WHERE UDITIVO Schematic flow diagram of what and where streams in the auditory cortical system of primates. The ventral what -stream is shown in green, the dorsal where -stream, in red. PP, posterior parietal cortex; PB, parabelt cortex; MGd and MGv, dorsal and ventral parts of the MGN. Rauschecker & Tian, 2000. PNAS
WHERE UDITIVO (a) Stimuli were delivered from five different spatial locations: in the vertical headcentered meridian (0 ), at the right angles to the meridian plane on both sides (left - 90, right +90 ) and at 45 to the meridian plane (left -45, right +45). (b) fmri experimental paradigm: a large black bar represents an fmri volume acquisition, a small gray bar represents the delivery of a stimulus. The sequence is repeated 35 times for each stimulus type. The total number of trials is 105.
WHERE UDITIVO Results from the group analysis (p<0.05, corr.): activated areas during auditory stimulation in the three conditions: MIXED (a, b), RIGHT (c, d) and LEFT (e, f). In the MIXED condition Heschl s gyrus bilaterally and a more lateral region corresponding to the posterior aspect of the superior temporal gyrus in the right hemisphere were activated, and were larger than in the two other conditions. The lateral region was extended dorsally reaching the y = -49. Furthermore, only in this condition, there was activation in the supramarginal gyrus. During both the RIGHT and the LEFT conditions, bilateral auditory cortex (Heschl s gyrus) and the right more lateral region of the posterior superior temporal gyrus were involved (Right hemisphere is on the left).
WHERE UDITIVO Subject1. The four ECDs are superimposed on the individual structural MRI: (a) bilateral sources in the Heschl s gyrus; (b) one source in the more caudal region of the superior temporal gyrus; (c) one source in the supramarginal gyrus. (d). The three ECDs in the right hemisphere are shown on a sagittal view. The positions of the two ECDs in (b) and (c) were constrained in a cube with 4 mm side centered on the center of mass of the corresponding fmri activations. MEG has shown an early activation in Heschl s gyrus (139 ms after the auditory stimulus), a subsequent activation in the superior temporal gyrus (156 ms) and a late activation in the inferior parietal lobule and in the supramarginal gyrus (162 ms).
