studies related to the aesthetic philosophy. I wonder and I ask: couldn't this cultural visual convergence that today appears with my aesthetic experience among the visual rationalist European culture and the visual one, be a gigantic gift that today the Italian culture could make to the visual culture of the whole Islam? Appena lo elimina, tutta la tela crolla. Spesso, ciò che è essenziale (come, ad es. l aria ci fa respirare e vivere) non è neanche considerato. Così capita che si parla poco del cuore.. ma se venisse a mancare ciò che l universo tutto muove, allora la nostra povera umanità crolla distrutta. Il cuore che batte muove l universo e l universo muove il cuore. Questa è la relazione dello spirito umano con il mistero del mondo e della vita. THE HEART THAT MOVES THE UNIVERSE There is a term in the German language that in a word encloses a scientific, artistic philosophical and literary meaning so deep that is hard to translate it in other languages: the composed word Weltanschauung expresses a fundamental concept of pure abstraction that can be restrictively translated into the vision or conception of the world and things. It encloses a concept that extends the single one and reaches in the shared collective. In this interpersonal dimension, to me, the possibility to express with a single term amplex concept, summarize it in the HEART. A vision of the world that leaves from the heart transforms the life of the individuals; on the contrary, without to change the way to often see remains impossible to obtain a real solution to the personal psychological suffering. To have a vision of the world leaving from the heart it can be the best way in order to read the book of the things that are carried out around we. We intend the heart like a center of the feelings and symbol of love. The love is not a vague and voluble human feeling, but a concrete truth, a physical force that regulated the entire order of the nature. Apparently it seems difficult to explain that the heart is the motor of the universe. Pascal asserts that the heart has its reasons that the reason does not know. Dante in his amazing Divina Commedia concludes the Paradise with this last hendecasyllable: the amor that it moves the sun and other stars. If it is logical to accept the theory of Dante that places the love like motor of the universe, it is easy to imagine a universe in which the HEART it is encircled by other hearts satellites that live of light own and of light induced from vitality that pulsates from the central heart. We try, for absurdity, to remove the heart from our life. Sure we will understand the moral of the fable of the spider. It observes with satisfaction the work of its talent: a perfect canvas; neither the best architect would be able to create such geometric proportions and symmetries! It observes, the spider, is puffed up, but it sees to out of the canvas a vertical thread that surpasses its masterpiece. It is an only thread, block, outside place. As soon as it eliminates it, all the canvases collapses. Often, this that is essential (as, eg. the air makes us to breathe and to live) neither is not considered. So it happens that it is spoken little about the heart... but if it would come to lack this universe all moves, then our poor humanity collapses destroyed. The heart that it beats moves the universe and the universe moves the heart. This is the relation of the human spirit within the mystery of the world and the life. C è un termine nella lingua tedesca che in una parola racchiude un significato filosofico scientifico, artistico e letterario talmente profondo che difficile è tradurlo in altre lingue: la parola composta Weltanschauung esprime un concetto fondamentale di pura astrazione che può essere restrittivamente tradotto con "visione o concezione del mondo e delle cose". Racchiude un concetto che trascende il singolo e attinge nel collettivo condiviso. In questa dimensione sovrapersonale, per me, la possibilità di esprimere con un solo termine un concetto complesso, si compendia nel CUORE. Una visione del mondo che parte dal cuore trasforma la vita degli individui; al contrario, senza cambiare il modo di vedere spesso resta impossibile ottenere una reale soluzione alla personale sofferenza psicologica. Avere una visione del mondo partendo dal cuore può essere la migliore maniera per leggere il libro delle cose che si svolgono attorno a noi. Noi intendiamo il cuore come sede dei sentimenti e simbolo di amore. L amore non è un vago e volubile sentimento umano, ma una concreta realtà, una forza fisica che regola l intero ordine della natura. Apparentemente sembra difficile spiegare che il cuore è il motore dell universo. Pascal afferma che il cuore ha le sue ragioni che la ragione non conosce. Dante nella sua stupenda Divina Commedia conclude il Paradiso con quest ultimo endecasillabo: l amor che move il sole e le altre stelle. Se è logico accettare la teoria di Dante che pone l amore come motore dell universo, è facile immaginare un universo in cui il CUORE è circondato da altri cuori satelliti che vivono di luce propria e di luce indotta dalla vitalità che pulsa dal cuore centrale. Proviamo, per assurdo, a togliere il cuore dalla nostra vita. Sicuramente capiremo la morale della favola del ragno. Egli osserva con soddisfazione l opera del suo ingegno: una tela perfetta; neanche il miglior architetto sarebbe capace a creare tali proporzioni e simmetrie geometriche! Osserva, il ragno, s insuperbisce, ma vede al di fuori della tela un filo 32
