Learning English as a world language, past, present and future; 2. Take a stand against bullying; 3. Ecologically thinking; Third, Fourth and Fifth Year: 4. Human Trafficking; 5. The Death Penalty; 6. Dissent. These topics have been chosen because socially and educationally relevant. They are issues debated in the media, some closely-related to the direct experience of the learners (e.g. learning English, bullying, etc.) and others directly linked to the final-year exam expectations (essay-writing in Italian, for example). These macro-areas also promote interdisciplinary approaches. All the texts/materials used during sessions and workshops (literary works, videos, newspaper/magazine articles, websites, songs, images, printed ads, commercials, social ads,
podcasts, comics, cartoons, graphic novels) will be chosen according to the age-range of the target students and adapted according to the different secondary-school strands. Literary and non-literary texts in a variety of genres and registers will be by authors from different English-speaking countries (the UK, Ireland, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, India). The trainer will adapt approaches and topics according to the trainees needs and requests. During sessions and workshops the trainer s teaching blog and webpage will be used: http://cristianaziraldo.altervista.org Sessions will particularly focus on the following language skills: Listening The Listening Process Listening for overall meaning Listening for specific information Devising pre-/while-/after-listening activities Using authentic materials and situations Speaking Promoting communicative efficacy Language input, structured output and communicative output to develop communicative efficacy Content-oriented and form-oriented input Presentation and interaction skills Public-speaking strategies Devising speaking activities aimed at a given project Reading Why should we read in the foreign language classroom? Reasons for reading: reading in different ways for different purposes. Reading for meaning Reading and the communication process: schema theory; active interrogation of the text; prediction; inference; discourse; coherence; cohesion; discourse markers Strategies to improve reading skills Jigsaw reading Reading activities: pre-reading; while-reading; after-reading Using questions on a text What makes reading a text easy or difficult? Realia in the classroom (exploiting songs; using magazines/newspapers) Promoting extensive reading in the classroom Writing Why teach writing? What kind of writing can we invite students to do? Ways of encouraging written practice Freewriting The pros and cons of letter writing (both for the teacher and the student) Blogging for ELT Creative writing Using diaries as a learning/teaching language experience Sessions aimed at the promotion of teaching literature will mainly focus on: What is literature? What is distinctive about the language of literature? The reader and the text Literary competence and the language classroom Why use literature in the language classroom?
Teaching literature in the EFL classroom: different approaches (pros and cons) The features of poetry, fiction and drama The theme-based approach (for and against) Teacher-centred vs student-centred literature classes Relating the literary text to the student s personal world Alternative ways to teaching literature: some examples Exploiting literary texts to boost cultural awareness and enhance students motivation to the study of the English language (i.e. tackling issues close to the learners interests, such us discrimination, falling in love, binge-drinking, etc.) Promoting the appreciation of literature through teen novels (the trainer will present trainees with novels aimed at teens not present in anthologies written for the teaching of literature in Italian secondary schools) Theme-based literary paths (e.g. dissent in literature, colonialism and post-colonialism, utopia and dystopia, etc.) Literature and film adaptation Promoting creative writing and reading for pleasure through literary texts (poetry, fiction, drama, auto-biography) Literature and Information and Communication Technologies Assessment 20% classroom involvement and participation during lessons and activities 30% keeping of a trainee log 50% lesson planning. Trainees will devise integrated-skill activities to motivate students to the study of a literary work (poem; short story; excerpt taken from a novel, a play or an autobiography) and promote language learning. The trainees will choose their own theme among the macro areas dealt with during the workshops and sessions. Ideally trainees will work in groups of twos or threes.
