1 Dear IS Modena families, It s been a hard week for our school with many students and teachers unable to attend due to a very aggressive stomach virus that s been hitting our area. The stomach virus is still around and quite aggressive, therefore please make sure your child(ren) have fully recovered before sending them back to school to avoid unwanted relapses. We also kindly remind you of the importance of informing the school in case your child(ren) have contracted any infectious disease or head lice, so that we can alert the other families and possibly prevent the infection from spreading. 2 Holocaust Memorial Day ISM Action MYP & DP Il giorno della Memoria Over the past few weeks Grade 9 have been working on developing short workshops for the remaining students in the MYP that focused on the fact that 27th January is Holocaust Memorial Day. Students divided themselves into groups and worked hard to produce factual and interesting presentations about the Holocaust during World War II. The remaining MYP students were therefore introduced to the Holocaust, so they understood what it was, as well as a presentation about Anne Frank's diary and why she wrote it. Another group focused on the concentration camps and how some people today still deny the Holocaust ever occurred and finally a quiz to see what had been understood. This is an important process for the students to take part in, not only developing their skills, but also as the younger generation, using History to learn from our mistakes to ensure something like this does not happen again. ************************************* Nelle scorse settimane Grade 9 ha lavorato allo sviluppo di un breve seminario per gli altri studenti di MYP dedicato al 27 gennaio, Giornata della Memoria dell'olocausto. Gli studenti si sono divisi in gruppi e hanno lavorato duramente per realizzare presentazioni interessanti, basate sui fatti a proposito dell'olocausto durante la II Guerra Mondiale. Gli altri studenti di MYP sono stati introdotti all'olocausto così che comprendessero cosa fosse, e al Diario di Anna Frank e le ragioni che l'hanno portata a scriverlo. Un'altro gruppo si è occupato dei campi di concentramento e come alcune persone ancora oggi neghino l'olocausto e infine è stato realizzato un quiz per capire cosa è stato compreso. Si tratta di un processo importante per gli studenti a cui prendere parte, non solo per sviluppare le loro abilità ma anche per far sì che le giovani generazioni possano imparare dalla Storia affinchè cose simili non possano più accadere. Ms. Travill - MYP Individuals & societies The Diploma Programme Students each brought in something to share with the group and talked about why they had chosen it. Items included a photograph of a pile of zyklon B canisters which highlighted the planned, systematic nature of the Nazi methods, a haunting image taken during a visit to Auschwitz, Pastor Niemoller's poem 'First they came..' and a photo of a memorial plaque from Birkenau which reminds us of the importance of remembrance with the line 'For ever let this place be a cry of despair and a warning to humanity'. **************************** Ogni studente del Diploma Programme ha portato qualcosa da condividere con il gruppo e hanno discusso le ragioni che li ha indotti a sceglierlo. Tra gli oggetti c'era una foto di una pila di barattoli di zyklon B a sottolineare la natura pianificata e sistematica dei metodi nazisti, un'immagine inquietante ripresa durante una visita ad Auschwitz, la poesia di Pastor Niemoller 'Prima vennero...' e una foto di una targa commemorativa di Birkenau che ci rammenta l'importanza della memoria con il verso 'Lasciate che questo luogo sia per sempre un grido di disperazione e un'avvertimento per l'umanità'. 4 Carnevale Celebrations! Carnevale Day will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 9 (Mardi Gras)- students are invited to come to school in costumes on that day. CARNEVALE CELEBRATIONS All Grades will enjoy a small celebration in their classrooms at the end of the day with typical Carnevale pastries (frappe) and fruit juices/drinks kindly organised by the PTA and class reps. *** Costumes must be school appropriate: fake weapons, overly gruesome and disturbing costumes are not allowed. *** Festeggiamenti di Carnevale! 5 ST VALENTINE S DAY CELEBRATIONS Non-uniform day on Friday, February 12th Dear Parents, Last year the Student Council started collaborating with CEFA, an organisation focusing on bringing education to rural areas and sponsoring schools and young students. Last year the school raised enough money for four scholarships and we would love to continue our collaboration with CEFA. Therefore, we have decided to also have a non-uniform day for St. Valentine s day on Friday 12 th of February, where each students may come dressed in pink, purple, white or red if they pay 2. The money will be collected by the class teachers in the morning. The same rules as always apply not too much skin showing and shorts and skirts must be at least mid-thigh. All of the money will go to bringing long-lasting effects on people s lives by paying for education. If the student does not want to come dressed up but still wants to donate money, they are free to donate and come in uniform. If the students want to donate more than 2, they are welcome to do so. If you are interested in learning more about CEFA s initiatives, feel free to visit their website: The ISM Student Council Cari Genitori, L anno scorso il consiglio studentesco ha collaborato con CEFA, una organizzazione specializzata nel portare l educazione in aree meno sviluppate, sponsorizzando scuole e giovani studenti. L anno scorso la nostra scuola ha raccolto abbastanza soldi per quattro borse di studio e quest anno vogliamo continuare la nostra collaborazione con CEFA. Dunque, abbiamo deciso di organizzare un giorno senza uniforme per San Valentino, Venerdì 12 Febbraio, dove ogni studente può venire a scuola vestito in rosso, rosa, viola oppure bianco pagando 2. I soldi verranno raccolti dagli insegnanti durante la mattina. Anche per questa giornata vigono le stesse normative per l abbigliamento, niente di troppo scollato e pantaloni oppure gonne devono arrivare almeno a metà coscia. Tutti i soldi raccolti verranno usati per aiutare il futuro delle vite degli studenti attraverso l educazione. 6 Dear Parents, For the past two years we have celebrated International Mother Language Day ( Last year was very successful and we felt it was a worthwhile experience for all of the students. The day falls on February 21st, which is a Sunday, therefore we will be celebrating it on Monday February 22nd. As we did last year, we will be organizing the students into mixed age social groups based on their mother tongue language. They will then spend the afternoon involved in cultural and relational learning activities organized by the group teacher such as games, reading together, singing songs and doing expressive arts. Some of our mother tongue language groups will be quite large and we have ample resources within the school. However for other languages we unfortunately don t have resources or adults who speak them within the staff and in a few cases we don t have other students who share the language. Last year we had a number of parents who came in to help out and we would like to invite parents to participate again, especially for our minority languages. This would mean coming into school for the afternoon, spending time with the students, talking, reading, singing, playing games in the students' mother tongue. You can also help out by sharing books and resources in those languages which the students can share. If you would like to help out during the afternoon of February 22nd please contact me by February 8th and we can discuss how you can best support us in this event. Kind regards, Jacky Payne PYP Coordinator International Mother Language Day Celebration 2016 MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22 Gentili Genitori, Negli ultimi due anni, qui alla IS Modena, abbiamo celebrato la Giornata Internazionale della Lingua Madre ( L edizione dell anno scorso ha avuto un grande successo e si è rivelata un esperienza di grande valore per tutti gli studenti. Quest anno la giornata cade di domenica, il 21 febbraio, quindi verrà celebrata lunedì 22 febbraio. Come l anno scorso, divideremo gli studenti in gruppi di varie età in base alla loro lingua madre. Trascorreranno il pomeriggio impegnati in attività culturali e di relazione organizzate dagli insegnanti come conversazione, letture di gruppo, canto e arti espressive. Alcuni gruppi di lingua madre sono piuttosto numerosi e abbiamo risorse sufficienti a scuola. Tuttavia, per altre lingue non abbiamo risorse o adulti tra lo staff che le parlino e in alcuni casi non abbiamo altri studenti con cui condividere la lingua. L anno scorso alcuni genitori sono venuti a darci una mano e vorremmo estendere l invito anche quest anno, in particolare alle minoranze linguistiche. Si tratterebbe di venire a scuola nel pomeriggio, trascorrendo del tempo con gli studenti, parlando, leggendo e cantando nella lingua madre degli studenti. Potete aiutare anche condividendo libri e risorse in quelle lingue che gli studenti possono capire. Se volete aiutarci nel pomeriggio del 22 febbraio, per favore contattatemi entro l 8 febbraio per discutere su come meglio contribuire a realizzare questo evento. We also advise you to make an appointment with the Admissions team to register your children as soon as possible and in any case ahead of the 20 March deadline, after which an additional late payment fee is due. Please remember that registration is not complete until you sign the new contract with our admissions team, so if you pay the fees by bank transfer you still need to make an appointment to meet with our admissions staff in person. Currently enrolled families are guaranteed places until 20 March, when we open admissions to new families. 8 Not only Mathematics unveiling Mr. Montorsi s artistic side After a long year of rehearsals, a choir composed of about 200 singers (which Mr. Montorsi and another 4 conductors have had the honour and duty to teach); an orchestra with 35 musicians, 3 solo singers and the conductor M Balázs Kocsár from the Faculty of Pécs in Hungary; and the famous Italian mezzosoprano Francesca Provvisionato, will perform the Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's masterpiece Requiem Mass in D minor K. 626 in 3 perfomances: Friday the 5th, St. Bartholomew's Church in Pavullo nel Frignano (MO) Saturday the 6th, Modena's Cathedral Sunday the 7th, New Church in San Felice sul Panaro (MO) All the performances start at 9 pm (and last about 90 min.), Entrance is free. Please discuss this with them. If your child arrives home with clothing or something else that belongs to another student, please return it to school the next day. A lost property (Lost & Found Box) is located temporarily in the Medical Room, feel free to check it for missing items and please keep it tidy. PARKING AREA All parents must use the public parking area outside the school gate at all times. Please remember to lock your cars and please make sure you don t leave any personal belongings in the car. Internal parking area is reserved for staff only and the bus service.
