1 BOSTON UNIVERSITY STUDY ABROAD PADUA COURSE COURSE LANGUAGE INSTRUCTOR INSTRUCTOR OFFICE HOURS SCHEDULE COURSE VALUE LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE PROGRAM COURSE DESCRIPTION CAS LI 306 ADVANCED ITALIAN PRACTICUM Italian Claudia Baldelli Wed p.m. Tue + thurs p.m. 4 CREDITS Italian and European Studies Program: Demonstrate increased proficiency in Italian language from elementary to low- intermediate level and from intermediate to advanced level. Demonstrate knowledge of Italian culture with respect to three of the following areas: history, politics, economics, religion, literature, film and the arts. Develop an awareness of cultural difference and an understanding of culture s role in shaping beliefs and practices. Develop new perspectives on one s own culture and an ability to think critic about one s own values and beliefs The course CAS LI 306 aims at developing and improving vocabulary, communicative functions and linguistic structures.. The students will also learn colloquialisms and idiomatic structures of the Italian language. It includes advanced grammar structures and a revision of the acquired ones through oral and written activities and assignments, both at home and in class. It includes a cultural project, a class visit and a seminar by a guest speaker. All out of class activities, trips and visits will be topics for oral presentations or written compositions. LEARNING STATEMENT TEACHING METHODOLOGY Homework is assigned and checked regularly and focuses on the functions and linguistic structures presented in class. Weekly the class-room based course consists of four 50 minutes contact hours and requires 8 student effort hours for successful completion of the course. The didactic approach is flexible and encourages the observation and the analysis on the language by activating linguistic knowledge on the part of the students. This implies a massive immersion in real language situations and materials, and strong exposure to different types of linguistic inputs. Reflections on the language are shared in class but guided and confirmed by the teacher so that the students themselves can discover language mechanisms. This effort guarantees a stronger and deeper acquisition of language structures and enables the students to use the language more authentically and naturally. The main goal is upgrading the comprehension ability and producing language in context adequately, according to the situation and language register, differentiating the written and oral production, not to mention the ability of interaction, which not only implies a good handling of language but the basic knowledge of Italian habits and social behavior.

2 COURSE MATERIALS BIBLIOGRAPHY Special attention is given to the interference of L1 in the language production: activities and exercises especially designed will be dedicated to control typical and recurring mistakes. The course is based on a copy-pack especially prepared by the teacher which includes texts written and oral - of different typologies, communicative functions, grammar structures, vocabulary and exercises. Specific readings on the cultural project of the semester will be in the copy-pack Notes taken in class are part of the course materials. Extra materials will be handed out or sent via when needed. As CEFR state, at this level students can understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialization. They can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. They can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. The course includes a cultural project Italian Culture Through Idioms and Proverbs with special readings, out of class activities and assignments around town, listening and watching online podcast and videos. Students must prepare an oral presentation about the project of the semester which will be graded as the final oral exam. In addition to homework, the students progress will be evaluated with:

3 GRADING CRITERIA 2 language texts to be done in class, 2 written composition to be done at home and sent via to the teacher not later that 6.00 p.m. of the due date. 2 oral presentations in class 1 mid-term exam, written and oral 1 final exam, written and oral. The final grade is: 1. Participation, attendance, homework 20% 2. Language Quiz 20% 3. Oral presentation 20 % 4. Written composition 20 % 5. Mid term + Final exam 20 % Participation: punctuality, active participation in class with observations, questions, discussions; carefulness and precision in homework; regular study at home according to the teacher instructions; improvement in the language ability as to the beginning of the course; Language tests: they are based on the topics analyzed in class and specified in the syllabus. Oral presentations: can be of several typologies, ranging from roleplays to short monologues. They can be integrated with power-points and pictures but cannot include written parts. In Oral presentations the teacher evaluates: vocabulary 25% (how rich, varied and appropriate); accuracy in the use of grammar structures 25%; sentence structure and cohesion 25% (linking of sentences and paragraph; coherence in meaning); fluency 10%; content 10%. Written compositions: have to be Garamond 12, double spacing, 200 words at least. They must be sent as an attachment to the teacher by 9.00 p.m. of the due date (baldelli@bu.edu). In the attachment students must write title, date, name. In written compositions the teacher evaluates: accuracy and precision of grammar structures 30%; accuracy and precision of vocabulary 30% (how rich, varied and appropriate); sentence structure and cohesion 30% (linking of sentences and paragraph; coherence in meaning); content 10%. Midterm and final exams: they are composed of a written and an oral part: Written part: linguistic test written comprehension or written production BU POLICY Oral part: dialogue with the teacher (interaction) or with peers + a monologue about the cultural project of the course Arrive on time: students won t be accepted if they arrive later that 10 minutes after the starting of the lesson; Mobiles must be turned off; Students are not allowed to take in class food or beverages except for water; Students must be respectful of mates and teachers. When in a foreign country, behavior and culture can be very different. No non-

4 excused absences are accepted, only for health reasons. Late homework or assignments are not accepted. Attendance Boston University Padua students are expected to attend each and every class session, tutorial, and field trips required for the class. Students should note that attendance will be taken into account by faculty when determining final grades. Plagiarism Simply stated, plagiarism is taking another s work and presenting it as you own. Dictionary definitions of plagiarism frequently include terms such as theft or steal. Plagiarism is, in fact, intellectual theft. It is one of the most serious forms of academic misconduct. Plagiarism committed by a student will certainly result in cou rse failure and may result in suspension or dismissal.
